  1. Go ahead and rationalize.
  2. Only someone who is more concerned about IU's athletic performance than their academic reputation would say this.
  3. I don't care about Michigan; I care about IU and I care about IU's academic reputation as well as their athletic record. Coach Woodson is a man of principal. I have no doubt if he is still interested in Love--and he may not be after his initial interaction with him--that Woodson will do the right thing and not cut corners to allow him to play. But if he is not interested or backs away, he won't announce why.
  4. I spoke to someone at Michigan who said the transcript did not stand up to scrutiny.
  5. I suspect the transcript looked passable on its face. Once they realized that some of his credits were from UNC bogus classes, they changed their minds.
  6. I wouldn't refer to insistence on meeting academic standards as a flaw of the university.
  7. Isn't UNC the school where basketball and football players were given credit for doing nothing? Is it any surprise that a UNC basketball player's transcript might be suspect and not all credits transferable?
  8. Lou Watson was in his second season as the head coach when the IU basketball team won the Big Ten in 1967 (tied with Michigan State). IU lost to Virginia Tech in the NCAA Tournament Regional semifinals but beat the number 8 nationally ranked Tennessee. There have been 8 IU basketball coaches since the NCAA tournament began in 1939. Archie Miller is the only IU coach not to lead a team to a NCAA tournament, though there seems to be consensus that IU would have been invited in 2020 if not for the COVID pandemic.
  9. Of course, it is true. I keep hearing about how IU is a top academic university, yet we would be willing to accept an athlete who is academically ineligible of enrolling at the University of Michigan. As a proud IU graduate and rabid IU basketball fan, I think we should and can do better. Maybe Love should go to summer school and improve his academic standing before deciding which school he is going to play for next season.
  10. It is not a good look for IU to be accepting transfer athletes that have been rejected by another conference school because of insufficient course credits.
  11. Some news outlets are reporting the reason why Love de-committed from Michigan is that he lacked the credits to transfer. If true, how does he transfer to Indiana (or anywhere else but a junior college)?

    Who fills the last scholarship?

Gabe Cupps is already an IU fan favorite. IU fans like Cupps because he has a great attitude, clearly loves IU, and seems to have very good point guard skills. But to put him in the same category as Isiah Thomas is simply ridiculous. Isiah was one of the top 2 or 3 players in the country coming out of high school. He is one of the greatest point guards of all time--college and NBA. A better comparison is Rob Phinisee. Cupps is ranked about the same as Phinisee was. IU fans were convinced that Phinisee was the next Yogi Farrell. And, maybe if not for injuries things might have turned out better for him. But he was never going to be in the same category as Yogi (who was a McDonalds All American). Cupps is a fine player who will see considerable playing time and hopefully provide some great moments (as Phinisee did, e.g., buzzer beater against Butler and beating Purdue almost single handedly) during his college career. But he is not at the talent level of Yogi Farrell much less Isiah Thomas.

    Who fills the last scholarship?

Ray Dennis the MAC player of the year who some have projected to land with Illinois just took a visit to Michigan. So Illinois isn't a lock. after all. Maybe IU can find a way to bring Dennis to Bloomington?

    That's Stan Pat.

So you wouldn't be interested in a Nick Zeisloft type of player, i.e., someone who shoots 3-point shots better than anyone on the team, to come off the bench and jump start the offense with multiple 3s?

    Who fills the last scholarship?

Gunn didn't play that much against the best schools on IU's schedule. His minutes were primarily in the pre-conference against lesser teams. In any event, he has to become a much more reliable long range shooter against good teams than he demonstrated last season or he won't play meaningful minutes during the conference schedule. Speculating how he might have performed against lesser competition is irrelevant.

    Who fills the last scholarship?

Gunn only plays meaningful minutes if he improves his perimeter shooting. Newton may wind up being a more reliable shooter.
  18. Oladipo was not a highly skilled player when he arrived at IU. In high school, virtually all of his points came from dunks. But he was athletic and over time became highly skilled.

    Who fills the last scholarship?

Gunn only shot 8% from three point range this past season. He is going to have to figure out how to be a reliable perimeter shooter before he will see the floor during meaningful moments. Some fans are high on him because he is athletic and energetic. Woodson gave him plenty of opportunity early on but he couldn't afford to play him later in the season.

    Who fills the last scholarship?

Bates was inconsistent. He had a couple of really good games. He shot over 40% from 3-point range until the post-season and ended up shooting 37.4%--good enough for 3rd on the team. For many players, consistency comes with experience. If he had stayed another year, he likely would have been ready to play with consistency. Expectations can work against a player's development.

Ron Holland is a 6'8" power forward. IU is loaded in the front court. Need a deadeye shooter from 3-point range.
  22. Louisville is the final visit which is usually an advantage. The assistant coach who recruited him at Duke is now at Louisville. Louisville could be the leader.

I agree Banks is a great kid. That is not relevant to the question of whether he is ready to start. Apparently the coaches do not believe he is ready to start or they wouldn't be trying to land a player to start ahead of Banks.

Indiana Players Now In The Portal

Geronimo fits in well with Kevin Willard's playing style. He will play quite a bit, if not start.
