Yep. Making too many low IQ mistakes. -
We "hung" with UI, but didn't really challenge for the win (IMO). We played a solid game at Madison and had every right to get the 'W'. But that's the problem: Every now and then we have a game like at UW and think/hope maybe things are finally clicking. Then, invariably, we quickly prove that those rare games are aberrations. To challenge for trophies and rings you have to play well, against any and all comers game in and game out. Every team has the occasional "great outing".

Not enough evidence to overturn the original call, IMO. -
I'm really eager to see if we play with the same general demeanor we showed last night. I yearn to get the feeling we're "turning the corner" - we just need to play like we did last night on a regular basis.

Hoping to start 2021 off by watching OSU get humiliated (again).

IUBB vs Penn State - 12/29/20 @ 8:30 on BTN

Post game, CAM thinks the team was fatigued late in the second half. I'd have to ask why? Plenty of substitutions and our strength/conditioning coach is supposedly superior. -

What Can IUBB do to Revive Your Excitement/Confidence?
pumpfake replied to Loaded Chicken Sandwich's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Not specific to our team or coach, but the writing is eventually on the wall for the majority of coaches eventually. After the game the other night I was reminded of the Jud Heathcote joke about "the two envelopes" : "When I got to MSU Gus was cleaning out his desk. As he left, he said he left me two envelopes, each containing a three word message. Gus told me not to open the envelopes unless things were not going well." "Well, sure enough after the first year things were bad, so I opened the First envelope and read the three words: "blame your predecessor". So I told the press and alumni that the cupboard was bare and I needed more time." " A few games into the second year things were bad again. Out of desperation, I opened the second envelope. It also contained three words; "Prepare two envelopes." -

I'd just add Underwood to the list of recent coaches that turned things around in the same timeframe. -
What Can IUBB do to Revive Your Excitement/Confidence?
pumpfake replied to Loaded Chicken Sandwich's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Honestly, I can't think of much that can be done short term. I haven't seen any proof that CAM can "coach em' up". I don't have any faith that anything will change with the current players, staff, or recruiting fortunes in the foreseeable future. Beyond that, I'm tired of bringing in modestly successful coaches or an unproven one. We are mired in mediocrity with a fanbase that expects much more and an administration which doesn't. -

Did they pass the smelling salts around in the locker room? The patient appears to have regained conciousness. -

My memories of Reed was that of a kid that busted his butt and gave everything he had. Anyone who saw him refuse to leave the game with a dislocated shoulder knows what I mean. -
Parker or Aminu: If You Had to Pick One?
pumpfake replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
In our long standing need for shooting, Parker gets the nod. Also, adding a guy with impressive academic accomplishment and experience at the D1 level bolsters the case. The issue I have is that the '21 recruiting class has been, in a nushell, a failure - adding AM to the list of misses just makes it worse. Parker Stewart could be a significant boost when he's up to speed, only time will tell. One way I like to look at this, along with the CAM tenure as a whole, is in retrospect. If someone said a year ago that we'd end up with Duncomb as our main freshman, along with a transfer originally ranked in the mid-200's coming out of H.S., I suspect most would be rather unhappy. Getting Lander in a year early does ease the disappointment to an extent, but that occurred while most of our other targets were uncommitted and subsequently Archie has practically whiffed on closing the deal(s). Ultimately, it's wins and losses that matter. Perhaps CAM will "do more with less", maybe not. Bottom line for me is, and has been, it's time to put up or shut up, no more excuses. -
Odd thoughts (h/t to the late Bob Collins): - While listening to the game yesterday, I thought "man, I think I actually would prefer a team that scores easily but defends poorly over this perennial bad to mediocre shooting." Either that, or be an absolute lockdown defensive team. Generally watching our games over the past three years have been mostly frustrating. - Sometimes we need to try to be more objective (as difficult as it may be) about the status of the program. I mean, the experts have picked us to finish in the bottom half of conference every year and as bitter a pill as it is, they've been correct. Rivalries aside, I get the impression our conference opponents don't respect Archie's coaching ability. Heck, we hate purdue and they haven't been to a FF since the 70's, but most IU fans will acknowledge that Painter is a good coach. - As someone mentioned earlier regarding Crean and S16 loss to Syracuse, there is a bit of a deja vu feeling. Remember how a couple of years in advance it was said the Indiana HS class of 2017 (?) was loaded and we needed to cash in big time? Same thing seems to have happened with the '21 class. Our out of state recruiting has been disappointing. - Disappointing is a good word for my attitude toward CAM. Coming in, I thought he'd be an outstanding coach and put a hard-nosed team on the floor. For whatever reason, that hasn't come close to panning out. I admit to being somewhat flummoxed - I think Archie is a quality coach, but some things don't seem to be changing with his teams here (poor FT shooting, anemic offense, etc). I don't think he will or should be canned yet, but the honeymoon period is over IMO, we have to see improvements in results - finishing toward the top in conference, being competitive against good teams every time we play one, and a good style of play and execution. That is all. The season isn't lost, and time will tell how much this team has improved over last year.

Too early to make a definitive assessment, but my guess is Yes we are better - but only incrementally. Sadly, that has been the story of the Miller tenure, marginal improvement year over year.

(2021) PF Trey Kaufman to Purdue
pumpfake replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
I will yep your yep. Thus far CAM has had to build/play/rely on in-state players as we haven't done squat in attracting highly rated players nationally. It takes a combination of talent and coaching to win at a high level. With missing out on stud recruits it makes coaching even more important. It can be done, but it's time to see results - finishing outside the top 4 in the B10 is not getting the job done and Archie is paid too much for mediocre results. -

pumpfake replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Two bottom line items (my opinion only): 1. We need to win, regardless of who is on the roster. If Archie can't win without getting every Mr. Basketball, then he's not a very good coach. This season is critical. 2. Everybody needs to accept the fact that message board "experts" are as reliable as a $2 watch. They may have some insight, but people need to quit acting like those posters are providing anything more than educated guesses. -

Seeing Duncomb hit FT's reliably really makes me happy. Also, I thought Wesley played the best on his team in the first half (with nice quickness too). -

In one of the earlier 2022 games, got to see WLW for the first time - you can see the size and athletic ability, but he was not overly impressive. Looking forward to the 6 pm game. Kauffman and Duncomb looked good, IMO. -
Coronavirus and Sports Only - PLEASE and THANK YOU

Sadly, I tend to agree. One thought that just occurred to me is what if they decide to play a limited season (truncated conference only for instance), then come March they decide to cancel the tournament(s) again. Will the players who participated lose this year of eligibility? Or can they come back and end up playing 4.5 years? It's a mess, that's for sure.
