Coach Woodson likes Miller Kopp in the starting lineup. That's the end of the discussion, at least for now. As mentioned, having Bates come off the bench to spell Xavier Johnson or Jalen Hill-Schifino makes good sense and such a role will provide Bates with near starter time. Also as mentioned above, Trey Galloway--when he gets into true playing shape--will likely end up playing quite a bit of time at the 3 (hopefully with improved perimeter shooting). There could be changes if the team underperforms with the current projected starting lineup, ie TJD, Race Thompson, Miller Kopp, X Johnson, and JH-S. We'll see.

If Bates is the most improved player, as has been stated by the coach and some players, he will definitely see a lot of time on the court. Geronimo has already proven he can score and rebound. Woodson seems to have a lot of confidence in Miller Kopp which is why he is slated as a starter. One has to assume he has been told he needs to shoot more and do more to get open shots. He started out last season well (28 points in one game). Hopefully that is the player we will see this season.
-
Galloway although he will play if his perimeter shooting has improved. It is not likely Galloway will play ahead of Bates, Geronimo or Reneau. Bates is apparently the most improved player on the team and Galloway spent the summer recovering from surgery. Geronimo and Reneau will play in front court. Obviously if someone gets hurt or production on the court is poor, Galloway could see more time.

Coach Woodson has Kopp playing with the starters so as a starter he's not likely to be an odd guy out. Malik is likely number 8 after Jordan Geronimo and Tamar Bates. Everything could change as the season goes along due to play on the court or injuries.
-
Woodson has added the disclaimer "if I could" in this statement, which means he doesn't think he can or should play 10 guys. What he is saying (imo) is that there are 10 players who are showing him in practice they deserve to play and be in the rotation but that he probably can't play all 10 of them in most games. Against the top teams he'll probably be playing no more than 8 guys.

John Laskowski. He was a total team player who averaged double digits coming off the bench. And at 6'6'' he was versatile.
-
That must be why their teams never lost.

There was quite a bit of fan criticism of Watford his first couple of seasons at IU. That criticism evaporated after he hit the shot that beat number one Kentucky.

Except Jay Edwards led his high school team to multiple state championships and was a high school Parade and USA All American.

9/24 Game Thread: IU at Cincy @ 3:30 pm ET on ESPN2

The play calling for this team is atrocious. So predictable. -
Alford's average was 5.9 points per game from 3-point range during the 1986-87 season--meaning he averaged two 3-point shots a game. Coach Knight hated the 3-point shot and preferred that they not shoot from 3-point range.
-
Actually, Alford shot most of his shots inside what would have been the 3-point line during his first three seasons at IU when there was no 3-point shot. Alford's 3-point shooting percentage in 1986-87, the only season the 3-point rule existed during his college career, was 53%.

Galloway's inability to hit perimeter shots means he will come off the bench and play behind Tamar Bates and Jalen Hood-Schifino. He needs a shot doctor as his shooting form is pretty bad (unusual for a coach's son). Also, because he lacks a reliable outside shot, his offense is predictable making him easier to guard than the other two. But he is a hustle player who has a knack for getting steals and loose balls. He will definitely see the floor based on his defense and hustle but his playing time could be reduced from last season with the addition of Hood-Schifino and the apparent improvement of Bates (as reported over the summer).

Scott May was 6'7''. Mike Woodson was 6'5''.

(2023) - PF Arrinten Page to USC
Honkyman replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Yes. It was a joke and exactly as you say-- because Maryland beat us on two players who visited IU the same week as Page. As far as I know, Page is not considering Maryland. -

Page is going for a visit at Maryland first. -
That's not what I said. This started with a prediction that Reneau would be as good as TJD was a freshman. I pointed out that TJD averaged over 13 points and 8 rebounds a game and was all-conference 3rd team as a freshman. Reneau won't come close to matching those numbers nor will he make an all-conference team. Those are qualitative measurements. What is "one of the best players on the team" mean? The best players tend to be those who start games, those who log the most playing time, and those who are on the floor at the end of close games. I predict barring injuries Reneau will not start and, in general, will not be on the floor at the end of close games. I have no doubt he will contribute when he is on the floor in a back-up role. Perhaps, he will fall into a "super sub" category as someone who contributes as much as starters do. That would be great if that is the case.

The hunger to watch IU basketball live far outweighs any risk that Hoosier Hysteria is marginalized by an NIL event in the summer. If you hold it, they will come.
-
OK. That's your prediction. My prediction is that Reneau will be an effective back-up to TJD and Race Thompson. He might struggle against the North Carolina and Kansas teams that are early in the schedule, but will improve steadily throughout the season. You have your prediction and I have mine. Only time will tell which one is the more accurate.
-
I agree Reneau will play and will show signs of being very good. But he won't be as good as TJD was as a freshman. TJD was the best player on that IU team as a freshman. If he is that good he would start. And, he is not starting ahead of TJD or Race Thompson.
-
Trayce Jackson Davis averaged 13.6 points and 8.1 rebounds a game as a freshman. TDJ was on the all-freshman conference team and 3rd team Big Ten overall his first year. It's highly unlikely that Reneau plays at that level this coming season. Unless he starts--which only happens if TJD or Race Thompson are hurt--he can't get anywhere near TJD's freshman numbers. As for Geronimo, he demonstrated near the end of the season he can score. Reneau is talented, no doubt, but he will be coming off the bench.

Simon Skodjt was added to the name Assembly Hall not to honor the Simon Skodjt family but because the family paid for the renovation. It was a financial transaction--money in exchange for name.
-
This is probably pretty accurate. I'm not sure JHS starts since he is also X's back-up but I'm sure he'll see time at both point and shooting guard which will add up to considerable time. I agree Kopp will be in the top 6 or 7. He's the best 3-point shooter on a team that doesn't shoot well from the perimeter. Geronimo showed late last season that he can score. He'll see time at the 3 if his 3-point shooting has improved. I don't see Galloway being higher than 9 unless his outside shot has improved considerably.
-
Geronimo will be in the top 8 for minutes played per game.

There were some that made that argument. I wasn't one of them.
