It’s amazing how hitting just a few more 3s would totally change the outlook for this team and program. -

OSU is terrible and we are worse. -

I keep forgetting there is a game tonight, lol. -
Agree 100%

and im not saying we should have kept Crean....just saying, Crean had the ability to have elite stretches as he did with Marquette and a couple years with IU. Too many lean years though imo.
-
Honestly, if we had held onto Crean for 20 years like Baylor did....wouldn't be surprised if his career had ended up looking similar- majority of years are mid, some are bad and some are very good, even a title after 15 years.

Agree 100%.

What makes it more dicey is that there would seem to be several candidates that will have potentially other good jobs opening up after this year: Louisville, tOSU(?), Michigan?
-
that would be a soul-crushing scenario.....

Schertz record as a college basketball coach: 390-105 (.788) Dude has won almost 400 games and he's only 48y old. lol. I'll take a chance with that guy over anyone who has had middling success at a P5 school.
-
Schertz had a run at a DII school that has few equals even in D1. And it looks like he is about to take Indiana State to a conference title and a tourney bid. That's pretty good.
-
Yes, a little bit. Pat Chambers won 26 games at PSU once, too. Shrews hasn't stayed the head coach anywhere long enough to establish a winning program, so I think it's fair to question that. A lot of ppl were assistants under great coaches.
-
337–69 at a DII school to me is more impressive than 57-32 in P5 to me.
-
I'm surpised by this analysis. Shrews is by far the least proven of the 3 that were mentioned: a losing record in 3 years at IU Southbend, barely above .500 in 2 years at PSU and currently has a 7-15 record at ND. That's a poor resume. May has a better resume. Schertz has an amazing resume.

It is astounding that one former player from 50 years ago is bigger and more important than an entire university and the millions of other alums and fans.

2023-24 Prediction League - Game 23 at Ohio St Tue 2/6/24 7pm Peacock

OSU has superior guards.....and even if IU has some kind of bounce-back mentality, you aren't going to take a smaller, weaker, less skilled backcourt on the road and win. OSU - 75 IU - 65 -
Pearl would have been a good get about 5-6 years ago. He is too old to start someting meaningful imo. Beard can coach but the IU brass would never consider him for his baggage. Few, Drew, Lloyd- these guys wouldn't jump ship to come here imo. Stevens- you keep offering even if it won't happen Alford- Not my first pick but he would do better than Crean, Woody, CAM....I wouldn't be heartbroken if we hired him, but I don't think IU would consider him either imo.

Schertz>May Here's what I like about Schertz: he's a survivor, he has guts and he's hungry. He ran Bill Self's offense for a few years and killed it and then changed it to a more pro style 5 out offense and killed it even more. The guy has personal stories that I bet a lot of young guys can connect with, and the guy can apparently coach his butt off. And he is currently coaching in the state of Indiana. He has Florida roots so not sure IU has any pull with him personally, but I think if you are going to go with a midmajor guy, he is the one to get.
-
IU now doesn't look like it is positioning itself to be a tourney team next year. It's possible but you know pretty well that a dozen other established programs are going dancing next year. Would you rather probably go dancing and be on TV and get all that exposure or would you rather take a chance and go to IU.

I don't think Woodson has much to sell other than NIL. He clearly isn't better at sending guys to the NBA than anyone else. He didn't have a choice but to play JHS and rely on him last year. JHS got himself into the league, with a little help from TJD in those pick n rolls. If you are an elite guard, why pick Woodson over Calipari or Pearl or a dozen other programs? No reason to gamble on Woodson and IU if you can go play at Tennessee or Auburn or UK or UNC or almost anywhere else and probably make the NCAA tourney and get NIL.
-
I think if IU loses the rest of their games or wins just one more, then he gets canned. I think it's more likely that they win another 3-4 games somehow, and he stays for another year. He gets let go or "retires" after next year unless they make a miraculous run to the FF (which won't happen ofc).
-
Woodson scared away Fife and Matta- which wasn’t a good sign. That left us with the only one of the 3 that couldn’t coach basketball. IU should fire him asap but they won’t. My head says IU won’t fire him for at least another year, probably 2. But then again, can you imagine Woody actually showing up for the next 40 post game conferences knowing he is gonna say the same dumb crap and be criticized? I think there’s a world where he actually just walks away.

IU has become an NBA prep camp. The players now get NIL bc they said it’s unfair for them to do all this stuff and enrich the NCAA and the schools. Now, the fans are being used and everyone else is getting paid bc they think we are fools. If IU screws up the next hire, I might actually stop caring. -

But seriously….it is depressing to think that we have to sit through another year of Woodson being the coach knowing that he can’t coach this program to any actual success.
