Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers
bigrod replied to Brass Cannon's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It is interesting that he is still going after players with the over-signed situation. But, we are speculating and he has actually talked to all the players. It's quite possible that he knows of some departures and has told them they are welcome to participate in workouts and team activities until they are actually done with school. -

Here is the quote from Hulls: I have never seen Coach shoot a jump shot. Ever. He would always demonstrate drills and such but he never actually fired it up there. Maybe he did it so we could just get on with the drill because he was always super efficient with practices and what we had to get done…But 4 years and never see him shoot a jumper? Pretty interesting, haha. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app -

Any player who is an awesome shooter or scorer but doesn't care enough about his team to at least make an effort to play defense, is hurting the team. If watching the games and it's affect on the team and other players isn't enough evidence, our record over the last two years surely is. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app -
I really want to have some decent memories about the guy, but the more of these interviews I hear, the less respect I have for him. How about moving on with some dignity!? It's becoming apparent why he couldn't put any kind of a consistent product out there. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

Based on his record, it seems he wanted a restart roughly every 2-3 years. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

More media manipulation. He over recruited every year and he didn't know players were leaving? Something doesn't make sense. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

Who knows if this is true or just another excuse. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

He seemed to be way more interested in spinning that everything was great than actually making it great. He did a great job of playing the media, which is a big reason they supported him to the very end. It's amazing how many of those guys started saying what they really thought after he was fired. His legacy is excuses. There's always a reason that he wasn't as good as he should have been. He was way more interested in winning the press conference than leading and teaching. Someone is out. Period. If all the current players stay, we don't have a scholly available. The joys of oversigning... -

Oh, to the Crean apologists, if they are better it'll be because Hartman is back. -

Haha... I'm pretty sure there aren't many players coming to this board or any other board for advice. Pretty sure they'll be alright. -

I have to say, it would be pretty cool to see this team come back mostly intact and see them reach their true potential. Still worry about not having a true PG though. -

I think this is a pretty good guess. Why does everyone think Priller and Gelon will be gone? I realize Priller is probably close to graduating, but part of me thinks we will have to carry him out kicking and screaming. Is Gelon just because he will see the writing on the wall for lack of PT? -
Too bad they didn't want manic energy.

Wow! That's bold! Not saying we don't eventually get there, but preseason with a new coach? Not sure how many would be willing to vote us preseason top 10. -
Sorry, wasn't trying to be a Purdue Person. Just saying that it depends on what he's looking for. An assistant job may be it. Maybe he's decided he doesn't like the head coaching gig.
-
I'll abstain from comment. Just too easy...

He got fired. You usually have to take a step back when that happens. If he wants to stay at a big program, an assistant job makes sense. If you learn under a successful coach, people are more willing to give you another chance.

Damn you! You suckered me into listening to DD. That's something I try to avoid at all costs. One thing about DD, if you don't like what he's saying, give it a few minutes and he'll contradict himself a few times. I think he just does that so he can always say he was right. What a windbag that guy is... Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I wouldn't say nobody played D. We definitely weren't good as a team, but there were some individuals who played decently at times. I definitely got the feeling it wasn't being stressed. However, I spent a good portion of the season watching JBJ on D. Yes, I get he is a great scorer, but he absolutely killed the team. I can't tell you how many times he lost his man and then just picked up whoever was closest or easiest for him to guard. This lead to confusion for the whole defense, and usually an opposing player who was left unguarded. Those were the times that he actually showed some interest in playing D, which definitely wasn't a given. When the coach accepts mediocrity and lack of discipline, the players are more than willing to accept it. Hopefully, that could be the difference in JBJ being a true team contributor or just a shot hunter. -

I don't take offense to the deflections. I've just never heard anyone talk about them as much as Crean did. It's PART of a defensive philosophy, not what you base your whole judgement on. -

My guess is that if he stays and wants to play, it will be on Archie's terms. IF not, you're right, he's probably better moving on. -
Ha! Let's hope we never hear the word "deflections" ever come from his mouth.

I was around for Alford's glory years and wanted nothing to do with him. I truly think we got one of the best young coaches out there and we will be pretty happy even to see what he is able to do with whatever players decide to stay from Crean's tenure. I'm not saying he is the next Bob Knight, but the situations are pretty similar. Knight wasn't immediately accepted by a lot of the fan base, based on what I've read. Many were turned off by his slow-it-down offensive style. Winning cures all, and I think in a few years, the fan base will look back and wonder how we managed to bring this guy in. We missed on Stevens because he was young and unproven, same with Matta and some others. I contend that Miller offers a floor about where we are right now, and a much higher ceiling. Once he starts building relationships with HS players and coaches, we will be on our way.

I'll take Archie over Sean all day. We know what Sean can do with tons of talent. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app
