(2018) PG Darius Garland to Vandy
Maedhros replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Darius himself retweeted Rabjohns just a few minutes ago. But he tweeted the now outdated article with his original announcement time! Oh no, what does it mean?! -

Because he met those guys on his visit and made some friends. The simplest explanation is usually the best. -

Because after you announce your commitment, you want to talk about it. Think of all the Q&As that get posted at ITH and Peegs right after. With Darius, all the Indiana media will be in New Jersey and completely occupied for the next several hours covering a game taking place. To say nothing of the coach to whom Darius would be committing. Maybe this really was the best time available for the Garlands. But it sure seems like if he was going to commit to Indiana, a more convenient time slot could have been chosen. -

Kris Wilkes committed to UCLA with a press conference at his Indianapolis high school. -

Given that the two recruits are surely talking to each other, it' be awfully swell to learn the Garlands threw Romeo Langford up on the board as a pro for Indiana, as well. -

That was my memory as well. The more interesting part of Jerry's tweet is that he's seen Slater's pick, but hasn't (yet) changed his own. Jerry can call the pick "significant" to drive traffic to 247, but it's apparently not significant enough for him to take action. Obviously that can still change. But at the moment Jerry still trusts whomever he was hearing from last week more than he trusts Andrew Slater. Sounds good to me. -

From 2002, do you remember beating Kent State to get to the Final Four, or do you remember beating Duke to get to the Elite Eight? -

This is what I sound like when I get an estimate I don't like from a contractor and decide I'll be going with someone else. -

Matt Scott, the Kansas writer who picked Romeo to Kansas shortly after Jerry Meyer did, had now changed his pick to "foggy". Scott is the guy Jerry told someone on Twitter to follow for news on Romeo's visit. This would seem to support the idea Romeo has cooled on Kansas. -

It won't work everywhere. Schools are not allowed to announce recruits, or put their face up on the big screen. The genius of what Archie did is he trusted the Indiana fans to know exactly who it was walking in front of them, and the Indiana fans came through. In a big way. That wouldn't have happened even at North Carolina, when Romeo's father said in interviews afterward that the fans didn't really know who his son was. There aren't many places as passionate as Assembly Hall. -

The changed pick doesn't mean anything tangible. It's just one analyst's best guess as to where he thinks a recruit will land. That it's Jerry Meyer feels significant because he runs the 247 site, and the Crystal Ball is his baby, but also because there's a perception he doesn't pick in favor of Indiana. One example is the fact Jerry was just one of three picks in favor of Kansas before today. But there's no reason he can't change again before Romeo announces, or won't do so after Romeo takes his visit to Kansas this weekend. If the plan remains to sign in the spring, there's still a long way for this to go. -

Guys. Jerry Meyer just now flipped his Crystal Ball pick from Kansas to Indiana. -

Between Grimes and Herro, Kansas isn't exactly making Romeo a priority this week. -

Unless Romeo does cancel the Kansas visit. At which point, I'm sure Jerry will switch to North Carolina. -

So Gregg Doyel, sportswriter generalist who occasionally casts his attention on college basketball, has better sources than Jeff Rabjohns, Alex Bozich, Jeff Borzello, Jerry Meyer, and the seven other recruiting writers who picked Indiana for Romeo in the Crystal Ball this past week alone? Color me doubtful. -

Assuming this means he wants to see talent joining him, that suggest the recruitment of Darius Garland is extremely important. We have a nice class, but Kansas has two top 40 guys already and is in on several other five-stars. They seem to be the favorite for Quentin Grimes, let's land a five-star PG of our own. -

He's a Louisville writer that jumped on last night to quickly reassign three players who each dropped Louisville this past week: Romeo, Anfernee Simons and Courtney Ramey. I assume he's familiar enough with each recruitment to know which schools were also heavily involved, but I see his picks as removing Louisville more so than adding Indiana, Florida or Missouri. -
Now THAT would be fun timing, with Langford visiting UCLA this weekend. Edit: unless it includes Schilling. Didn't think of that at first...

FWIW, Bill Self made an in-home visit to the Langfords on Monday, and that's when the official visit was scheduled. The FBI news didn't break until Tuesday morning. -

In terms of this specific recruitment, that likely means proving yourself as a reliable pipeline to the NBA lottery. Kansas has a proven record in this regard, something our new administration will need to establish. -

I'll push back on this. When Meyer picked against Indiana for Wilkes, he switched his pick to Michigan. Beilein is considered by everyone to be clean, as much if not more than Crean. There's no reason to think Meyer avoided Crean because he knew he wouldn't play ball, only to pick Beilein instead. -

My favorite Crystal Ball right now is the one for Matthew Hurt. The Minnesota writer picked Minnesota. Jerry picked Louisville, another Cardinals pick he'll have to change, as Hurt has already cancelled a scheduled visit. This same Kansas writer again picked Kansas. And the most recent pick is from a Duke writer picking Duke. None of these guys know shirt. -

Funny thing is, now that Jerry's switched his pick, I suspect the next several picks we see will also be for Kansas. The herd mentality is strong on Jerry's site, and he just gave the signal.
