Game Thread: 2/10 IU @ NW 5:30 pm BTN
Honkyman replied to mamasa's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Whatever one thinks of Verdell Jones, he will forever be a key player in one of the most dramatic winning moments in IU history. Even without that I think he was better than Phinisee. But Rob still has time to redeem himself. -

It was a good move by Archie to use the fouls the team had under the 7 before Northwestern would go 1-and-1 in order to cut almost in half the final 7 seconds of the game. That is standard but it was good he knew to do it. The thing about Archie is he is by the book. But he is not creative, not innovative, which is why the offense is so predictable and sluggish. -
OK. Uspshoosier. You've made your point. Painter is a better coach than Archie. Archie lost to Northwestern by 7 points instead of just 3.

Better coaches struggle against Northwestern? Is that why Northwestern hasn't won a game in 2021? Most of their losses have been by double digits. I credit Armaan and Al for a gutty late game performance and for hitting free throws. In fact, I have been a consistent supporter of Al's when others have trashed him. I credit Jerome with some great clutch shots after missing a couple of games. But to think that IU's win over Northwestern was anything but lucky is delusional. But we've been unlucky in several losses this season so it is good to see some luck shining our way for once. And, I hope to keep IUc2016 entertained.

IU did not beat Northwestern because Archie out-coached Collins. Poor IU coaching was particularly on display during the first 5 minutes when IU failed to score. This is a chronic problem. Once again Archie failed to get the team ready to play from the start. But there were other examples of poor coaching on Archie's part. Whenever TJD was double teamed, he needed to get the ball to the open man. But repeatedly he held on to the ball or passed it to another player who was not open. Making sure a shooter is open to receive a pass from a double-teamed TJD and having TJD pass to that player is a chronic problem with IU this year. IU was very fortunate to win Wednesday and it happened mostly because Northwestern put IU's best free-throw shooters on the line when it counted. That and an off-balanced shot by Durham that got us into overtime and another lucky shot by Durham that got us into the second overtime.

Has there ever been a worse shooting IU team in the modern era (since 1960)? The shooting, especially the free throw shooting, is dreadful. -
(2022) - SG C. J. Gunn to DePaul
Honkyman replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Gunn looks to be a good college player over time. But successful college teams are built with both solid 4-year players and instant impact players. The player who is carrying the current team is not a 4-year player. IU could use another one like him at guard. -
Game Thread: Iowa at IU 2/7/21 Noon FOX
Honkyman replied to LIHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Nice that somebody made finally made a play at the end. Good to get the win despite terrible play for most of the game. Free throws almost cost IU the victory. -
If the fundamentals under Archie are better, they haven't translated into real success yet. By year four, Crean's team reached the Sweet Sixteen. With Archie's teams, improvement is painfully slow. Hoosier fans are losing patience. Besides, the fundamentals don't seem improved when watching games like IU v. Purdue.

Treesh said: "Some of my biggest issues with CTC's teams and his coaching included the defense, the lack of TO's, the offense starting with 7 seconds left on the shot clock, the lack of in-game adjustments, the lack of progress the overall team experienced in a given season." You could be describing Archie Miller's teams as well. Defense? Like the defense we put up against Purdue and Rutgers? The lack of progress in a given season. And on and on. These complaints sound like a description of the past four years under Archie.

IU stinks. Their coach stinks more. -

Nice defense. Rutgers is shooting 60% from the field to IU's 44%. That's the game right there. -
Happy for the great win at Iowa. I hope IU is turning the corner. However, one game is not the measure of a successful season. After similarly defeating Iowa last year, IU was blown out by Michigan in the very next game. Hoping for the best the rest of the season. But based on the pattern over Archie's tenure, one can't help but fear the worst.

Calipari and Pearl wouldn't come to IU anyway. Same with other top coaches without a questionable history with the NCAA. The basketball program is a mess.
-
IU fans like Trey Galloway because of his hustle. If Trey developed a reliable shot, he could be something truly special.

I have no loyalty to former IU players as possible IU coaches. But Steve Alford is a much superior coach than Archie Miller. Archie is 20-25 years behind the times. Alford may not be the ideal coach for IU but he at least understands how to coach contemporary basketball. Frankly, imo, Archie is the worst IU coach since Lou Watson (who was fired before IU hired Bobby Knight). He is a terrible game coach and has locked his players into a rigid offensive scheme that has little chance of succeeding. BTW, I have watched or attending nearly every IU basketball game since the Lou Watson era.

James Blackmon Jr - KSK Basket (Turkey)
Honkyman replied to Dalton26's topic in Hoosiers in the Pros
After the hatred toward him, I'm not at all surprised he left. _______ Yes. Why do IU fans direct such negativity and animus toward some of the IU players? Christian Watford was a frequent target until he hit the shot against Kentucky. Not all of the targets can be lucky enough to hit a buzzer beater against a rival (although JBJ hit one against Penn State). These players are doing their best. I don't remember these kind of attacks against Knight's players. It must be a product of the times. Very weird. -
The question with Galloway moving forward is does he become a shooter? Right now his inability to hit open 3-point shots is limiting the team's offense.

Too bad JBJ didn't stay another year at IU. -
Archie is out-coached by Matt Painter once again.

Crean brought in Cody Zeller who was a much better college player than Romeo Langford and Yogi Ferrell who also was an excellent player. He brought in Thomas Bryant, James Blackmon Jr. and Juwan Morgan. I am no fan of Tom Crean. But while he brought in a few players that didn't amount to much, he also recruited some great players who went on to play in the NBA. -
