So what it was one pass? It was weak and showed what I've been telling you for 2 years. I could have made the throw Ramsey made. I also saw him look to check downs early and often. I saw him throw the ball less than 10 feet several times. Penix hasn't had a chance to succeed because he hasn't played against good football teams yet. Who are you trying to fool? This isn't a discussion about results except you brought up YPA, which was balooned by a horrible team today and against EIU. It was 4.9 last week. 4.9! (Do I have to tell you how awful that is? Penix was 8.2 against BSU and 9.85 v EIU. Ransey was 6.4 for the season last year.) Was that a serious comment that was supposed to prove something?? Ramsey was dead last a year ago in YPA in the power 5 conferences. I'm not pulling any card...I'm giving you facts. Indiana has won two games 90-3 in which Ramsey has looked decent. I'm not putting any stock at all in what on field results have been. I'm telling you the same thing I told you last year. Ramsey's arm's very weak and below average. And it is. The radio crew said so today, the TV crew said so today, and you can either acknowledge that or you can't. Allen himself said it wasn't a decision made because of what Ramsey can't do but what Penix can...which is throw the football WAY better. -
(2020) SF Jordan Geronimo to Maryland
Old Friend replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Perea was classic Crean trying to out-think the room and believe he had a diamond in the rough nobody else had found. We had 8-10 of those kids under him. Perea had one ability (I can't even call it a skill). He could jump. Let's not equate Geronimo to Perea or even limit what we think of him simply because we know he has the same ability to jump. Geronimo looks like, talks like, and acts a lot more like Oladipo than Perea. But....I hate comparisons of players and I hate worrying about what kids can contribute as freshmen. We saw a year ago relying on a freshman isn't good business. Geronimo looks to me to be a kids who'll help the program and given his upward curve of improvement, I really love that he committed to Indiana. -

You saw his throw to a wide open Hale, right? That's the reason. Any arm strength at all, that's a touchdown. YAY!! He had good TPA against UConn! Still doesn't change that he was dead last a year ago in the power 5 conferences. Penix isn't any kind of savior, but unless you're blind or have an agenda, it's pretty obvious why he was chosen as the starter. There is nothing Ramsey can do that Penix can't, but Penix is a much better athlete with a much better arm than captain checkdown. Your inferences do not equal others' meaning. That's on you. Ramsey was fine in games Indiana won by a combined 90-3. But if you can't see his deficiencies and inability to throw the ball accurately and consistently beyond 10-15 yards, you're not looking. UConn and EIU are awful football teams. -

I just hope Allen doesn't use it as a chance to sprint back into his Ramsey safety cave. I can completely see that. -

How in the holy hell can you make the claim he isn't capable of winning big road games? We beat MSU at MSU last season for the love of God. Are you just making things up, hoping we have a horrible season so you can be "right?" The way you guys judge Miller is unbelievable to me. You've seen exactly one season with a single one of his recruits playing even a minute; and last season's roster was flawed on top of significant injury. Why don't we just sign coaches to one year contracts and then ask you guys if we should keep him or not? Would that make you happy? At this point in time, serious question, what would make you happy? If Glass came out tomorrow and said he was letting go of Tom Allen and Archie Miller, it seems you dudes would throw a parade. We might as well hire Big Bird. You'd treat him the same way, -

I think Archie was a good hire and will be just fine. Find me in 3 years. One of us will be wrong. Franklin can shoot just fine. So can Hunter....who was recruited last year. Again, I'm not into fabricated negativity. Saying he didn't recruit shooters isn't accurate and we have 2 coming next season. -

