Post Game Thread (Butler vs IU) Hoosiers Win
Magnanimous replied to Trish's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This kind of reminded me of the NC State game from 3 years ago, with Troy's performance hopefully being the coming out party we've been expecting like Vic his sophomore year @Purdue. Hopefully we can build some momentum off this win. -
Post Game Thread (Butler vs IU) Hoosiers Win

Remember when Hartman was being recruited people were saying he won't see many minutes, and we don't need him because he's just another Austin Etherington? -
Tevin has been named a first team All-American by USA Today and CBS Sports. The College Football Awards Show is tonight at 7 pm. While it is assumed Melvin Gordon will win the Doak, Tevin is a finalist, and should very well be named first team AA by the AP tonight as well.

I'm just gonna leave this right here

I realize that this is coming from a talking anus, but Kornheiser just said on PTI that if the Celtics don't turn things around, Stevens is going to up and leave and coach either the Hoosiers or Pacers. -
The Big10 won the ACC challenge by having better bottom feeders. Just about all of our top teams lost their matchups.
-
Outside of Wisconsin, the Big10 stinks this year. Even with our defensive and interior deficiences, if IU finishes lower than 6th I consider this season a failure. We have a tough start to the conference slate, but we can shoot and the conference lost a ton of the talent that was proping it up the last few years.

They were discussing his cognitive rehabilitation during the Louisville game.
-
Teams that can shoot and have strong backcourts are usually the ones who make runs in the NCAAT. I think we have enough to get in and piss a few schools off the first weekend.

Is it even a sure thing that DD is going to ever play again? I wish the kid the best, but it sounds like he has more to overcome than simply rehabing a knee injury.

NYC has a ton of Big10 alumni. Obviously with this announcement coming in the first year of Rutgers' and Maryland's membership there will be naysayers, but the Big10 is no longer merely a Midwest conference, something the traditionalists are going to have to stomach, as NYC, Philadelphia, and DC are now to some extent Big10 cities. Yea for many IU fans in particular, who viewed BTT games as home games, this is kind of a drag as you can't leave work early to catch an afternoon game in Indy, but it's about building the brand name, and you'd have to be living under a rock to be surprised by Delany making moves to increase exposure in the NYC area. Moves like these are almost procautionary to an extent, as with the CFP coming into being and more realignment likely to come, building brand name and claiming terrotory are crucial. The ACC has already scheduled two ACC tournaments in Brooklyn over the next few years.

I disagree. College basketball has so many fluff games and crappy tournaments played in empty Caribbean armories the first two months, that this could eventually push towards a shorter regular season. College basketball's start date has crept up noticeably the last few decades. Why not start conference play earlier as well? I think that this mentality coincides with the influence the CFB playoff is going to have on that sport, with less OOC games, more focus on the conference slate, and accomodating for the longer season and increasing amount of games the playoff will bring. As someone who thinks that conference tournaments are nothing but worthless cash grabs for any power conference other than the old Big East (as that one became a fun tradition), I also like that there will be a bigger gap between the BTT end and the NCAAT beginning. Particularly with Big 10 style of play, there's no need for these kids to beat the hell out of each other for four straight days and then expect them to just turn on the jets right away for a much more important tournament. Honestly, in NCAAT seasons, I usually find myself hoping that IU shows up for a part of the tournament to maintain some momentum, but ultimately ends up losing by the third round and avoids playing 2-3 unnecessary games right before the moment of the season every has been building up towards. It would be like a runner running a 10k the weekend before the Summer Olympic marathon event. Stupid all around.

Thanks Michigan. You just lost the Big10-Independent Challenge for us.

