Potential coaching change suggestions
bnkepner replied to Bryan Medema's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Ive had enough of Crean as well, but I still think he is probably here next year and all year the fan base will be having this type of discussion -
Yeah can we get back to Thomas Bryant? haha
-
Could be that he is only here to do a 1 year grad program though
-
If he graduates from grad school there isn't anything left to be invited back for
-
I don't see him going overseas. Mudiay went to China but showed how messed up the system is over there. He got injured, and immediately got cut from his team. They ended up bringing him back at the end of the year though but still didn't play a whole season
-
Yeah I added DJ to the mix but without those two, there was much of a team. Crawford and Bassett were good role good though. Id take them on this years team. Heck I'd love us to get a DJ White type player.
-
Sadly his story is one of hundreds of thousands. There are movies out there that pretty much show what he went through. Ive taken a lot of classes on this time period in Sudan and africa and its quite sad. We actually studied the Dinka people a lot. Thon Maker is a Dinka. Average height of most Dinka men is Thon's height hahah
-
Yeah EJ averaged 20 ppg and put up several 30 point games that year. We also had DJ that year and he averaged 17ppg. Basset averaged 11. Crawford averaged 9 and Ellis averaged 6. But in all reality we lived and died by Gordon that year. We did beat Kentucky bad that year but that was during Kentucky's stretch where they were terrible so thats kind of taken with a grain of salt. If we had a player of Gordon's caliber on this year's squad, this would be a completely different team. I had hope that Blackmon Jr would be that type of player, but haven't seen that yet.

His uncle set the whole thing up for Thon, Matur and their aunt to escape to Uganda, and they were later accepted into Australia as refugees. Thon was around 5 when they escaped
-
You are right but Zeller but if you compare that year of Creans to EJ's year at IU…Crean's team went further. I know it doesn't mean anything that he made it further but Sampson's offense was EJ and thats it. That team road on the back of EJ all year
-
You are right about Thon and Matur escaping the civil war and poverty of Sudan, but Ed Smith had nothing to do with it. Ed Smith didn't mean Thon till about 10 years later when Thon was 14
-
Thats why its useful to do some research before making assumptions. Not a dig on you but just a general statement
-
If Sampson wouldn't had had Eric Gordon, IU would've done nothing when he was the coach
-
Nothing typical about Thon Maker. The kid escaped a brutal civil war, his parents were left behind. Moved to a brand new country (Australia), learned a new language and learned a new sport (basketball). He transitioned over to the United States. He has faced more in his 17/18 years of life than many do after an entire life. The kid speaks multiple languages as well. Nothing typical about him at all.

Can We Keep Chuck Regardless Of Crean's Status?
bnkepner replied to Diadem's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Interesting because anytime Ive read an article about IU being at one of his games, Im pretty sure its been Crean , but Ive been wrong plenty of times haha. Im glad Chuck had that experience with the NBA cause that should help out a lot with kids like the Makers -
Im just curious if Crean will finally make some sort of adjustment after losses. In two years he hasn't so I won't hold my breath. No reason to make the NCAA tournament if we are just going to lose the first game
-
His offense was only better than Crean's because of EJ and DJ. Nothing else. If we had an EJ type player, everything would be the same.

Can We Keep Chuck Regardless Of Crean's Status?
bnkepner replied to Diadem's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I don't think Martin is the lead man on IU's recruitment of Maker though. Crean is. Of course Martin gave the Maker brothers the tour, but thats his job haha -
Its definitely not the minority. Its national news! Using Hanner and Hartman's injuries holds no water because Hanner hasn't been a factor all season no matter if he plays or not. We still finished in the lower part of the big ten and are on the bubble. We have lost 8 of the last 12. We still are losing the same way we lost games last year. Crean hasn't made any adjustments from the failures of last years squad. I don't think Crean is going anywhere this offseason but I also believe that there won't be any difference in next years team because Crean doesn't know how to make adjustments. If he couldnt win with the squad with Zeller and Oladipo, I don't see him winning with any other team. Tom Crean's success as a coach depends on have a superstar player. His major success at Marquette was when he had Wade controlling the offense and scoring. Last years team and this years team has only been successful when Yogi is successful. Tons of other teams have injuries, so that can't be an excuse. His time here is short. He peaked in Zeller's last year here.
-
If you look at the meltdown they had this year, its basically the same thing they did during the entire Big Ten season last year. Crean has never made any sort of adjustment to his defense, offense, sub patterns, game plan, etc. Calling for his firing is not a knee jerk reaction. Its a long time coming. If he could make some sort of adjustment in his game plan and execution, Id by more than willing to allow him to stick around. But two years of the same exact thing has gotten really old

Dakich referenced a few members from the committee and they do in fact take all that stuff into play. He said they would take today's loss to an MSU team without Dawson into mind as well. So we want to make the tournament so we can get beat out in the first round?? I don't understand. We have lost 4 straight in the same exact way with no signs of changes or adjustment. So we want to get into the tournament just to say we made the tournament?
-
When you compare the two styles, their offense was basically the same. I think they are super comparable. There isn't much difference to me
-
At this point i don't care if we lose players either. Start over with a new coach, new players, and a new culture of hustle, playing D, and heart.

Potential fallout from coaching change
bnkepner replied to HoosiersLoveBanners's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I don't care if we lose players, etc. I want a new coach. There are way more coaches out there that can have success with minimal talent. Crean has a ton of talent on his roster, and doesn't get success out of them -
Exactly what WayneFleekHoosier said. Bilas is WAY too pro Duke and pro "elite". Him and most of the commentators favor and defend Duke, UNC, Kentucky, etc no matter what they do.