I really disagree that "it's looking bad." I think that's way too dramatic and way too short sighted. How exactly does Archie sit in the 3rd position? Results? Both Mack and Holtmann walked into more experienced and better balanced teams, and neither completely changed the system like Miller did. Crean's teams couldn't guard. Miller's system is largely based on defense. Based on what is it "quite possible" Hoiberg is better??? What? Are you really ready to jump off a building enough to worry about Nebraska? The sky falling? Hoiberg wasn't ever a candidate for IU. Where are you getting your information? Why are you assuming the worst and also that every shiny thing is better than what we have? There is no evidence to that at all. Glass has made perhaps ONE poor hiring decision, and I just laid out for you a reason why he made it. You make it sound as though he has been a comedy of errors and that's just not accurate. His hiring of Archie Miller can't come close to being evaluated yet, and objectively, I would say things there are FAR better than the picture you paint. He's hired baseball, women's basketball, and other coaches who have developed programs at IU and/or improved them. What "hiring decisions" do you disagree with....stepping back from the ledge and looking logically? Other than Allen, and I think even someone as biased as you are can see the reason in it. How exactly....seriously...is anything "looking bad???" I couldn't disagree more unless you think Rome can be built in a day and everything on which you're judging is based on results from basically year one of even a single of his recruits playing a minute at Indiana. Did Phinsee's injury matter? Did Morgan's? Did Romeo's? Good grief.....at least let it play out before you judge. At the end of the day, I don't have any patience for fabricated or imagined negativity. If it plays out that Allen and Archie need to go, they will. As much as you're upset with Glass, you have to acknowledge he's let coaches go when it's been time to do so. And Archie was largely applauded when he was hired. Amazing to me how many turn on him, despite the realities of his teams. -

If you're concerned about the hiring process of Tom Allen, I don't disagree. I also don't know who we could have attracted having fired Wilson and the division we play in. I also don't know that I'd argue too much about whether or not Allen had shown he deserved an opportunity. He had to coach the Pinstripe Bowl...and the defense had improved a lot. I know for sure others were contacted. Glass may not have heard what he wanted to hear and just pulled the trigger to maintain continuity - which at that time and with back to back bowl appearances was more important that some credit. There will always be something shinier than what you have. I think Archie will be just fine. Will he be better than Ohio State every year? I doubt it. Will Ohio State be better every year? I doubt it. Mack's a good coach and had about the same success in the A-10 as Archie had. Indiana beat Louisville a year ago, and was very close w a more experienced and deeper Ohio State team. I don't see the disparity you do. And to answer a question asked above by someone else : the entirety of IU Althletics is improving. Individual programs and the program as a whole are growing and improving. No AD will ever lose his job because a football coach in his 3rd year has maintained where the program was. I think a lot of you will be eating some raw crow before 2021. -

Listen.....and I'll be as kind as I can. Don't make the mistake of assuming what I'm happy with. You have absolutely zero idea what you're talking about and I have no interest in trying to convince you if you can't come up with anything but "fire so and so" and pretend you know more about coaching and using players than he does. You either saw the late season progress a year ago or you didn't. Manifested for me in the improvement of DeVonte Green, on whom I have been very hard. I choose to look beyond the reach of my low beam headlights and try to understand meaning of events. He has recruited shooters, which he hasn't had. It's kinda' tough to score if everyone can pack the lane on you. Leaders, which this program has needed in droves for a decade. Kids who will stay 4 years. He's jettisoned the long, athletically gifted but basketball limited kids like Forrester and Moore. He's very obviously growing, and yeah...he's young. Defense got better. Indiana managed to post a winning record despite many lost games due to injury, no depth in the front court, and no shooters. Last season looked at through a different prism had more successes than you give credit for. Was I happy with the end result? Hell no. But...I don't need to see what I want to see in year 3 "or else FIRE HIM!" That's so....cheap and short sighted. I said what I said about Mr. Basketball's because of what I think it'll mean on the floor. Not for the simple fact. Get out of the mental kiddie pool. Don't drag me into any "people like me" category. That's weak and elementary. I'm talking on a different plane than you are. Just truth. On your plane which is narrow and shallow, it's easy to categorize "people like me." But you're not looking at it the same way I am, so you have no idea what people like me will be happy with and if you really believe what you said about me, you have NO idea at all of my history. Just be careful making stupid comments like that. -