The nation's perspective on IUBB
Magnanimous replied to Never Daunted's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I'm not a fan of the Michigan comparison because Michigan is a big name flameout from the WWII era that has been good but not great since then. They have 1 co-national championship since 1948, and because they have a big stadium, classic helmets, and a great fight song they think they're a big time program. They're not. I could care less about all-time wins. They're a poor man's ND whose glory days were during the same time as Army's. If it wasn't for the money behind their program, they would have fallen off the CFB radar long ago. I know some of that might draw some paralels to us, but I think a better comparison may be Penn State football (minus the whole Sandusky scandal). Our history goes back farther than theirs (they don't have a Branch McCracken-esq era before Paterno), but there are a lot of similarities: - Glory days under the schools' best coaches were during the 70s and 80s, - Said coach had a good track record of upholding student-athlete standards that future coaches have tried to replicate - Both kept coaching longer than they should have and it hurt recruiting in the later years - Both our and their last NC came in the same school year (86/87 season) - Neither program has been able to escape the shadow of Knight/Paterno, who both left with controversial reasons - Both have been producing sporadic quality seasons over the last 20 years. - Despite all of this, attendance and fan support is tops in the nation In the grand scheme of things, we're historically a better basketball program than they are football (we're top 5-6 all-time, I'd put them around number ten), but the programs have been essentially mirrors of each other since the early 90s. I honestly don't like comparing college basketball programs to northern FB schools because IMO most of those programs are never truly coming back. The only one who has been remotely competitive since college sports blew up in the cable TV/internet era has been Ohio State, and even they have been a tier down from from the SEC/southwest schools the last decade (spare me 2012 ND, they didn't even belong on the same field as Alabama). I don't see Nebraska ever being what it once was, as not only are they now at a huge recruiting disadvantage, but they have failed miserably in adapting to today's style of play. Penn State has the facilities, brand name, and money to stay relevant under the right coach (as do Michigan and ND), and the CFB playoff does give these schools a better chance at contending now (especially when it expands to more teams), but I don't see any of them having repeat golden eras like the ones their fans are still expecting. Indiana on the other hand is located in the college basketball hotbed of the country. Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan are all within 5 hour drives (as are Purdue, Butler, and Illinois). Indianapolis and Chicago are prime recruiting grounds. And with basketball, you only really need a few good recruits to hit it big, as with football you need several successful classes of 20+ players in a row to even be competitive, let alone contending. The right coach will turn this program around in no time. -
Why Tevin Coleman deserves every award Melvin Gordon wins
Magnanimous posted a topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
1) Melvin Gordon was shut down by Western Illinois (a 1-AA school). He ran for 38 yards on 17 carries. Tevin Coleman's worst game was against Penn State (the number one nationally ranked rushing defense), which was for 71 yards. Both runners only had one game under 100 yards. 2) Gordon has played in the Big 10 division with the weaker defenses. Penn State, Michigan St, and Michigan are all ranked top 12 nationally in run defense. Gordon hasn't played any of them. The highest ranked rush defense Gordon played was LSU who is ranked 56th. Coleman played against three top 12 teams, and Missouri who is 22nd. 3) Among common opponents (Bowling Green, Maryland, Rutgers, and Iowa [Purdue is tomorrow for Indiana]), Gordon ran for 703 yards. Coleman has run for 838 yards. 4) Both play on abysmal passing teams (ranked 120 and 121 respectively), but since Sudfeld got hurt against Iowa, Indiana's passing game has gone for 79 ypg. Since that same game, Wisconsin has averaged 128 passing ypg. Coleman has been facing a loaded box on every down with a worse passing game for the second half of the season. 5) As talented as Gordon appears, Wisconsin has yet to prove they are anything other than a RB system that anyone can produce big numbers in. Giving the Doak Walker award to Gordon would be like giving the Davey O'Brien award to a Mike Leach QB. 6) Coleman has had seven games averaging at least 7 ypc. Gordon has had five. -
The holes in this roster are baffling
Magnanimous replied to Magnanimous's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Lyles decommitted two years ago, so it's not like Crean didn't have time to fill that hole. Vonleh was a known OAD and Zeller was doubtful for four years. The only one who anyone could say screwed Crean over was Fischer, but even if he had stayed, we'd have one center on this team with none coming in next year. Once (probable) quality center who would be a four year player over 8 recruiting classes is pathetic. Meanwhile we have four year wing players in every class. Again, who is going to play point once Yogi leaves? -
So who's going to be the new Coach next year?

If Penn State could steal Cael Sanderson from ISU, it would at least be worth a shot. -

These are the games we were blowing last year. This has remnants of Penn State written all over it with this deflated attitude down the stretch. -
Looks like we'll have our first 2,000 yard rusher in school history
Magnanimous replied to Magnanimous's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Yea that kind of sealed the deal on it. Since the CCG and bowl game count these days towards stats, Gordon will most likely finish 500+ yards ahead of Tevin, but it was much closer than that. -

Tevin is now sitting at 1,906 yards with one game left against Purdue. Kid has been nothing short of a privilege to watch this year run the ball, especially against a stacked box once Sudfeld went down. -
Mallory couldn't even teach his defense to tackle. Knorr has done a fairly decent job of developing our front seven and teaching these guys to fill gaps.

A basketball coach who makes $5.2 million a year took his players out to lunch. Who cares? This post makes our fanbase look petty. -

Probably as strange as the fact we put a million dollar football hire in McNutt instead of a hotel. -

Nate has a lot of natural talent, but there isn't anything special about him. He is very methodical in how he plays QB. -
Penn State was not happy about the low blocking they experienced last Saturday, particularly the hit on Mike Hull. This is bringing up memories for them of the Deangelo Roberts hit on Michael Mauti that ended his college career. I realize that Penn State fans in general think the world is out to get them, but is IU developing a pattern here? Story in their college newspaper
