I think they should just treat it like a campus job and pay players 10-12 bucks an hour. That's what playing a sport closely resembles. It's like being a college kid with a job. The NCAA already mandates how many hours you can practice in a week. Affordable, easy fix

RE: Blackmon... Not sure how much you can realistically expect his defense to improve off the knee surgeries... That's gotta take a toll on lateral quickness. No info, just speculation

Yogi Ferrell Appreciation Thread
KelleyHoosh replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
For me... Yogi is Indiana basketball. Always brought the right attitude. Always worked hard. Phenomenal talent... Always classy. Looking forward to following his career. You just know he's going to put in the work and be a success in everything he tries -

Um, yeah. From January on to this point of the season -
I'm not ready to jump off the deep end and go back to disliking Crean. I think he put too much trust in his players. He trusted them a lot this year and the majority of the time it paid off... he has to get a better idea of when to intercede IMO. But he was also out a starter and Michigan isn't a slouch IMO. Get back to full health, use this as a wake up call, cross your fingers for a 3 seed and get behind your senior leader Yogi and lets go IU

Positive take: OG played well. We didn't have RoJo. I still think this team can pick itself up come the real tourney and rally behind Yogi -
3 timeouts left with 1:01 left.... don't use one..... .2 seconds left on the clock and we use 2? okay..

SIAP, when do the senior speeches start? -
Win tonight and we have breathing room for a loss at Iowa. I don't see this team losing in Assembly Hall with the Big Ten title on the line against Maryland

What will be interesting IMO is how Crean manages JBJ's minutes next year after seeing how much better we have been largely without him this season

My bad, just cursory scrolling through, saw that and jumped on it. That's on me

I'm less impressed with his back to back championships and more impressed with his teams on court performances over the course of those seasons

What is mediocrity? IMO, its not 22-6 and leading the B10. Nobody could call this season mediocre. Last season and the one before that? Sure. If he has those seasons regularly, I'm all on board with hiring Bryce, Archie, or whatever flavor of the month mid major coach there is. But I'm content writing them off as outliers for now. Maybe I'm wrong and this is just an "up" year for him. We will see. We've seen coaching improvement this season from him. Thats enough for me to try and be positive about the program considering he isn't going anywhere. May as well try and be optimistic, but I understand thats my personal preference so I won't push it on anyone. Just sharing my two cents.

Who would you bring in? Realistically. I'm not trying to settle either, but when thinking of who is actually feasible to bring in, nobody is clear cut better than Crean in my opinion. And I'm not talking about his tenure as a whole, I'm talking about in the last four seasons (if we get at least a share this year) he will have two B10 titles. Considering the rebuild job he had laid out in front of him, thats not half bad. I know Crean isn't God's gift to the coaching world. Everyone here sees that he has a lot of room to grow. But from a stability and winning standpoint, we can drop off significantly if we get a new hire who turns out to be a dud. The next hire HAS to be a top coach IMO. I'm perfectly fine hanging around the top 20 in the mean time. Obviously, if we have more years like last year and the year before, any hire would make more sense. But we will see what truly is the norm for Crean going forward
-
So you're basing your assessment on his coaching ability based on a single elimination tournament rather than the course of an entire season? The tournament is a crap shoot. Should Duke have fired K when they got upset by Mercer? Or in the beginning of his tenure before he really won? You can't just be a revolving door as a program. Its a bad look and makes you less appealing to top applicants. Nobody wants to work somewhere they get fired easily and if Crean wins 2 Big Ten titles in four seasons, who will want to step into this role? I get that the product on the court has been frustrating to watch at times. But I really think that a lot of the fans need some perspective about the landscape of college basketball. Relative to 90% of programs, IU right now is pretty damn successful. Are you trolling? As Walking Boot has demonstrated, there aren't a ton of Izzo's laying around that we can just pick up. The guy is a legend and hall of fame coach, you can't just make someone the head coach of Indiana and think they're going to be able to fill those shoes
-
IMO it doesn't really make sense to want to get rid of Crean right now. He has us in the B10 title hunt, thats not mediocre. If we get a share, that'd be 2 in 4 years, definitely an acceptable rate. Granted those lows were really low, but with better roster balance, the lows may not be as bad. Crean has shown the ability to adapt, perhaps thats something he may fix going forward. Going forward, it makes sense in my mind to keep Crean because when theres the next big coach thats available, its a lot easier to cut ties with Crean than be locked down in a deal we just signed with a new coach who didn't get a fair shake here. This is all a moot point, because Crean is staying through next season at least, whether you like it or not. Barring a terrible off the court incident.
-
I think we can get the regular season title. And I'm more optimistic about our BTT chances with this years team based on how they seem to play to the level of their competition. If they are excited (and they should be) they could totally pull this one out. Slightly OT, but I think a lot of this is because of Thomas Bryant. It feels like last year's team didn't really have that emotional hype man personality.

- We really need Rob Johnson back - We let them back in, gotta get that killer instinct - Refs were awful IMO - How about that game plan from Crean? GREAT defensive game plan. - The front court of Bryant, Morgan, Max, OG, was definitely overmatched against the two 7 footers, but doubling down on them made a world of difference. I won't be scared of any super tall teams we face going forward -

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey ruffled some feathers across the Indiana basketball world when he claimed to have the most consistent program in the state. The facts don’t necessarily support that (in the last four years IU and Notre Dame have the same amount of wins), but the perception coming off a deep NCAA tournament run is that the Irish have been the best team in the Hoosier state. Perception has been something of an enemy for the IU basketball team in recent times, only outdone by reality- a harsh one at that. A 1-2 showing in Maui simmered the excitement around the season many expected to be head coach Tom Crean’s best yet. But perception is a fickle beast. And just like that, a win on Saturday afternoon could alter the nation’s perception of Indiana again. It's a game that matters for more than bragging rights. The fact is, unless IU wins its Crossroads Classic game in Indianapolis, it will have zero non-conference wins to boost its tournament resumé. You’d be hard pressed to call a game in December a, “must win,” but, this game in December just might be a must win. So, how can Indiana get it done? 1) Exploiting Mismatches with a Three Guard Lineup Readers may be surprised to learn that there is indeed a team with worse front court depth than Indiana. The Irish start 6’10” senior Zach Auguste who is averaging a double-double and earning some player of the year talk. Beside Auguste is 6’5” sophomore Bonzie Colson who is obviously undersized though undeniably talented and 6’8” V.J. Beachem who plays more of an outside game. Combine the style IU plays with Notre Dame’s adjusted defensive ranking of 129th in the nation, 18 spots below Indiana’s, and it is easy to deduce that points won’t be hard to come by in this one. 2) Troy Williams’ Shines The Thomas Bryant-Auguste showdown inside will only be outdone by the Yogi Ferrell-Demetrius Jackson matchup on the outside. How these players do against one another will undeniably go a long way in deciding the winner of this game. However, while these are obvious pairs, Notre Dame doesn’t have a single player on its roster that can go toe-to-toe with Williams athletically. The X-factor is Williams in this game. If he can take advantage of his man and make plays, Indiana has the potential to run away with its biggest victory of the season. If his game is out of control, Notre Dame and their second ranked adjusted offense will have a field day. 3) Depth’s Impact on Rebounding Note Dame uses about a seven man rotation and isn’t very tall. Indiana has an abysmal defensive rebounding percentage that ranks 242nd in the country. If there is a game where they can improve on that ranking- it is this one. They have a height advantage across the board and far more depth. If Indiana’s pace can tire out the Irish, they have a chance to clean up on the glass and earn a statement victory.