Honest answer. I believe in Archie. I saw what happened a year ago and I see the general direction of the program. Barring regression, I will never be someone who believes in throwing mud against the wall until something sticks in the shirt term is the right way to run an athletic program. So....no, I wouldn't fire him yet. Bill Bekichick had a poor record with the Browns. Think they regret letting him go? I suspect Glass believes in Archie and sees the recruits, the direction, etc. It is very likely Indiana will secure 3 straight Indiana Mr. Basketball winners. I'm not sure that's ever been done, and certainly not more than once or twice. I am on record as saying I want Indiana to get old and stay old. Sounds to me like you aren't even willing to allow them to GET old. Firing coaches every 3 years until one produces a year of your desired results would differ nothing to build a program. And it's short sighted. If I were.....interviewing for Archie's job if it became available in March, U'd be awfully leery of the opportunity unless the program showed obvious signs of regression. My question for you is why are you so driven to assume and expect the worst? Are you that anti-Glass that you want HIM gone to prove you right? I'm not a witch hunter. I don't call for jobs unless it's obvious a d I know for sure I can get better w someone else. Indiana University's biggest problem is higher than Fred Glass. You want to call for someone's head? Look higher. But do me a favor. Please raise your expectations if qualified people. Archie Miller was a good hire in paper and until he proves otherwise, on the floor and for the program as welll. Look for positive signs and expect success. Rooting for failure of qualified people for the sake of an "I told you so" is exhausting. As are witch hunts. Both Miller and Fred Glass deserve better, and if yoy'd for a second look through a wider lens, your perspective might change. You and others aren't spending much time looking at what's positive in the men's basketball program, and you seem hell bent on getting someone fired. That's not my bag if I feel someone is qualified and capable. I think both men are -

Last season was the first a single one of his recruits played a minute for him here, and we had a few significant injuries. Team played better late and players who didn't fit are gone. Breathe a minute and let's avoid the "immediate satisfaction or the coach gets fired" mentality. Good gravy. -

