    They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

There are a lot of teams with a lot of transfers getting great NIL money and playing hard. IU's situation is about it's own terrible culture, not the current landscape of college sports.

I wouldn't mind Dolson having a cup of coffee with Utah St. or Vandy's coach. They won at lower-level DI and they didn't waste anytime winning where they're at now.

No one saw Oats either. That's why he landed at Alabama. Oats won't the last good mid-major coach to do well at the high major. IU won't hire any of those good coaches, but don't worry. They are out there.

It sounds like they are fine with letting this get uglier.

1.Being convicted isn't the point. 2. Th pictures of her injuries are gruesome. 3. Him beating his fiancée senseless isn't his only issue. He can't control his drinking, and I don't want IU in a Huggy Bear situation.

I've been curious about this too. Initially Brad gave a radio interview where he addressed it. He was soft spoken and kind. He said stuff like Indiana is a great place for basketball, I still have a lot of friends there, honored and humbled to be thought of so well back home, etc. It seemed to raise suspension that perhaps there was traction with our pursuit. Then not long after he delivers an in-person interview wherein he is much more definitive about his commitment to the C's, I'm a masshole, etc. Those two interviews were so close together in time but worlds a part in tone. Was he genuinely flattered and wanted to let IU down gently when speaking with Boston media the first time, but his pleasantries were misconstrued by Boston media as meaning he had real interest in the IU job? Thus is had to do a little better PR for the Bostonians to more definitively state he's committed to Boston?

For sure, Quinn had tremendous sway, but that sway could diminish this winter and spring as his time as president of the board concludes this spring. Also, the donors didn't give Woodson $6 million yesterday. That money was donated in March of last year. They've now had time to see that buying Woodson a really good roster wasn't the solution. All of this is to say I completely understand why we all are skeptical that IU will do the right thing, there are murmurs that suggest reasons for cautious optimism.

Everything is a negotiation. He can "retire" as season's end and IU can give him a "care package." That way he saves face, or so he'd think, and get the extra coin; and IU gets to move on. Woodson having and keeping the job isn't solely on Quinn. It's so much more involved than that. Also, the group that was fond of hiring him doesn't feel the same today.

Seemed like I heard on the TV a smattering of boos, just a few times. Is that accurate?

Ha ha ha. It's not about any expectations I have. I was just having a laugh that Trilly's list is the same names we've thrown around.

Trilly very often right, but had had a couple of notable misses with IU. Are we sure he didn't just pull the coaching list from BTown Banners to stir up a large and excitable fan base. Maybe there was more to his update, but that seems pretty basic. ; )

This is great. I totally only come here--multiple times a day--hoping against all reality that there'll be some insider news relaying how Scott and the big money donors have convinced Woodson to "retire" at the end of the season.

Exactly. I can't believe he fully buys into his own BS. He must thing we're all really gullible.

Interesting Do you know something? I don't have direct knowledge of the situation. I just imagine as a sign of respect for Woodson's past combined with his friendliness with BoT members and donors that even if they are really unhappy and want a change that they'd let him finish the season. If they thought firing Woodson could bring about a very successful season, then maybe. But I don't know that anyone thinks firing Woodson helps us this year, so they might as well save their buddy the shame. Plus, if they wanted him they are delusional, so they might be delusional enough to think he can turn this around.

Because of his history with the program and his important friends, I'd be surprised if IU let him go before the season ends. They may make agreements behind closed doors that this season will be his last or he can fake an illness or announce his "retirement" at the end of the season.

    Former IU player thread

It's not a great look for the current IU staff to see transfers playing well. Says something negative out the staff's ability to develop talent. I understand this is just a few games, but something to watch and consider as the season moves on.

I can remember when NC State hired Lowe, a former player and failed NBA coach, in 2006. I thought that was the epitome of desperation and no hope for the future. Oof.

Playing Leal is like playing with only 4 offensive players. Defense is absolutely abysmal. It's like the team is still not taught how other squads value the three point shot. Our slow recovery, unwillingness to disrupt a shot, not approaching with a hand up. Tough watch.

Went to a high school game tonight. One team played 4 out and the other 5 out. It was sloppy and lazy and fundamentals were severely lacking, but the general movement, decisiveness, and pace of both squads marked a real contrast with Woodson's "system." Really disappointing to see the game evolve at the high school level but not at IU.

To be fair, you have to in part by high school talent too. It's not like money is only in the portal. He didn't didn't just buy portal players, Ya recruited the transfer guards. They are here because of him and the money.

You said things like this before. If I could just listen to you and forget about a quarter century of IU mismanaging the program I could find contentment this season.

TJD wasn't going anyway else. The NBA didn't want him at that point and he wasn't going to make more money elsewhere. Sure, congrats on keeping TDJ, but the other options weren't great for him. Regarding Race, he seems like a nice person and I totally appreciate the effort he displayed on the court; however, IU would have been better served if Woodson didn't try to play them together. Race could have backed up TJD or transferred to Minnesota. Either would have been preferable to how Woodson rolled them out together. Race is a great example of the folly of Woodson--trying to make Race into something he wasn't foe wo years instead of adjusting to the modern game.
