What is your favorite thing about IU?

Haha, yea I've done my fair share of camps in dorms. Definitely not ideal but to me its just part of the college experience. Basically... I'll be happy when I can live in a house of my own.    Maybe some day we will catch up in person on campus. Doing sports broadcasting I'd imagine you'll spend some time around student radio and thats an activity I actually am really interested in getting involved with.

What is your favorite thing about IU?

Oh, why not? I guess living in the dorms is annoying from an RAs perspective but it would be cool to meet people easily. Living off campus def is cool though and I hope I can do that starting sophomore or junior year

What is your favorite thing about IU?

Not positive yet. I applied to the Kelley living learning center, I'm really hoping for somewhere in northwest (Mcnutt is def my preference) What is your opinion of best dorms/neighborhoods?    By the way, couldn't help but notice your founder tag. Props on starting such an awesome site, if I can ever be of assistance let me know I'd definitely be up for modding/writing articles or anything. Can't understate how much I appreciate an easy to navigate and stimulating community for IU.   Oh cool, sorry to make a repeat of the thread   :(  I'll def be checking that out though haha, thanks for mentioning it

    5th Year Transfers

True, he won't get the media exposure. But the word from a former NBA executive is IMO more valuable than media attention.    Lee really can't go wrong here with these choices.

OT: Bruce Pearl being Bruce Pearl

I understand UT and IU were in different spots, IU being much worse, but it shouldn't be understated just how bad UT was   EDIT: I don't think Pearl is an elite coach by any means. Just very good.
  10. Cool, how do you guys think this class fills out? Who else hops on board?

OT: Bruce Pearl being Bruce Pearl

I won't go on a war path for Bruce Pearl, but look at the program he took over. For arguments sake, when Tom Crean got Indiana for the first three years they were losing seasons (that was expected of course, with the state of the program he took over). Pearl took over Tennessee that had not been to the tourney in 5 years and the season he was hired took them to six straight tournaments.    He got TENNESSEE, a football school with no basketball tradition, up to 4th in national attendance in his first year. An increase of 7,436 per game. He took them to their first regular season championship in 8 years and the first number one ranking for the program. He got a complete bottom-dweller program up to #1 in the country.    I think you may underestimate how hard it is to be above .500   I think hes a great hire for a school like Auburn...   But I won't argue the topic. To each his own

    IU Fans sabotaging the coach

I have two points to make that may turn pretty long-winded, so please stick with me if youre so inclined...   1) With the constant bickering going on the board these days and since a mod has confirmed that recruits do come here, maybe it would be best if there was a section to the site that is "members only" or "invite only" I used to be on a message board for Notre Dame and they had similar constant arguing (I'm not sure if any of you follow ND football, but last year was a disaster). This eventually was addressed by the formation of groups that one member would create then invite like-minded posters. In these groups complaints about the coach, critical observations about players and recruits occurred. But, because they were in private, the people who hate the complaining did not have to see them and those posting the complaints did not have to worry about recruits/their families ever seeing them.    I still think its ridiculous that fans should have to police their own thoughts before posting on a forum for fans (I understand the need to mod and remove ridiculous/trollish posts, but negative posts should be allowed without consequence).   The private groups ranged from anything as silly as "The Gentleman's Club" where posters put up pictures of Kate Upton, to University functioning such as ticket sales and marketing schemes. I think it was a good solution, not sure how plausible it is to create as I am not well versed on the tech side of things. Additionally, it may hurt the posting numbers on the main board because people would be more inclined to post where their opinion will be shared. This may turn the main board into more debate, not necessarily a bad thing. The existence of these groups did not change the main board on the Notre Dame site.   I think it would be cool to have something similar here, so people can have light-hearted humor, talk about University happenings, maybe one for Indiana students/alumni, etc. Just an idea   2) Twitter is a scary, scary tool in recruiting. Honestly, its probably one of the worst things to happen to college compliance departments. People are impossible to control and despite efforts by universities/coaches people will always tweet recruits. Sometimes it will be positive, sometimes it will be negative. It is a secondary violation no matter what and negative tweeting really just casts the entire school in a poor light. I have never, nor will I ever, tweet a recruit. If its something positive, is it really going to make a difference? Maybe it puts a happy thought about your school in the recruit's head for 5 seconds. If its negative, it leaves a bad taste in the kids mouth.    Having followed Notre Dame I can confidently say EVERY fan base has crazy people who will tweet negative things. Some accounts just constantly bombard recruits, which can get annoying and creepy.    At the end of the day, fans should have faith in their coach to relay necessary information to recruits. If you don't have that confidence in your staff, thats a problem.   Essentially, IMO twitter does far more harm than good.    Just my .02

