Tom Crean Update from Fred Glass

This probably doesn't mean much since I live in DC and am one of the poor $100 donors, but IUBB will not be receiving another cent from me until Crean is gone. -
Tom Crean to Alabama Rumor Thread
Magnanimous replied to birdy_19's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
This is all a big ploy between the Crimson schools. Alabama wants Crean and we want Marshall. Alabama knows Marshall doesn't want to go there, so they're trying to hurry us up in canning Crean. Likewise, Oklahoma is giving us Bob Stoops once Kevin Wilson gets enough of Stoop's system players on the roster as a thank you for taking Sampson off their hands. -

IU is the only AAU school to currently not have an engineering program. This is a great move by the university to address the school's most pressing need. It's going to start as a bachelors and doctorate program, with a masters to follow. What was the reason for why this never happened? Wasn't there some outdated funding allotment law or whatever based on school type, plus pressure to keep things the way they have been in the Indiana state legislature?

2010 vs 2011 recruiting classes - Which killed us more?
Magnanimous posted a topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I know....this may seem ridiculous since these two classes produced two lotto picks (and two of the best players in school history) and a serviceable four-year role player, but IMO the roster deficiencies that have been plaguing the program can be pinpointed at these two classes. Case for each: 2010 - No big men, no PGs, no shooters 2011 - No player remained for more than two years (AE barely counts as three) I know that we were tight for spaces due to taking huge 2008 and 2009 classes, but which of these two do you think actually hurt us more? -
IU Basketball is IU culture
Magnanimous replied to theriverpilot's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It's nice to hear but I actually prefer the opposite. I remember when I was taking my college visits 10 years ago, Penn State wouldn't shut up about "We are Penn State." I didn't learn one thing about the school from being there. It felt like it was a tour and presentation about how if you join us you'll be better, and the whole thing revolved around the football program. I know people ragged on them post-Sandusky for having this mentality, but it did really feel a little "cult-ish," especially reflecting on it. IU on the other hand really gave me a good idea of the school, campus, student life, and how it would personally better me for coming to Bloomington. As much as I love IU basketball, I'm proud to say that there were a million things IU related that meant more to me as a student than the basketball team. Hopefully your son feels the same way when he graduates. -
I bet you raise your hand in class when the teacher is about to let everyone out early.

Get real. There is zero difference between this team and Maryland. One is currently a top 10 team and the other can't even make a field of 68.

Potential fallout from coaching change
Magnanimous replied to HoosiersLoveBanners's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Anyone else hearing that Crean is initiating talks to step down soon after the season? -
We've all got them. For me it's the fact that Tom Pritchard is the only center Crean has brought in that has stayed beyond two seasons. What things have stood out to you? (even with all the criticism, he still deserves a pass for the first two years though, so keep that in mind if you mention anything statisically based)

In regards to Glass himself, he's done a lot of positives for IU's athletic programs. Baseball is self-explanatory. Soccer won a NC. Though the results have yet to matriculate, he has made more of a commitment to IU's football program than any AD in a long time. The financial problems IU's AD had been facing when he took over are resolved as well. However, IU is basketball first, and whoever is AD needs to bring results there above all else. I would like to see Glass stay (I think he's learned his lesson from the Crean buyout), and he is very personable, which is an underrated attribute when handling coach egos. The way I see it, if he handles this Crean situation the way it should be handled in the next few weeks, he can stay, but if can't get rid of Crean then he needs to be replaced with someone who will.

Wilson has built the entire football team essentially from scratch. This team resembles an actual football team moreso than any team IU has put together in the last 20 years. That might not be saying much, but in its current state it's a matter of time before things start to click in IU's favor. The football team has improved every season under Wilson, and they're still incredibly young. Yes, last year turned into a dissapointment after Nate went down, but the win @Mizzou showed what they were capable of. I expect a bowl game this season, but Wilson deserves 2-3 more years IMO. Worst case scenario, he leaves the cupboard incredibly full for the next coach. As long as we have an actual quarterback, the offense will take care of itself. It's not Wilson's fault both his backups transferred, one after the roster was set. The defense did improve under Knorr. There were obviously still issues, but technique, filling gaps, aggressiveness, etc were all much improved this year with most of the same talent from two years ago. Our defense actually kept us in a few games this year as well (notably Missouri, Ohio State, and Penn State). Last year's team was a bowl quality team that fell short, but the program itself is still trending upward, and it would be incredibly short-sighted to pull the plug on that.

You do realize this is the same program that fired one of the greatest coaches of all-time in September right? -

The Celtics are going to suck for a handful of years to come. Unfortunately, in the Eastern Conference, that could mean finishing as high as 6th and making the playoffs. It all depends on what he wants right now. Does he want to coach at the highest level for one of the premier baseketball organizations in a great city for the long haul, but not have much control over his roster, even if it means not contending for a while, if ever, or does he want to return to the college game, deal with recruiting and selling the program, but have a greater level of control over his team? I feel like when/if he returns to college, it will be for the long haul, so he may not feel like he needs to make such a commitment yet. Stevens holds all the power in this, because not only does he know we're becoming desperate for him, but he doesn't have to come here anytime soon. Unless he completely forgets how to coach or gets involved in a huge scandal (both unlikely given his nature), the door will always be open for him at Indiana. Brad Stevens may very well end up coaching at IU, but he's young enough that it may not happen for another 20 years. -

Potential coaching change suggestions
Magnanimous replied to Bryan Medema's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I agree, but he is a guy whose name is starting to get mentioned. We all know what Indiana is capable of. I want a hire that will compliment our resources and make everyone else go "Oh s***...." when reading the hiring headline. OSU, Michigan, and Alabama's most recent football HC hires elicted such reactions. -

I think some of these questions may be answered by the end of the NCAAT -
Potential coaching change suggestions

Another name starting to get thrown around as a possible candidate. I haven't watched UNI play since they beat Kansas five years ago. Going by KenPom, he has fielded some pretty strong defensive teams during his tenure at Northern Iowa, but has been inconsistent in doing so. This will be his first year in the NCAAT in four seasons. Is this guy's coaching style legit enough to work here, or is he just another name being thrown around? -

I don't think Shaka's a good fit. He's a great coach, but his style of coaching is much better suited for mid-major basketball. -

Stevens was a mid-major coach. John Calipari was a mid-major coach before going to UK. I want someone who knows basketball and can handle big boy shoes. Doesn't matter where he comes from. -

If Darth Vader can redeem himself, then this program can bounce back too. Unfortunately we'll need to get all of our limbs cut off and set on fire before things turn around.
