He’s 6’10”. People define athleticism differently. He’s not a pogo stick player but the foot speed is fine and he’s a decent rebounder.

We are getting a little ahead of ourselves on him adding, but — Hatton is more Walker than Sparks. He’s a better shooter than Walker but not probably quite as athletic. Walker played as a 4/5, Sparks could only play the 5. you can go two ways about filling in the backup 4/5: find someone who plays like Ballo but isn’t nearly as good or find someone who isn’t as good as Ballo but adds something that Ballo doesn’t. The first strategy might work if ballo gets hurt, the second is trying to maximize the team if ballo is healthy. I prefer strategy #2.

A couple of other notes about Hatton: Bellarmine's slower pace make his stats look a little lesser than they actually are. KenPom has Hatton in the top 500 D1 players in 5 categories: 1. offensive rebounding rate (463rd) 2. defensive rebounding rate (252nd) 3. turnover rate (187th) 4. block rate (355th) 5. fouls committed (as in NOT committing fouls) (444th)

I'm higher on Langdon Hatton than most on here. Bellarmine starting letting get up a few threes last year and he made 33% (15 of 45). He was a four year varsity player at North Harrison and the three point shooting he started showing last year isn't just something that showed up -- he was a 39% three point shooter in high school with a signficant number of attempts. Pretty good for a 6'10" kid. I also like that a player like him offers more flexibility than players we have had like Sparks and Durr who were overpowering players at mid majors. I think Hatton's game translates better because it isn't really based on being more physically imposting.

    VERY incomplete list of centers still in the portal and the 247 center ranking. Some may have signed and 247 hasn't posted yet. Don't see NK and Hatton on the list but there are lots of oversights -- particularly if a player didn't have a recruit ranking coming out of high school. FWIW, Hatton is listed as the #28 overall center in that entered the portal by On3. Will be creating a separate list for power forwards as some guys that play the 4 or 5 get listed as 4's. On three point shooting, I only gave totals if there was a significant number of threes taken. 247 C rank Last name First name Former school Height mpg ppg rpg bpg FG% 3pt shooting FT% 2 Osobor Great Utah St 6'8" 33.6 17.7 9 1.4 59 64 20 Miller Baba Florida St 6'11" 24.8 7.6 4.9 1.1 55 24 of 82 (29%) 56 28 Cisse Moussa Ole Miss 6'10" 17.6 4.5 4.6 1.4 56 26 29 Onyenso Ugonna Kentucky 6'11" 18.8 3.6 4.8 2.8 55 59 39 Wright Kijana USC 6'9" 12 3.9 2.6 0.3 58 71 47 Allen Max Marist 6'9" 22.4 11.4 3.8 0.3 52 66 53 Pohto Kenny Wichita State 6'11" 22.4 8.8 5.9 0.3 47 9 of 43 (21%) 63 56 Edmonds Trey Texas-SA 6'9" 22.2 7 5.8 0.4 56 46 59 Anselem-Ibe Frank Georgia 6'10" 9.1 2.6 2.1 0.7 63 63 60 Powell Duncan Sacremento St 6'8" 26.5 12.1 7 0.3 54 14 of 49 (29%) 69 61 Reeves Christian Duke 7'1" 3 game 62 Okorafor Emmanuel Louisville 6'9" 7 2.4 2.2 0.5 65 53 65 Boayke Enoch Fresno St 6'10" 22.7 7.5 7.7 1.2 62 49 67 Wheeler Roosevelt VCU 6'10" 4.9 0.6 0.7 0.1 57 33 68 Brown-Ferguson Javonte Western Mich 7' 15.7 8.8 4.2 1 58 54 69 Mutombo Ryan Georgetown 7'2" 3.7 0.7 1.2 0.1 38 56 71 Colbert Jerrell Kansas State 6'10" 11.3 2.6 2.3 1 48 52 74 Gardner Jazz Nevada 7' 6.5 2.5 2 0.2 45 44 75 Coleman-Jones Jared Middle Tenn 6'10" 28.1 11 7.6 1.1 45 19 of 43 (44%) 77 77 King Fredrick Creighton 6'10" 6.4 2.6 2.2 0.3 57 52 78 Bradford Davion New Mexico St 7' 10 2.5 2 0.5 76 35 79 Loveday Zach Samford 7' 6.5 2.8 1.7 0.6 71 64 80 Gray Josh South Carolina 6'11" 10 3.2 2.8 0.6 54 49 81 Linguard Carlton Texas-SA 6'11" 25.3 9.3 6.2 1.5 42 38 of 124 (32%0 79 82 Keita Keba Utah 6'7" 16.2 8.3 5.4 1.1 61 56 83 Okpomo Emmanuel Temple 6'10" 6 0.7 0.9 0.3 75 67 84 Njie Mo SMU 6'10" 3.5 0.8 1.1 0.2 39 0 of 2 85 Zona Matt Notre Dame 6'9" 11.2 2.3 2.3 0.1 62 13 of 41 (32%) 35 87 Paar Chase Towson 6'9" 11.3 3.3 2.1 0.4 52 63 88 Marial Chol Oregon St 7'2" 11.7 2.3 2.4 1 37 80 89 Iriel Patrick USC Upstate 6'10" 8.8 3 2 0.4 67 27 90 Jones Joe Canisius 6'9" injured