First of all, thank you. I disagree with you, and I'll explain the best I can. I think you have to take emotion out of it and look chronologically; then apply true logic. I'm not defending Tom Crean...don't get me wrong. I AM defending Fred Glass. Yes, I know him. Yes, I am a bit biased, but that doesn't make me wrong. The man ran the Indianapolis Capital Improvement Board during a time when the city went through HUGE growth. He's no idiot as some here would have you believe. So for me, there's a lot of lost credibility with the comments to that effect. Okay, so let's go back to 2000 because that's when this really starts. Bob Knight gets fired and Mike Davis. *Indiana reaches Big Ten Tournament final in year 1 *IU receives pressure from NAACP, Jesse Jackson, etc and gives Davis full time contract instead of doing a national search (yes..problem can be traced back to here. Mike Davis should have never been hired on a permanent basis, and I know with 100% certainty that Rick Pitino wanted the job. I would assume at that time, Indiana could have had whoever they wanted. This is why I disagree with you and say the NAACP can in fact take some blame because of the rest of this timeline that never would have happened if we hadn't caved; and Fred Glass was not involved then) *Davis complains he is "the lowest paid coach in the Big Ten," and more pressure on then AD Michael McNeely, who is forced to give Davis a raise AND an extension; IU goes to final four. Davis receives additional contract incentives * Davis "resigns" 4 years later citing unity of fan base. Depending on who you talk to, IU offers the job to Kevin Stallings or John Belien, who had a contract in hand. Adam Herbert (The Velvet Fog) steps in and demands (due to more pressure from special interest groups and his own vanity) IU hire a minority to replace Davis. And...Herbert thought Sampson was black. Still something I find hysterical *Sampson does Sampson things and Indiana hires Dakich, who cleans house and we end up a few months later with Tom Crean, some freshmen, some walks ons and a manager. *Crean asks for and receives an extension after year two, stating it will take time to rebuild the program, which was left empty. *2010 Cody Zeller commits (would you have fired Crean after THIS season, his 3rd, and risked losing Zeller?) * December, 2011 Indiana beats Kentucky. Indiana makes Sweet 16 (would you have fired Crean here?) *2013 Indiana wins Big Ten Title (can't fire him here, right?) *2013 recruiting then/2014/2015 Indiana is disappointing, but has a strong roster, and players like Noah Vonleh. Thomas Bryant, and "the movement" commit to IU. Indiana starts 2015 season 10-2, and sees a top 10 ranking for a week (I could have made a case for letting him go, but IU made the NCAA Tournament and record improved over 2014, so I get it) *2016 Indiana wins Big Ten title again *2018 Due to inconsistecy and other things, Crean is fired (this was the first logical time it could have happened in my mind) *Archie Miller is hired and I believe absolutely on the right track. You can disagree, but I see above that even success won't convince some people, so as my dad would have said, I may be pi$$ing up a rope. But if people are logical and step away from emotion, I'll submit yet again that the problems with the basketball program began with hiring Mike Davis, remained when they hired Kelvin Sampson, and Glass' hands were tied w Crean because he did "just enough" at the right times. (and you guys were all on board when we were winning Big Ten titles) IU's BOT and administrations can be blamed a hell of a lot more than anyone else if you ask me. So...where does the blame lie with Fred Glass? Logically....where? Crean DID inheret a bag of crap as did Archie in year one. That cupboard was thin. Maybe not bare, but thin. Year 2 was better and you can see whats's going on over there. I just don't see where Glass is culpable...really at all for the last 20 years. He did what he had to do when he had to do it. -

You would get no argument from me re: McRobbie. I can't find blame w Glass except to say his hiring of Allen may prove to be a mistake. Other than that, I just don't see where he needs to shoulder much blame because a whole lot is going damned well. Including men's basketball. Looking at what "is" vs. what "was,"the view is very different. -

You just lost all credibility. First of all, saying that about Sampson is conjecture at best. Myopia defined. Sampson did more than make phone calls. Don't swipe the drugs, hookers, lack of going to class, and legal trouble of the players under the carpet in order to fit your narrative. That's weak. Second, 2 Big Ten titles is not a disaster. Crean inhereted a disaster...left by your "great coach" and ultimately couldn't win consistently and he was fired. You got your wish. Glass did what he should have done...and yet you still b*tch. Why? He fired the coach who didn't win to Indiana's standards. Again....What's your point??? Things are picking up drastically in the basketball program, and you can either choose to acknowledge that or ignore it. Up to you, but one is real, the other is you complaining for the sake of it. Third, Glass has not failed at "his job." I lined out for you what his job is. He's failed in YOUR eyes because you want something different. His job is not defined by fans or the media. His job is defined by Michael McRobbie. Why is that so hard for you? We're not Duke and we're not Kentucky (and I have zero interest in BEING Kentucky.) What if IU returns to basketball success in the next 2-3 years? What will you have to complain about? You're really basing this entire line of BS on losing to Purdue last season because that cost us a bowl bid, and basketball is going to be just fine. Glass DID fire Crean. He did a search and found a coach that not only recruits the way Indiana did when it was its most successful but showed obvious growth a year ago. Anyway, there are 3-4 of you who can't widen your lens and accept reality, so I'll let you go on arguing that Fred Glass should lose his job based on the past you're not happy with. Have at it. When you come back to reality, let me know. -

