(2015) PF Kassoum Yakwe off the board
bnkepner replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
They are probably both power forwards but have two different games. De'ron Davis is more of a stretch 4 and has a highly developed offensive game. Yakwe is not as polished on offense. From all the clips and games on youtube that I've watched he gets most of his buckets in transition, jump shots at the top of the key, and buckets off the pick n roll. Yakwe's strength is his defense. De'ron Davis on the other hand is one of the best stretch 4's in his class. He has the ability to play with his back to the basket as well as create off the dribble. So if you had to say which position they both play, it would be the 4, but they are completely different ball players. -
The "gimmicky gas mask" is an elevation mask that is used by TONS of professional athletes to train. It has medical and scientific studies to back it up, so definitely not a gimmick. All these workouts will only help them get stronger, faster, and better. Want to be able to outlast and outrun the other teams? You have to have the proper training behind it and that isn't only done on the court. A few years ago we wanted to start playing uptempo and being able to outlast and outrun teams and this is how you do it. From the look of these videos IU is lucky to have Anderson as its new strength and conditioning coach. A lot of things go contribute to a successful basketball team are things done off the court.

Thank goodness we didn't take a risk on Harris though. He was a bonehead at WV and is still living up to that title at MSU

I'm worried about in-state recruiting.

I never said anything personal and I never mentioned you by name or specifically... What I said was "a bunch of people argue that we should only recruit payers from the Midwest". So technically I didn't put words in your mouth, you put words in my mouth hahah That can't be argued because there are people who honestly believe that. None of my post was a personal attack or anything. Again I was saying anything about you, but about the logic of location and whatnot. Didnt mention you or anything so please don't do the same with me -

So a bunch of people argue that we should only recruit payers from the Midwest. April was a player from the Midwest, just happened to go play prep basketball for a year in Arizona and all of a sudden he isn't from the midwest. This is why this whole idea of "only recruit one area" is flawed. -

When contemplating this issue of instate recruiting I always like to think back to when I went and saw Bob Knight speak a few years ago and he said that one of his biggest regrets was not recruiting more nationally. He said he had assistants that wanted him to go to Florida, California, New York, etc and he never did. He said he regrets not doing that and only staying locally for so long. The reason kids don't understand the tradition of Indiana Basketball? A lot of high school kids now days have only seen a struggling IU program growing up. Im 24 and understand the tradition because my dad is a lifelong fan and I grew up hearing the stories and watching tapes of games, etc. Any random kid (even in Indiana) that grows up without an IU fan as a parent would have no idea of this because all they might know is Coach Knight throwing a chair across the floor, the lack of success by Mike Davis, the shady business of Kelvin Sampson, and the drama that has surrounded Crean's career here. That doesn't sound like success when looked at by up and coming high school kids. Doesn't matter where the kid is from, we haven't had long lasting success in decades so that is what keeps kids away -

Jeremiah April was from Illinois. He had been playing at a prep school in Arizona when we recruited him. -
OT: World University Games feat. Team USA/Kansas
bnkepner replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
No its not an international tour like we did. Yogi and Will played for the US team in the University games a few years ago. The US team got smashed and embarrassed and finished 9th or something. This year the NCAA decided to send an actual college team in place of organizing a team like they usually had, so they sent Kansas instead. There was a process to determine which team would go. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2014/06/17/kansas-becomes-team-usa-for-world-university-games/10696621/ -

Myles Turner did impress though. He has a really nice shot. Most of his points came off his jump shot so that is more impressive than if he just went out and dunked on everyone out there. Compare Turner to what Kaminsky has done in the summer league and its impressive. Watford still looks to be playing with no emotion. He has the skills to be an NBA rotational player but just doesn't look like he gives a crap out there really.

They both have been in the videos. Maybe not recently but I have definitely seen them in some of the videos and pictures from workouts. This particular workout could've clashed with a class or something. I don't think its anything to worry about

Now that thons off the board for this season

Im from logansport -
Well Turner and Kaminsky are also two very different players with different skill sets. Im happy with the pick but I don't think we will really see the true Turner for a few years. I think Kaminsky is less athletic but his shooting is the key. Kaminsky will be able to step into the starting lineup right away for Charlotte. Turner fits the pacers' needs more because he will be able to run the court and provide really good defense.
-
Hansbrough got all of his points of the fast break and the majority from free throws. Kaminsky was a 41% 3 point shooter last year (38% the year before) and then got 30% of his points in the post. A lot different. Bird said he picked Hansbrough because of his hustle and work ethic (which at the time the "gangsters" Pacers lacked).
-
Not even close to the same player. I get it, you don't like Kaminsky. Congrats
-
I wouldn't have been, the pacers have picked players that had a lot less upside over the years. But we'll see how Turner develops over the next few years.

I definitely agree. He seems to look too much for the big time ,"sportscenter" play instead of just playing the game. Im hoping he really brings it this year and plays smart -

Maybe you only know about the meth problem in indiana because you are here, but believe me its just as much a problem all across the midwest. Illinois, Ohio, and Iowa are among the states being taken over by this problem. A simple google search goes a long way on this topic. But this has nothing to do with the actual topic of this thread so I won't say anything more -

Troy has to be consistent this year to play that much. Last year he killed us too many times by disappearing in games. Usually if he had a good, consistent game the team played up to potential. Then there were games like the Purdue games and even the Witicha State game in the tourney where he completely disappeared and we looked like a mess. -

Except that Iowa also has a huge meth problem, all states, towns, etc have some sort of drug issue if you really want to look at it that way. I doubt players really care about the regional drug of choice or are really affected by it -

Hard to keep my years straight. Thanks -
Yeah I agree about Hawes, but Cody has not shown much ability to shoot the ball. He still only gets most of his points in transition. Charlotte isn't too high on him anymore and it shows because they were looking to unload him. Cody is a lot more atheltic than Kaminsky but can't shoot it like him at all. The jury is still out on Hawes. He had a great year before free agency last summer but had a terrible year with the Clips, shot very poorly, and found himself at the end of their bench even when they were desperate for shooting off the bench. I agree that it was a stretch to pick him at 9 but if he wasn't picked at 9 he would've easily gotten picked by the Heat at 10 or the Pacers at 11. Heck several teams were trying to move up into the lottery to select Kaminsky (Atlanta being one of those teams)
-
Big Al was their best player but McRoberts' shooting ability was the difference maker for their team in their run to the playoffs. Kaminsky is a better percentage shooter than McRoberts so I don't see how McRoberts has better perimeter skills but I guess we'll see this year.

The super regionals aren't part of the College World Series. Its like a play in series. Last year IU did make it to the CWS after beating FSU in the Super Regionals.