i remember when Purdue fans used to make fun of Crean for over signing. painter oversigned this year by four players and even with Edey going pro and Morton and Gillis going into the portal, he is over the allotment by 1….which means he’ll have to ‘persuade’ an incoming freshman to go the prep school route or force someone to give up their scholly. So someone is getting Paintered.

Seems to me the perfect real world lessons are the ones that provide life lessons in how not to do things. As you said, they are kids (or young adults). Not a surprise they are going to do some things in the wrong way….best way to learn and do it better in the future. Personally, I’d be more concerned with the ultra privileged kids who simply don’t give a **** about the world outside their own dorm room.

Interesting case -- Bewley twins are in the portal. They signed with Chicago State last year (I am sure they ended up there largely because their eligibility was in question and Chicago State could afford to have the open spots if they didn't become eligible). NCAA is still ruling them ineligible as the case makes it through the courts. Their crime? Making money off of their name, image, and likeness while playing for Overtime Elite -- about $31,000 more than the expenses to cover beyond their education, room, board, and travel expenses. Seems very strange because they basically are saying that players can't profit from their name, image, and likeness UNLESS it is done when they are in college. https://www.on3.com/news/former-ote-stars-ryan-matt-bewley-enter-ncaa-transfer-portal-amid-ongoing-eligibility-case/

Here is one that makes a lot of sense: Koba Keita entered the portal. 6’8” center (Utah). Two years of elibility. 8.3 pts, 5.4 reb, and 1.1 blocks per game in 16.6 minutes. Very much a poor man’s Omaur Ballo. and…..like Ballo, he’s from Mali. If he were willing to play 10 to 15 minutes behind Ballo and then take the starting spot as a senior, it would be a nice transition. Not sure he would to do that, but that would be ideal.

One thing I think that does need to bee noted is who has contacted NK and who has contacted Hatton. NK we haven't heard much about who has contacted him. I am guessing that since he hasn't set up a visit (to our knowledge) or committed, he's hung up on playing time he would get at IU. Hatton has had contact from Clemson, Minnesota, IU, Ohio State, and Louisville. So at least five P5 schools. Probably says coaching staffs feel that Hatton is the better player -- and they probably feel he's a capable backup 5.

A 5 with some upside IMO still only gets about 10 minutes/game -- at MOST. There are going to be some times when IU goes small and Reneau shifts there. It's really not like IU has big minutes to offer. Payton Sparks was our backup 5 last year and saw less than 200 minutes of court time last year. While our backup 5 will probably see more than this year, I expect you'll see Ballo have more court minutes than he had at Arizona. I don't see him playing 25 minutes/game....would expect him to be more around 28/30. TJD averaged about 33 mpg under Woodson. Ke'lel Ware averaged 32.

Nikita is more physical but he's not a great athlete. Plus rebounder but not very fast and he's not going to take any shots outside the paint. Hatton is a more skilled player -- not as physical, an okay rebounder, but does offer a more well rounded offensive game. Also NK really couldn't ever be on the floor with Ballo while Hatton could. I can't speak to the defense from either -- they don't show those kind of things on highlight reels unless the player is a big shot blocker. Couple of notes on Hatton: he started slow last year but finished really, really strong. The first seven games he only scored 30 points -- at the end of November he was 11 of 40 from the field, 1 of 5 from three....through 7 games he was averaging 4.3 points and 4.9 rebounds. The last 24 games of the season he was 118 of 229 from the field (52%), 14 of 40 from three (35%) and averaged 12.3 points and 7.1 rebounds. That said, Bellarmine was really bad last year and it's always hard to gauge how good a player is on a bad team. It can be hard to produce on a bad team but sometimes they are part of the reason the team was bad. But in terms of NK v. Hatton, I have no idea. Guess it depends on what you want.