    IU Fans sabotaging the coach

I only caught the tail end of the season, so I have a lot of catching up to do on the roster. I agree though that its important to get a balanced roster. I'm hoping Crean addresses some of that to the close of this cycle and in the 2015 class. Theres no way Indiana should miss the tournament, little lone the NIT. But no use crying over spilled milk... at this point I'm just behind coach Crean and hoping he gets us where we want to be.   No denying his seat should be getting hot and with a similar performance next year be on flaming. Thats not always a bad thing; sometimes pressure is good.      Great post. This is pretty much where I'm at

If we get to two years from now and theres a clear, better option available and we haven't shown significant progress, I'm all for a change. We have to keep the program moving forward. I just wouldn't fire him if he gets us to a sweet 16 next year, but if we don't progress past that the next year, I would be all for a change.    We may never know, but I certainly won't lose sleep over it until we do and I certainly won't from this article.   I sincerely thank you for posting though, it makes the board interesting. All contributions are awesome! Love the food for thought.
  15. Butler made the list and not us?  :scratchhead:   Hope we can fill out the class how coach Crean wants!

Fair enough on the expression of frustration   But I submit to you, does every fan base not have intense fans? There will be negative or pessimistic people in every fan base. Because there are negative and pessimistic people everywhere. Its a sad fact of life.    If recruits prefer to view criticism on message boards where they will never meet the posters as a bad culture around the program instead of having a passionate fan base, well, I'm not sure what to say to that. Personally I would prefer they judge the culture of the program based on: atmosphere of the locker room/relationships of players with their coaches/students at the university... IE people they will eventually see and interact with in real life.    I just don't think that "highly touted 2015 recruit" should drop Indiana based on fans being, well... fanatics

    IU Fans sabotaging the coach

I'm sorry am I not allowed to express frustration over a year INDIANA basketball misses the NIT? At the end of the day it comes back to the coach, this year, Crean could have done better. That doesn't mean I want him fired. My opinion is allowed to change.    And yes, I will firmly say I don't think a kid that bases his decision on message board commentary is a kid worth having at IU.

Yea, contacting recruits should be a big no-no.    Hwy 1 and Rayl, I like both of your posts a lot. They're always thought provoking and entertaining... But if you two have a "beef" I think the mods would prefer you do it privately and not in a thread.   But what do I know, I just joined.

    IU Fans sabotaging the coach

Any kid thats going to stay away from IU because they don't like what they see on a message board is too mentally fragile to get this team where we want it to be anyway.    I think Crean is a good coach and he definitely has forgotten more about basketball than I will ever know. I think he deserves probably two more years at minimum if he can get us back to sweet 16s. But if you can't talk about the future of your program (with or without their coach, which plays a big role in the program) on a message board for IU fans, where else are you supposed to do it?    "The negativity about Crean is causing some of Indiana's best high school players to flee to places like Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State. No one has been a greater benefactor from IU's civil war than Ohio State Coach Thad Matta and Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo. Ironic, isn't it?"   This writer is full of it. Does he have anything to back this up? He doesn't support his statements in his article with statistics.    I fully support Coach Crean and hope he gets the team back where it should be. But after missing the NCAA and NIT theres going to be some upset fans. Shouldn't recruits want fans who are mad about missing the tournament??   I predict this thread gets locked soon

