IUBB vs Michigan - 01/23/22 @ 3:30 on CBS
Adillac replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Agree that sometimes you just get beat and you play bad or the other team plays amazing. I just don't think 18pt losses at home to anyone other than 2011 UK team should be brushed off as almost expected. Maybe I expect too much of this team, and that's probably true. -

Win against #4 Purdue: gutsy, hard-nosed, well-deserved, showing our potential. 18 pt loss to Michigan: these things happen.. ok. -

Can you imagine IU going on the road and beating Michigan? Me neither. -

shot clock violation wasn't even close. The refs are Helen Keller perceptive tonight. -

There isn't a guard in the country that can't blow by Parker.. -

Amazing we haven't recruited a single guard in the last 6 years who can 1) handle the ball well and 2) shoot consistently from deep. This game is over, obviously. Such a bummer to get a great gutsy win against Purdue and then just crap the bed tonight. -
Mike Woodson to be next IUBB coach. Thad Matta to be associate AD
Adillac replied to iubb's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
First feeling when I heard the news: ugh. seriously? Mulled it over for awhile and after hearing that Matta was going to be a part of this....I began to feel quite positive about it. Ok, so Indiana isn't a job that the Celtics coach wants...fine. I get it. And to be fair, why would any established young(ish) coach in the NCAA jump ship to come here? Money is all about the same at all the big state schools anyway. Indiana is either going to be a big jump in pay and presitge (Archie/Crean) or its going to be a somewhat sideways move with more pressure and less job security (Beard/Mussleman/Drew/etc). Reasons I like the Woodson/Matta hire: 1. Mike is an Indiana guy. It will matter imo. It will make Mike feel like he owns the job. It's his (and our) house. He doesn't have to act like he wants to be in Hoosier country. He belongs here. That will translate to the players imo. 2. NBA experience. Doesn't matter if the players didn't watch him play growing up. Not many people in basketball are hired as a head coach in the NBA. You can poo poo his coaching record, fine. I don't think its a negative. It is only a positive. 3. He will bring accountability and a real mentor leader quality. You don't play under Knight and flourish as a player and then become a coach without taking some of that with you. 4. He seems affable and engaging. Archie was NOT. Crean was somewhat but he was a little manic and squirrely. Woodson seems calm, experienced, likeable. 5. Matta: Indiana is SUCH a dead place that they got a former Knicks headcoach and one of the most successful B1G coaches in history to come run the basketball program together. lol. The Matta connection might pay dividends in ways we cannot know right now. I think it could be significant. But maybe not? Who knows.. I wanted Stevens. We all did. I kinda wanted Beard. Woodson is a bit older, but I think a lot can be accomplished in 4-5-6 years. This is probably phase 1 of a bigger plan too. Bring in Michael Lewis, or Fife, or Cheaney as assistant coaches? ...the transition to the next coach could just be in-house. I'm glad we didn't get Moser or Musselman, or Drew. Would have been ok with Beard or even the guy from Alabama. We have an IU guy. I'm not upset. -
Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

If we got out outbid that’s pathetic for everyone involved: IU didn’t have the desire or ability to actually pay for top talent, for Brad is really was just about the money, and Boston had to raise Brad’s salary less than a year after an extension because a college came calling. lol. -

Come on Brad, do the logical thing here: quit a legendary nba job mid season and move to the middle of nowhere. -

It makes too much sense for Stevens to come home. That’s basically my opinion still. I still think it’s going to happen. -

On point #1: guess we should explain to Celtics fans that Brad is doing a fine job. Cause a lot of them don’t seem to think so. On point #2: I’m sure Boston is wonderful. I hope that isn’t a criteria. -

God almighty, why would you want to stay in Boston after 8 years? I understand wanting to take the job initially because it’s a legendary job. But, after 8 years of mediocre/decent results and no pipeline to success on the horizon- why would you want to stay in that town? Especially if you are offered twice as much money and will likely have immense success here? I have no info but I still think it’s gonna happen. -

If the info we are getting is that this convo between IU and Stevens has been going on for a couple months, then the donors forking over two huge bags of cash for the buyout and the transition suggest to me that this could in fact be almost a done deal. Nobody is giving away 10million dollars for a chance to land Scott Drew or John Beilein. -

I have no info. But I just think it’s going to happen. consider some things we are basically sure of: - He will make more money at IU -He loves IU, considers it a great job. -Not going to win in Boston anytime soon -Boston is not still in love with him. What would be the reason to say No to Indiana? He just doesn’t want to deal with moving? One of the biggest things that could be true would be he doesn’t want to do the college gig again- recruiting, kissing babies, etc...but we don’t know that’s how he feels. I don’t know, it just seems like it’s a good fit and it’s a good time for it. -

I would be unhappy if we got Beilein or Drew. if it were Stevens I would be obviously very happy. And I’d be okay with Beard. And I’d be reasonably happy with Marta. I know I’m not in the majority with this one but I would be okay if it somehow were Alford, even though I know IU isn’t interested in that direction. My hopes: 1. Stevens 2. Beard 3. Alford 4. Matta if we can’t get anyone of those, we should just give it to Fife or Cheaney. -

Given the 10mil buyout and big money promised for the “transition”, in my opinion that doesn’t mean anybody but Beard or Stevens. Who would risk tens of millions of dollars just to try out Musselman or Fife or Drew or anyone else? Nah, it smells like it’s Beard or Stevens.
