In 2015-16 Yogi as a Senior Blackmon/johnson as a soph. WIth Stan being a Junior. Williams as a junior. If all improve, we can be a scary team with a decent big man and power forward.

Should we stop recruiting five star centers?
Banksyrules replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Others in this topic have provided the good counter argument for me to tweak the idea. I still feel it holds water to a degree. I just disagree with your points because I feel you are too busy fighting a so called argument then breaking down the idea and see the specific (not general)of why it would be a bad idea. Thanks to these posters other then you, I realize we should still try to recruit five star centers, but to a certain basic degree where we don't lose out on great fundamentally sound big men who help our stud guards and small forwards flourish. -

Because it's not a argument but an idea. When you present ideas it's important to go back and forth to discuss the possibilities and when things don't work you reframe them to make the idea better sound. I presented the original idea. Realize it has some flaws and changed things up a bit. You need people to break down the idea but I'm presenting arguments to counteract it. The original idea is just that and original idea. Nothing is difinitive, you can't just state something and expect it to be perfect from the get go. You redraft it, try to make it better. You adjust. Normally in other jobs you have fellow employees who do this before stuff goes to the general public. With IU basketball, I come to a board to discuss ideas, which I'm slowly realizing is a big mistake. I tried to present an idea that maybe Coach Crean could utilize to make his teams better. If it doesn't work so be it. Relax buddy, I think I've slowly decided that I'll only comment on other posts and keep my ideas to myself. -

"Should" merely asks the question it doesn't relay intent. Anywho, I've got a lot of work to do so I'll leave it at that. -

Fair enough. I've got yard work to do but I try to look at everything by a case by case example. I feel that Vonleh and Cody would have made it on their own merits. It's not a fact but it's just my opinion. However, I feel that Coach Crean contributed to Oladipo's success as well. -

I never said give up. I just think our resources are better spent in different areas. I personally don't see us getting one of the top centers in the top twenty in the class. You can't be everywhere at once. I just think if we gave the top 25-100 centers in each class the proper attention a five star athlete would we would be raking them in and creating a great TEAM. Just my opinion. -

Fair enough Hwy 1. I'm not opposed of getting the five star centers, but as of right now I think it might be a little more difficult then before. -

That's true, but at least it opens the door for more debate without an absolute statement. -

I guess the base of the argument is to ask how much focus we should put towards the five star centers as opposed to getting those five star guards which we all know could thrive under Coach Crean. I'm all for looking at interest of an elite big man but not to point were resources could be better used to secure a five star guard. I guess it's a balance. -

To you it's flawed and I respect that. But it's not definitively flawed when others (from posts above) don't think so. Granted every idea needs a few tweeks but to just claim something is definitively flawed, closes the door to find new avenues for success. Just my opinion. -

But how much better have they become? One could easily argue that Zeller and Vonleh already inherited their basketball skills that propelled them to the draft. Calipari has a bunch of one and done's but I don't think he developed them at all. However, he uses the power of money to get them. Still they did well in the lottery. Cousins is my example, great talent but if developed correctly he could have been a lot better in the pros. I personally think Zeller and Vonleh improved a little but if I was being honest with myself I could see how they might develop better under different circumstances. Plus until the last six months of High School, Zeller wasn't ranked in the top twenty if memory serves me right. Plus it kind of hurts us that Vonleh gave us some verbal jabs before he left. Other teams will use those quotes directly to downplay us. -

I just think with Crean's system I think a lot of other teams are going to attack us by mentioning to elite big men that under our Coach's system they will not thrive and become better. If you honestly think we are going to get Stephen Zimmerman or a Diamond Stone then yes ignore what I just said ( and I hope we do get them), but if we can get those kids (top26-100 in each class) centers who help contribute and actually help our guards and small forwards thrive, I wouldn't be opposed to it. -

Are you telling me the state of Indiana can't produce big men who are fundamentally sound? I just gave you one example of many. Coach Crean just got one Luke, but there is no reason he can't get 2 or 3 big men who have great rebounding skills who provide great defense. There are plenty of them out there. I'm talking about kids who have more of a skill set then Hanner or Peter. Hargondy was never a project, he just had great fundamentals. It would probably not be advantageous of you to always bring up the worst case example when presenting your argument each time. There are kids who have better skill sets then Peter and Hanner but who are not elite. -

I never said anything about projects. I just said five star centers. I'm talking about the centers who are part of the top 25 recruits for each class. There are plenty of guys (like Luke before he transferred ) who are fundamentally sound who can contribute. Plus if a five star big wants to play for us, of course you don't turn it down. For the sake of time management and resource allocation I think Coach Crean would be best served to focus on getting the best players in the 1- 3 slots, while getting good rebounders or shot blockers who can help maximize the strengths of our guards and small forwards. Example. Remember Luke Hargondy (Spelling) from Notre Dame, he was not well known but played great minutes for the Irish. With our guards we have coming in now, he would thrived in our system. -

Well this is rude, without any substance. I'm just trying to offer one perspective on how I think Coach Crean can help his future teams get better. That's why I'm asking for opinions. I'm not saying it's definitive just throwing out an idea and asking what my fellow Hoosiers think. There are plenty of teams who have done well in the tournament without an elite center to carry the load. I just think if we focus our resources on getting the one or two guys who think will provide stability then flash we can create great teams. If we keep waiting for all those five stars to make their decisions, I would hate to lose out on good big men who accepted other offers. I think Coach Crean can easily recruit elite men for 1-3 spots to create formidable teams. Not everybody in the starting five has to be elite, just fundamentally sound. -

For the record I don't believe it myself, but I feel this is the argument other teams will use against us. -

How many open spots does michigan state have. Sheesh. -
From what I've heard from my friends in Virginia is that he also has that clutch gene. He's not afraid to make the game winning shot.

You might be right on that. Still, I don't think you can blame it on Coach Johnson. -

He's a very good assistant. Good coaches have great assistants and are very hard to come by. Everyone saw what happened when Crean got that assistant from Duke (I forget the name)and messed us up with certain recruits (Irving, though now I'm getting the vibe that he's a big cry baby). The high school Coaches and players love Coach Johnson and he cuts through a lot of bull so we can have access to talk to theses kids. Very hard to find people like that. -

Kenny is a great assistant. The kids love that guy. If he leaves, to me that marks the beginning of the end of the Coach Crean era. I don't think Coach Crean will be able recruit another assistant to Johnson's level because many will view him as a sitting duck. Just MHO. -
