(2014) PF Yante Maten to Georgia
KelleyHoosh replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
KelleyHoosh I just find your opinions to be extreme and somewhat reactionary. This kid was ranked 290 in the composite ranking assembled by 24/7. The player and coach both stated that he was waiting for an MSU offer. He got the offer and then picked UGA. The reason Crean missed is easily explainable and should have been expected by all. This is a completely normal occurrence that is being blown out of perspective by our own panic about our big man situation which a 6-8 freshman wasn't going to automatically be the solution. There's no reason to believe he would have been a better solution than HMP or Davis. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
To be clear, I agree completely that Yante wasn't going to dramatically impact next season. I just find it frustrating that we have such a lack of bigs and missed on one not to his supposed dream school but to a football school. J wish we were in a position that we didn't need a low ranked big man just to fill the roster out. That's all. I still am cautiously optimistic for next year! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

We can argue back and forth, we obviously aren't going to change one anothers mind. And thats fine! I want to thank you for the debate, its fun thinking deeply into this type of thing. Please don't misconstrue this as me trying to fight with you, I just enjoyed the debate. Go Hoosiers! -
(2014) PF Yante Maten to Georgia
KelleyHoosh replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
If he said he wanted to play for MSU, he was obviously interested. In recruiting sometimes even when the favorite offers, the kid chooses a school thats been after them longer because they have built a better relationship with the other staff, and a multitude of other reasons that stems back to Izzo probably being too late on the offer. -

How do I know IU is struggling? Um...... look at our recruiting class? Look what we are talking about? Its blind optimism to say we aren't struggling. We have 3 open scholarships and its April. No big men. We can't recruit a big to save our lives this cycle and 2015 isnt looking much better. Michigan State isn't struggling because they missed on Maten, he was a backup plan for them and they are stocked. Us missing on him means more than them missing on him because he was one of our main targets and we don't have a lot of options. They are fine either way. I am the same age as these recruits, probably not half the student of the game that recruits who are playing at the next level are, and I appreciate the aura of IU. I was raised in a basketball house sure, but these kids have most likely done nothing but eat sleep and breathe ball the majority of their lives. They are able to appreciate the blue-blooded nature of IU. If we are pitching that or not, I don't know and nor do I care. I just want us to pull kids. I do think you can blame Crean for failing to keep an in state kid committed and losing him to a rival. Goodluck was by all accounts an IU lock until his visit. If you can't judge a coach by his ability to win recruiting battles, how are you supposed to judge him as a recruiter? Sure we have JB2 and ROJO but we could have been so much more. IU is a sleeping giant of a program. We need to be able to have a full roster at least for it to wake up. -

Everything you said is right. Its part of Crean's job to persuade these kids... we needed a big and we are whiffing. You can't deny that hurts. IU shouldn't lose kids to UGA for basketball. Sure, theres certain instances where kids are predisposed to a preference of one school over another, but this isn't one of those. MSU was the school he really liked. We lost a recruiting battle; not the end of the world. Probably not going to make a huge difference. I'm not freaking out or anything... this just hurts -

The 2014 class is a shell of what it could have been between Lyles and Goodluck. Plus however many other good players. The reason you are siting to calm down is exactly why he should be upset. How is it that IU is struggling to pull a 3 star recruit from Bradley and SCar? Kids with that ranking in the midwest should be lining up for IU. -

What am I wrong about? Everyone said MSU was his dream school, thats one of the most probable reasons why he would turn down a scholarship that he got from them just a few days ago. IU had been recruiting Maten for some time, and missed, to UGA. If that doesn't strike you as unexplainable/not excusable, then we have a difference of opinion. -

Izzo missed probably because he tried to get in so late. Maten probably didn't like feeling like such a second option. Crean's reason for missing, is a lot less explainable... :( -

Guess MSU came too late to the game and Maten preferred UGA to IU :scratchhead: -

Is Coach Crean feeling the heat?
I disagree with that too. You seem to have reading comprehension problems when it comes to my posts. Maybe you should just ignore them. I'll put it to you this way. You've accused me of having some kind of feud with Rayl and JS. I think the real deal is you're trying to have a feud with me. I suggest you give it up. Do I need to make that any more clear for you?
Ahaha okay big bad hwy 1 I won't dare try to converse with you on a message board Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Is Coach Crean feeling the heat?
KelleyHoosh replied to Plasticjimmyhat's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
To be 100% honest with you, I agree. I don't frankly care if an IU basketball player posts a pic of them smoking weed or drunk. The thing is, universities tailor themselves to a politically correct crowd. They're petrified of a PR nightmare (what they perceive to be one- when in reality it gets talked about for three days max and then is forgotten about). Thats why it strikes me as odd that they aren't more on players about this type of thing IMO. -

