Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach
HoosierMatty replied to iubb's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Maybe is or maybe he isn't. But I think DeVries regardless is very good coach. I think Drock also brings other elements that make him a better fit than McCollum. I am 100 percent behind the hire. I was for McCollum before I knew anything about DeVries. I think Dolson made a smart well reasoned decision. For once this feels like a well thought out hire instead of all the stupid ones we made before it. -
Darian DeVries - New IUBB Head Coach

McCollum may be a better X's and O's coach than DeVries but he's still a very solid coach. And winning at a higher level program like Indiana there are other aspects such as recruiting the right level of talent. And the style of play can affect the level of recruits you get. I was definitely for McCollum but I had legitimate concerns about that. I feel comfortable at this point that DeVries may be a better fit. But time will tell -

So what is the word? We have a new coach already and it will be announced immediately after Woodson is gone? Who that is is open to speculation? -

People keep saying IU doesn't need to take a risk when hiring a candidate like McCollum. But whose to say IU has any choice in the matter. If all the top candidates tell us to kick rocks and other tier is candidates that have radioactive baggage or a candidate with mediocre results like Collins and Brownell, well eventually you are left with the up and comer tier. To be honest we shouldn't be surprised. Look what happened to U of L and UK. Hopefully we have similar results with whoever we pick. -

I think IU needs a brilliant tactician. Someone with a solid system and philosophy They don't have to be a Calipari bull **** artist to get recruits in today's game with NIL and revenue share. And honestly whoever is the coach we need to hire a GM to help with the portal. I would say anyone who takes the job and puts in the hard work immediately has an edge instate recruiting. The other aspect is personality and engagement with fans that's expected at a place like IU. I think as long as they can do that they don't have to be a big name or win the press conference. Which why if we strike out on the top names, and Beard isn't touchable,a McCollum hire might make a lot of sense. Yes it's a big risk but it can have a ton of upside. -

At this point if we can't get a big name I would rather take McCollum rather than hire someone like Brownell. -

I think a lot of the Beard talk is his agents pushing hard, former players that want him and some donors. Does that mean he is given more consideration that previously thought? Possibly, but I still have a hard time thinking we pick him. I don't see the President signing off on him. And while some donors want him I doubt the heavy hitters like the Cook family will be ok with it. -

At this point I'm so tired of losing I say let's hire the drunk. Keep him on a short lease and make him attend AA. -

Wouldn't getting into a physical altercation with your assistant be grounds for being fired? He can complain all he wants, but the truth is we have given him special treatment all around because he was a former player. The very fact he even got this job was because of it. Certainly not his resume. This was always my concern with hiring a former player, if it doesn't work out it's hard to separate. But I would have never imagined a former player being so clueless about this job and what it entails and be so selfish on top of it. -

This make me feel much better and it's what I believe at this point. He's got someone already. Who that is I'm not fully confident. My theory is we probably reached out to other people like Dusty to see their interest. But whomever we have secured is the only one we actually offered the job to. I think Dusty was already inclined not to take it to begin with. One because he's happy at Michigan and didn't want to turn his back on school that wanted him when Indiana didn't. But also he probably knew he was a plan B and didn't like that. That's speculation on my part. But without those dynamics I think he wouldn't have signed a extension so soon. -

Do they currently indicate that we have a commitment from said candidate even though they won't name them? -

Just to add to the Bennett thing. Even though a candidate like him or Stevens has the ability to talk directly to our AD I can't image it would ever happen on our campus. They would meet somewhere far away. -

What about this guy? I think we can get him real cheap too. Just throw in a few extra incentives. Like make it to the tournament get free case of Busch Light. Might need to get him personal chauffeur, but I think he could Win big. -

Why are we conditioning ourselves to this idea the Mick Cronin will be the next coach? I seriously doubt he is high on any internal list by the AD. This is just talking heads pushing this. The same people who like to crap IU and gas light our fans. I'm sorry if Cronin gets hired I will seriously be pissed. -

Cronin and Buzz Williams are top of the WTF hires to me. They will win enough not to get fired but not take us where we want to be. Those hires are for schools that want to win some in Basketball but not really compete for anything. If you can't get Stevens, May, or we aren't touching Beard, I would rather go for an up and comer like McCollum. At least there may be a higher ceiling. -

I'm just going to keep telling myself we are going to pick the WTF hire so I'm not setting myself up for disappointment. This has what IU has conditioned me to feel. -

So are we actually going to hear anything today officially from the school? Doesn't Woodson have a pre game media interview today for tomorrows game? No way he's not asked about the status of his job. -

Doesn't Woodson have a media interview today because of tomorrows game? If Indiana doesn't release something before hand then Woodson will definitely be asked about it. Or is the intention to announce it during the interview? This seems all a little messy. Especially if Woodson is being difficult about this. I don't think Indiana would want him behind a mic. -

My only expectation is Dolson hires someone who knows how to coach. And that it will be his decision. Big name or not it doesn't matter. That's all I can hope or expect. If it's Steven's I will be elated. But I don't want to set my self up to be disappointed. -

I am curious has Indiana or would Indiana ever approach Painter. I get we have a less than one percent chance of him saying yes. But I would be curious if he told us to kick rocks immediately or at least listen.
