Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)
pumpfake replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Haven't been on since last night. Had my fingers crossed that this thread title would be edited to "Welcome to IU Coach Stevens". Just going to have to wait a little longer, I guess. -
Lol. It wasn't until I read this post that I got Shapopo's joke.

I still have the "Tom Crean fired" thread in my bookmarks. I looked at a couple of pages from it earlier today....
-
Or priapism if things go how we want them to....
-
HSN down for the count. The fans are uniting - the stars are aligning. It's kismet baby, KISMET!
-
Yes. Screw the celtics, they've benefitted from Indiana guys who should have stayed here for too long (Larry and Brad).
-
One thing: when the AD announces the new coach he (SD) will consider it a home run and say "he's the one guy I really wanted". Hopefully most of us will be saying the same thing.

It's the thought of having to go through another coaching change that worries me about Beilein. He's 68. RMK retired at that age, so it's conceivable that he might not coach past the terms of his first contract. IMO, he's pretty close to a guarantee to get the program turned around and headed in the right direction, so that's in his favor. You watch a ton of CBB - do you think the players we have returning are a good fit for his system? With one recruit signed for next year, it may be very important that the new coach's style of play fit what he inherits unless he can thrive in the transfer market. Like a lot of things in life, timing is key and something we have little control over.

Ditched the Purdue guy....

Or, to Pat Knight himself... It'd at least make Dakich and, apparently, Jay Bilas happy.

Kind of surprised nobody posted the Archie/Howard greeting as a compliment to the Crean one.

I don't recall seeing her at games or broadcasts in the time he was here. I understand she may have preferred to stay out of the limelight, but other than seeing her picture on an avatar she could have been living in Denmark for all I knew. Edit: Saw elsewhere (UD board) that they may have been living elsewhere so their daughter could pursue her gymnastics "career".

That scenario would be MF awesome!

I've seen it and it is quite funny. Apparently there were two of these (or my memory is further gone than I thought) because I went to a similar 50th birthday event at Market Square Arena. The one you mention appeared to be either at AH or somewhere else. The one I attended was quite amusing as well - I'll always remember the story Karen Knight told about him using a towel as a "buffer", lol

We need someone that can get things on the right track rather quickly - not necessarily winning the conference and significant tourney runs in the first 2-3 years, but by improving style of play, team demeanor, and recruiting. IMO it IS possible to do this. It's not something that every quality coach can do. For some it takes 3-5 seasons and the improvement is cumulative (but not at a practically imperceivable pace of improvement like the last 4 years). I remember stating after CAM's first year that he could get us to where we need to be but he showed he wasn't a "miracle worker". The Quick-fix type guy made more sense when Crean was hired than now. I definitely see Beilein as a very good coach but is he a quick turnaround type of guy? IDK. Because of his age there is a high possibility we will be looking for another coach in 5 years, more or less. Then we will be faced with a similar dilemma - trying to find a new coach with all the uncertainty that comes with it. Even having an assistant and succession plan presents that uncertainty (possibly even more). Making a "succession plan" a part of this hiring process is not much different than saying you're hiring whoever the designated successor is. I'm uneasy with that strategy.

All good questions. I'd think it gives him a good selling point for a new gig - he can ask for a low-ball couple of first years and still make the full amount.
-
Well the last 4 (FOUR!) hires had the theoretical chance to coach for 20 years. Hiring an almost 70 year old would eliminate that possibility.

Is that McRobbie's boomerang up near Whiteland?
-
I think (hope) it was a joke - filling in the Brad _______

It was notable that Ostrom's wasn't included..

I'd gladly shoot a SN Torpedo your way.

Probably find out it was a recruiting trip to see a lacrosse player...

Just like clockwork - I see Crean's massive net on this one as always. lol