Reigned in? Not sure what you mean by that. Its a message board meant for conversation. We have different opinions, but thats okay. I think our posts are good for the board because it challenges us to think deeper into issues. For example, I think the school of thought that he is trying to make an issue out of nothing because the player posted a picture of a drink is not reading between the lines enough. I think it is alluding that Indiana doesn't monitor/exercise the same amount of control over players in the same manner as other programs. If that is a big deal, no deal, or irrelevant I don't know. -

I totally see your point and agree. Just guess I don't see the point in posting something like that. To each their own though. I think the bigger point basketball4u was making was when he said there was a bigger issue with the team, which I interpret to mean the administration is not properly punishing kids for incidents. What do I know though? haha -

KelleyHoosh replied to Plasticjimmyhat's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If he had an agenda he would explicitly say everything that he considers wrong with the program/talk about it to a news outlet. I think of his contributions as exactly what he described... a little bit of clarity in murky situations. Its cool to hear a little bit more in depth about the going-ons behind the program. He does it in a vague way, so I don't see how harm can really come from it. -

KelleyHoosh replied to Plasticjimmyhat's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I can't speak for basketball4u but IMO it sounds like there are allusions to the administration not wanting to punish the boys in hopes they can win games. Years where we go 17-15 or whatever, that obviously doesn't work. Theres a reason coaches like Knight, Kryzewski, etc are always known as top of the line disciplinarians. Don't do something stupid that can hurt the program. Being in the news as a college athlete for anything other than on the court performance or community service is generally because of doing something stupid. In essence, I don't think its a problem that they are having college fun. Its a problem that they have an obligation to not put it out there for the world to see because of their association with the basketball program. Oh, and we aren't winning. -
Is Coach Crean feeling the heat?
KelleyHoosh replied to Plasticjimmyhat's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I used to have relatively routine contact with the Georgetown Sports Information Director and he would always speak about how strictly monitored player's social media is. Sure, everyone knows college athletes party. It would be dumb to think they don't. Nobody is asking Crean to put them on a leash and make sure they don't. I don't have a particular opinion on the matter, but this procedure is the norm in college athletics now. Its better to just blend in when it comes to this type of thing and not risk being seen as an unruly program because of pictures considered "embarrassing" to the University from the PC crowd. The kid retweeting things about partying or a picture of alcohol would get taken down if he were at Georgetown. Is it a big deal? No. But it doesn't set forth a great image of the team. People can know drinking and partying goes on, but it doesn't have to be in people's face or easily accessible for everyone. -
Indiana Rivals predicts us to finish 9th next season
KelleyHoosh replied to NotTheReal HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Well, we finished 9th this year... Lose Will's leadership and performance and Vonleh. No big men... You could see why from the outside next year looks bleak. I mean, we lost to the three teams below us. If we had beaten those teams though, we would have been 10-8 in conference. Thats good for tied with Ohio State at 5th place. I'm not sure how the other teams in conference are supposed to look next year, but if everyone were to progress an average amount and we simply win the games we are supposed to, we could be tied for 5th. If the boys put the work in and Crean can figure out a way to sure up the post... we can compete next year IMO. Its very hard to predict at this point in the year. I would love if Vic could come back and show the team a thing or two about pushing yourself -
Indiana Rivals predicts us to finish 9th next season
KelleyHoosh replied to NotTheReal HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I agree that 9th is a possibility. I also believe a top 5 finish is a possibility. I think it depends on a lot of variables, namely offseason improvement from Hanner, Stan, Devin and Troy. If they spend the summer getting better individually, I could see us being similar to '06 Nova. Similar, not necessarily as good. Next year is what I would call a make it or break it year. That doesn't mean I necessarily think Crean will be gone if we don't perform up to par. It will, IMO, just signify that Crean will not be the one to right the ship at IU. That said, I'm cautiously optimistic about next year. Hoping for the best -
That really hurt Cody and Vic in the draft. Think about that! smh
I don't see the need to sass him, he's just pointing out that it's not creans style for someone to play 30+ minutes a game. Subbing like that has it's pros and cons, just like every other philosophy. Excited for JB2 after that performance!!! Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Losing the scholarships will hurt them years after they end. They'll be short on depth. That said, I agree they will be their old selves sooner than later. If the coaching staff can be stable
