Race will be back.

If Galloway is starting and hasn't developed a reliable 3-point shot, IU will not likely be as good next season as they were this past season. I would hope Tamar Bates makes a leap and plays to his potential. And, I hope Leal who is a better shooter than Galloway is ready for more playing time. I agree that Geronimo is obviously not starting at the 5.

Furthermore, I hate to say it, but IU basketball does not have a good reputation nationally. The really good players--the kind who would know they are better than anyone currently on the IU squad--aren't interested in IU unless they already have a relationship with one of the coaches.
-
A really good guard isn't transferring to IU in 2022. To think otherwise, is pure fantasy. Woodson can sell IU to a good shooting forward or a center, if TJD leaves. He can't sell IU to a good guard if Xavier Johnson is returning. It won't happen.

go iu bb said: "We hear this argument every offseason about how we can't bring in good players because they'd be scared off by the ones we have even though the ones we have are mediocre as evidenced by the fact that guard play is the team's Achilles heal." Why would a player transfer to a school where there are several players who play the same position when they could transfer to a school that doesn't have any or has very little competition? You can characterize a 5-Star recruit as mediocre but most players who are transferring will understandably believe that a 5-Star recruit is likely to get considerable playing time.

My prediction: Michael Durr, Kristian Lander and Parker Stewart will move on. Race Thompson will stay another year. TRJ will go to the NBA Combine but not hire an agent. It wouldn't be out-of-the-question that he stays one more year. Not sure about Miller Kopp or Logan Duncomb. IU may get one transfer out of the portal but it would need to be a big if TJD leaves. If Xavier Johnson and Rob Phinisee stay, along with Tamar Bates, Trey Galloway, Anthony Leal and incoming 5-Star Jalen Hood-Schifino and CJ Gunn, IU isn't very enticing for another guard unless he is a great 3-point shooter.

Road Rage said: "Pulling for Memphis over the Zags...just don't care for 'em!" Yea, I'm a big fan of Penny Hardaway's coaching and recruiting styles, too. Hardway has displayed so much more class at Memphis than Gonzaga's Mark Few.

Durham? Maybe. Too often he was a liability in the clutch. Parker Stewart shot 39% from 3-point range this year but never seemed like much of an asset. Improvement implies more than just statistics. So a player's numbers improved. The better question is did that player significantly improve the team's play.

No one during the Archie Miller era that stands out. OG Abunoby made a big jump from the time he landed at IU until the time he left.

The offense could be more open and fluid next season with Trayce Jackson Davis moving on. We could see something more like a three guard offense (Xavier Johnson if he stays, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and Tamar Bates) with Jordon Geronimo at the forward. Woodson will need to find a suitable replacement for TJD. The defense will suffer, however, since TJD turned into a strong rim protector this past season.

Rate The 2021-2022 Season! Staff + Players
Honkyman replied to Trish's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
There are some unduly harsh evaluations on this board. The main goals were to win 20 or more games, beat Purdue, compete at a higher level in conference play, and make the NCAA Tournament. IU achieved 3 of 4 of the main goals. Woodson turned IU into a top 20 defensive team which nobody believed possible going into the season. Unfortunately, the offense was anemic due primarily to inability to make open shots. That's on the players. Unlike Archie Miller's offensive scheme, Woodson's offense at least showed some ball movement and put players in a position to score. Turning a program around takes time. Hopefully, Woodson can bring in players soon who can both make shots and continue the success on defense. Woodson also seems to be developing a better culture as evidenced by his willingness to suspend players for curfew violations even at the cost of losing a game. Next season could be more challenging unless Woodson finds this spring a credible post player and at least one reliable shooter. -

Without a legitimate post presence, IU will have a tough time competing even at this season's level next year. Fans will need to be patient and Woodson's recruiting needs to get even better than it has been so far. -

Great college shooters were usually great high school shooters. The great shooters have a natural talent for shooting and develop that talent through hard work that begins before they are arrive at college. Coaching at the college level can develop shooting, however. Victor Oladipo was strictly a dunker in high school and became a good shooter at IU. -

IU needs reliable shooters by next season plus front court players to replace TJD and Race Thompson assuming they move on as is expected. Next year could be a lot worse than this year's frustratingly up and down season. -
IU vs St Mary’s - Thursday: NCAA Round of 64- 7:20 pm ET on TBS

What an embarrassment. IU is playing like they have no business even being in the NCAA tournament. Sad. -
If Parker Stewart's man has 10 turnovers it should be a good night for the Hoosiers.

Why is Geronimo shooting 3s?" Ridiculous. -

Galloway should never shoot a 3. He's terrible from long range. -

This team can't get a lead and hold it because these players relax whenever they get a lead. -

Galloway has no busy shooting 3s. -
Miller Kopp will probably return. Doubtful any other school as prominent as IU would be interested. Woodson seems to like him. I think Kopp will want another year to show that he's a better shooter than he showed this season. Xavier Johnson will return. He's just starting to take off as a player. He could be really good with one more year. I'm not sure why Race would return. Six years at the same school? Maybe if he thinks his role would be enhanced. But the team is not likely to be as good next year as this season. Why not go to Europe and make some money? Kristian Lander seems to be the odd guy out at point guard if Xavier and Rob Phinisee remain. Too bad. He wasn't ready his first year and apparently not this year either. In a couple of years, though, he could have a prominent role but unlikely he will wait to find out. TJD never learned how to shoot. But he doesn't seem to want to wait another year to try to develop in college.

Bruce Weber? Another former Big 10 coach flames out.

I see he was named 1st team Big 12 All Conference so why would he leave KSU? Making All Conference does make me wonder why IU never recruited him.