IU won 2 Big Ten titles under Crean. Spaced out 3 seasons apart. When was Glass supposed to fire Crean during that time??? You're myopic rather than realistic. When it was time to let Crean go, Glass did. What would you have done differently? IU became embarrassing in basketball when we hired Mike Davis, then extended him because the NAACP threatened to storm campus if IU didn't. Then again when Adam Herbert demanded a minority replace Davis, and we ended up with Kelvin Sampson. This goes back way before Fred Glass and like I keep telling YOU....way higher. What is it you're hung up on? Crean DIDN'T keep his job. He was fired 3 seasons after a Big Ten title because he couldn't be consistent or make a Sweet 16. He was here 9 years. The first 2 or 3 of which were a dumpster fire not of his creation. Then, he made the NCAa tournament, beat Kentucky, won 2 Big Ten titles.... when was the time to fire him then? Giving a coach just 2 seasons is generally suicide because it sends a message to anyone else who might want the job. Take a step back. What are you really asking? What's your point different than mine other than yoi'd have liked s better search when Wilson was fired? -

First point....I don't think black jerseys signal anything but a marketing money grab. Black isn't one of our colors, and I'd rather stay away from it. You could sell me something different within a color scheme, but black jerseys with all of the red and white everywhere just don't fit in my opinion. One reason is I have no interest in wearing a primary color of our main rival. To answer your question, I need to ask you one. What do you think Fred Glass' job is? His bosses want and wanted him to improve IU Athletics overall, increase donations. Improve facilities, and develop the IU brand while staying in the black financially. He has done ALL of those things. Has he handled football perfectly? No. But.. the reality is compared only to history....Indiana is winning, on average, more games per season right now than they ever have save for a few exceptions. That truth sucks, too. So.....yeah, given the reality of Fred Glass' job as dictated by his superiors, he should absolutely keep his job. If IU makes a bowl game and you and others see the necessary improvement on the basketball floor, I truly don't know what you can argue about in that vein. If Indiana goes 5-7 or worse again, Tom Allen's seat SHOULD be pretty hot, and I imagine it will be. I believe he earned the opportunity. You may disagree. Keeping him without success would be a mistake, but I don't believe giving him the opportunity necessarily was. Hindsight is what it is, and with the benefit of it, it's easy to comment about what should have happened. There are a whole lot of "should have's" in my life -

Cam Cameron had teams that were "crazy fun to watch," and his record was the same as Allen's has been. Never more than 5 wins a season. He also tried black jerseys and it failed miserably. That's not the answer; and kids don't care. A carousel of coaches isn't the answer, either. The only thing Indiana can do is build a brand of their own as Mike Leach did w Texas Tech. (Oklahoma State's not a great comparison because we don't have T. Boone Pickens) I haven't defended and won't defend Tom Allen, but unless we can go get the next Mike Leach, Allen's recruiting classes are improving dramatically compared to some 10 years ago, and we may HAVE that consistent 6 win team you speak of. You're writing off this season as if it's not what you're after, and we don't know yet. I'm completely on board with the poor tackling, way too frequent personal fouls and phony toughness of Allen's defense; and his loyalty to a weak quarterback is baffling. I just don't think constant coach turnover is the answer, and I certainly don't blame Fred Glass. -

Your eyes and or they don't. You either saw what happened late last season or you didn't. You see the recruits we're attracting or you don't. You either understand that "3 years under Archie" will really be only 2 because not one player he recruited played even a minute for him in year one, and ALL of the players who did were recruited to play in a completely different system. You either acknowledge the roster turnover and current structure or you don't. Am I supposed to care what "experts" say? Or am I supposed to think for myself, look at the players, the changes, and the coaches and make up my own mind? I think I'll go for the latter and wait to be proven right. You can stay negative if you want to. You know me well enough to know I'm not exactly a myopic pollyanna; so I'll firmly stand behind this and take any bullets that come my way if I'm wrong; but I expect you to do the same. Fred Glass' keeping his job has very little to do with football. Don't kid yourself. Your last statement is the true statement; and since Archie has played his recruits in just one season, he's going to get time; and anyone with eyes can see things are getting better over there. I'm as excited for the basketball program as I've been since 2013.