Not having one losing season in all those years of coaching is a BIG accomplishment. The man is a great coach. Was Tennessee basketball ever worth anything before Pearl got there?

    non-conference schedule going forward

:scratchhead: Well... oops. Thought they were still in the ACC. Better sub out Georgia Tech then I guess. Haha
  23. KelleyHoosh

    non-conference schedule going forward

Next year our schedule is:      Aug 30 vs Indiana State Sept 6 BYE Sept 13 @ Bowling Green Sept 20 @ Missouri Sept 27 vs Maryland  Oct 4 vs North Texas Oct 11 @ Iowa Oct 18 vs Michigan State Oct 25 BYE Nov 1 @ Michigan  Nov 8 vs Penn State Nov 15 @ Rutgers Nov 22 @ Ohio State Nov 29 vs Purdue   Obviously theres nothing to do about the conference portion of that, so looking at just non conference, we have:      Aug 30 vs Indiana State Sept 6 BYE Sept 13 @ Bowling Green Sept 20 @ Missouri Sept 27 vs Maryland  Oct 4 @ North Texas   I think we should definitely schedule at least three games that will be easy wins. IMO we need those games to make getting to a bowl game easier. Look at the state of the program right now. We need wins so we can get to bowls so we can recruit better talent. Then we can be more picky about getting a tough schedule. Other criteria should be recruiting grounds: we see coach Wilson has a high volume of recruits in his last two classes from Georgia, so games in the south east would be ideal. We should also have one of these games in the Midwest because it is easier to lock down talent close to home. Bowling Green kills two birds with one stone here in easy win and on a recruiting ground in Ohio. North Texas is similar in this aspect and getting into Texas is always a positive.   So, lets assume we keep North Texas and Bowling Green (or teams similar) and we are left with:    Missouri, Indiana State.    In these slots I would like either an evenly matched team or another easy win and one that we are clearly the underdog in (preferably this one on the road in a loud, hostile environment- our players need the experience)    A team to beat up on/be evenly matched with- Indiana State is nice, keeping it in state has some value. But it would be nice to impress recruits on the road. Think somewhere similar to Bowling Green... maybe Iowa State or a directional Michigan school. Maybe a school like Georgia Tech for a challenge   A team to challenge us to get better (IE beat up on us): ideally Notre Dame, but they obviously won't schedule us with their schedules being made years in advance and a plethora of other reasons. A marquee school here is a must so Indiana gets their name in the press, preferably one with an interesting story line but thats not necessary. Continue thinking based on recruiting hotspots, maybe a school like Stanford? UTexas or UGA so recruits get a second chance to see us and IU develops somewhat of a presence in the area.    I also believe it is crucial that we schedule as many easy wins at home as possible. This will allow us have a better record and thus more buzz around the team later in the season. Hopefully this raises the morale/support from the fan base   So, a schedule I would make up would look something like:      Aug 30 vs Eastern Michigan (easy win) Sept 6 BYE Sept 13 @ Bowling Green (easy win/recruiting ground) Sept 20 @ UGA ("Get better game"/recruiting ground) *** Oct 4 @ North Texas (easy win/recruiting ground) Maybe some years Texas Tech or a somewhat evenly matched school in a recruiting area like Georgia Tech   Oct 11 @ Iowa Oct 18 vs Michigan State Oct 25 BYE Nov 1 @ Michigan  Nov 8 vs Penn State Nov 15 @ Rutgers Nov 22 @ Ohio State Nov 29 vs Purdue   You may notice the recurring theme... recruiting. The lifeblood of collegiate athletics. CKW has done a great job recruiting with what has been available to him and the more wins... the easier (and better) recruiting becomes.    My ideal schedule is really not too (maybe any) different from the current one. I really believe Glass is doing a great job scheduling and Wilson is putting a good product on the field.   Apologies if this rambling hurt anybody's head :haha:   ***Edited thanks to Hovadipo pointing out my brain fart.
