IUBB vs Wright State - Thursday, 11.16.23 @ 7:00 on BTN
RaceToTheTop replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I have no idea why he hasn't been playing for Wright State. Last year he played in 33 games, started 5, and played a significant role -- 17 min/game, 6.7 points/game, and shot extremely well: 52% overall, 48% from three, 85% from the line. Effective field goal percentage of 62%. The worst defensive players in D1 should still get on the court if they shot that well. But he had only gotten in Colorado State for blowout minutes and I think was only put in at the very end of the Toledo game when they were looking for some offense. The funny thing that he still didn't start tonight with Calvin out. If Calvin plays, Welage probably wouldn't have seen the court much tonight. -

Although Mgbako didn't hit from deep tonight, we got him shots. Keep feeding him because if there is a guy that could go off from three, it's him. Probably just need him to get off of his head, but not feeding him when he's open would keep him in his head even worse. MM had a bad first half defensively but I thought the second half was the best defense he's played this year. Walker needs to not shoot another three this year. Ware has been better than I thought he would be. X had a rough game. Did think he had made a couple of plays defensively but got called for fouls that weren't there. Don't know the extent of the injury but hopes it's not too bad. Glad to see him walk off but he definitely looked like he was in pain on the bench. -

Not that it matters, but here is a screen shot of Holden's winning shot when he catches the ball. Prior to this, both feet were out of bounds. He must establish both feet in bounds before he can touch the ball. There were some better angles of it, but this is what I get off of youtube. -

Yeah, that was the absolute highway robbery game where the ref completely missed that Holden was out of bounds (not only did he not establish both feet back in the court, but actually had a heel out of bounds when he caught it) on the game winning shot. -

If you are looking to 'spot the rando' who would go off from three, Andrew Welage played a decent amount for them last year (17 minutes per game) but is barely seeing the court this year in the first two games. He played 9 minutes against Colorado State when they were blown out and only two minutes against Toledo in a game they lost by one. I don't know why he's been buried on the bench this year, but he shot 48% from three last year. He's from Greensburg, Indiana and it seems that sometimes randos from Indiana have big nights at Assembly Hall. -

FWIW, Indiana is 317th in D1 in three pointers taken per field goal attempt. Wright State is even lower at 326th.....and nearly half (12 of their 31) have been taken by Trey Calvin, who is out tonight. Calvin is really good -- scored 33 against Colorado State and 22 against Toldeo -- and was 6 of 12 from three. The rest of the team has only shot 19 threes, making 4. Their go to has been interior points, mostly on drives by Colvin or Holden, and from post play from their center, A.J. Braun. Defensively they've been poor and they do turn it over some. They shot a high percentage but, again, but a lot of inside shots. Numbers make them look like an extreme iso team -- only 23 assists on 61 makes. They went 9 deep in each of their first two guys although the ninth man didn't play much and they will be 8 deep with Calvin out. -

Army is worse than Wright State and the game thread was 41 pages. -
Illinois down 6 to Marquette, 8 min left
-
Wright State offensively is pretty good but like IU, they have hardly shot any threes. Defensively they’ve struggled.
-
Wright State ball down 1, 9 seconds left. Will get a shot to win it.
-
Toledo up 1, 21 seconds left
-
Wisconsin getting clown stomped by Providence -- 45-23 with 16 1/2 minutes left.

2024 PG Daquan Davis to Florida State
RaceToTheTop replied to Gnet550's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
I don't know -- just pulling them off his player page. I think he is best and driving and dishing and his outside game is developing. He is putting up close to 6 assists per game in about 25 minutes. FWIW, he's averaging 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists and his OTE team is 8-1. -

Think you meant South Lake. Anyway, it looks like it was a 'preseason' game, so just an exhibition game against a local high school before they go on to play their actual national competition. FWIW, South Lake actually went 16-11 last year and play in Florida's largest class (6A) I believe. Enrollment over 2,000. But playing against a team like Montverde is just another level. -

I know you got slack for posting his numbers, but he just put up back to back good games: 17 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds followed by 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists. Also shot 14 of 23 and 4 of 9 from three. Only three turnovers to the sixteen assists in the pair of games -
FWIW, the 2022-23 season listed as DNP he stepped away from the program altogether. But yeah, very strange grant of an extra year given those they've turned down. For reference, Ali Patberg had as long of a college career as I've seen: 2015-16 Notre Dame (injured) 2016-17 Notre Dame 2017-18 transfer to Indiana (had to sit out) 2018-19 Indiana 2019-20 Indiana 2020-21 Indiana 2021-22 Indiana (extra covid year) The Trey Woodbury decision was the one that still baffles me.

FWIW, the 40% from three was only on 15 threes. Will be worth seeing tonight if they shot a low volume of threes as well. -

To be fair, it’s more than one game. He’s had three years to show he belongs. That said, at some point if Gunn can’t show anything then Leal should get his spot minutes -

What’s your traditional 5 in this scenario if you are ‘sliding’ MM to the 4? Because if your lineup is X, Gallo, Cupps, MM and Ware, MM is already at the 4. If there is one thing I want to avoid, it’s giving Cupps even spot minutes right now. He’s a liability. If you only have three playable guards, that means limited time with all three on the floor. -

I know that we are pounding on Reneau here....he did have 5 assists last night. But there were so many plays ran through him that he was kind of put in the TJD role last night. This is a game where last year TJD would have had double digit assists. -

Re: playing Cupps, X, and Galloway together We have four guards. One of them is C.J. Gunn. If Cupps, X and Galloway are playing together, the only guard sub is C.J. Gunn. I'm not wild on having him as the only option as that means he's playing significant minutes. I'm also not wild thinking about when we start playing P5 teams having Cupps defend. -

It definitely seems that Reneau and MM are having the most trouble on the perimeter switches. Ware isn't other than the one occasion tonight when he should have switched to X's man. Ware has closed on the perimeter well.. -

Re: On 'not playing MM'...... He's averaging 17 minutes/game. It's not like he has stuck with him overly long. But I also fully believe that in practice he has shown that he is a guy that should be starting. Having it not go well for the first two games of career doesn't change his talent level. I'm not sure who you think should be getting minutes and burying him on the bench....Cupps is getting 20+ minutes per game so far. Woodson has had to patchwork plays at the three by either playing three guards or by having Banks there temporarily. MM is going to be good. Gotta be patient.
