Should we stop recruiting five star centers?
Clete Johnson replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
As a coach, you either recruit talent to a style you like to play. Or, you play to the best style, for the team you have recruited. Crean seems to coach more from the first example. With that being said, I think you have a great point, and I would answer with a yes. But, as a fan of the Hoosiers, I would like to answer no, and get the best talent we could get. It comes down to a coach, and I think most college coaches fit in the first group. -
Earth Shattering Changes at NCAA!!!!
Clete Johnson replied to Hwy 1's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I'd probably gain a pound a minute. But, I expect the athletes will burn a lot of it off. My son plays for an NAIA school, and was excited that he had gained 8 pounds during the basketball season. His strength coach told him, " I gain 8 pounds at breakfast." He is supposed to eat 6 meals a day, but still burns every thing off. I would like to have that ability! -
Earth Shattering Changes at NCAA!!!!
Clete Johnson replied to Hwy 1's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Exactly. When is too much, too much. It will be like a buffet. Food will be plentiful, Food will be wasted, and some one will end up paying for it. The NCAA isn't going to pay for it. If the school pays for it, it will be made up with tuition increases, or ticket prices, or parking, etc... If they are paying for it, someone else will be, too. I have no problem with kids getting more food, in fact, I think it is good. But, an unlimited supply might be excessive. -
2015 In-state Recruiting
Clete Johnson replied to Walking Boot of Doom's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
I think in-state kids are good to have, because they help to recruit younger in-state hoopsters. Not necessarily by contact, but maybe a kid watched him play as a high schooler, and wanted to follow in his footsteps. It is good to have a connection all over the nation too. You would like to have a good mix of talented kids! -

Earth Shattering Changes at NCAA!!!!

True. Abused may have been the wrong word, since it is a rule. How long before this rule is taken advantage of, to the extreme? -

How long before this rule gets abused? It is a great thing for the kids, but you know someone will take this to the extreme. Someone is going to be paying for it, as well! -
Cuonzo takes CA job, 3 big commits could leave
Clete Johnson replied to Hwy 1's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I may be bias, but who in their right mind would leave Indiana, for Tennessee? Even if the seat was getting a little warm. -
Been hearing this has been going on with Vonleh
Clete Johnson replied to NotTheReal HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If this is true, it is sad that he is detouring others based on his experience. I am sure he expected to have a bigger impact, and probably a better season, team wise. We all have a tendacy to vent when things don't go as we planned. Hopefully, he will get over any problems he has with the university. Also, I would hope the kids being recruited, would use more then his disappointment, when making their choice. -
I can't stand Calapari. But, I would wish for the same outcome if Kentucky was coached by the pope! I don't care who beats them, just so they go down!

A different look at late recriting mishaps.
Clete Johnson replied to protectthishouse's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I highly doubt they will be without a scholarship next season. Crean seems to like a change-up in his roster from year to year. There will be movement next season. -
24 second shot clock.
Clete Johnson replied to WayneFleekHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
As many shot clock violations I saw this year, from our Hoosiers, and other teams. I am not sure that is a good idea. -
K***** S****** to Houston?
Clete Johnson replied to Hoosierfan1990's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I actually was more excited about Sampson's hiring at IU, then I was Crean's. Obviously, In hindsight, Crean was the better hire for the university. I always liked Sampson's way of getting everything out of his players, and he seemed like a good " in game" coach. I had not been aware of his shadiness at Oklahoma, and thought he would get us back to winning. I am much fonder of the way Crean gets good kids, and tries to uphold the reputation of IU. I think Sampson will be a good coach for Houston, if he can run a clean program. -
Indiana Rivals predicts us to finish 9th next season
Clete Johnson replied to NotTheReal HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I can understand the prediction. My only thought is that there is a lot of time before the season starts. I will wait until the end of summer to start panicing. -
(2014) PF Anthony Lee to OSU
Clete Johnson replied to maxwell's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Iowa State scares me. Hoiberg is great at getting transfer kids, He has connections to the NBA, And they are a hot team right now. I think Crean will give it all that he has, and it's the thing I think he is best at. Guess we will have to wait until it all plays out. Would be a nice pick up, though! -
Visiting Bloomington for the first time, any suggestions?
Clete Johnson replied to akhosrof's topic in Off Topic Forum
I was actually planning to be at that game. But, one of my son's make-up games, was rescheduled for that night. Had to sell my ticket. But, I will shoulder the blame, and hopefully, be there for the next one! -
Ohio State is about to experience our pain
Clete Johnson replied to Walking Boot of Doom's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
They have a solid group coming in, talent wise. But, you never know how they will buy in. Craft was like a fly, at a picnic, always buzzing around, pestering the heck out of people. That will be hard to replace. Young guys usually don't start off in a defensive state of mind. I am not sure they will drop to the level that IU did. I would be surprised if they aren't in the upper end of the conference, yet again, next year. Time will tell. -
Visiting Bloomington for the first time, any suggestions?
Clete Johnson replied to akhosrof's topic in Off Topic Forum
I actually visited Bloomington, for the first time, for the Iowa game. My wife got me tickets for Christmas, and she is an Iowa fan, so we thought that would be a good game to see. We drove 45 miles an hour through Illinois, through ice and snow to get there the night before the game. The next day we toured the campus, went to Cook Hall, and just looked around the town before getting the news that the game had been postponed. I did make a second trip, with my brother (also a Hawkeye fan), to catch the game when it was made up. Didn't get to spend as much time as I wanted, in Bloomington, but absolutely loved it. Hoping to make a return trip next season and spending a little more time to get to enjoy the town. -
The Great S%&* Storm of 2014
Clete Johnson replied to FortWayneHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I had some Marquette fans tell me, when Crean got hired, to expect yearly departures in the program. I, obviously, thought they were upset because they were losing their coach. It is starting to look like they had a legitimate warning. I realize, there are always kids that feel the need to transfer. But, it seems there have been above number transfers, within the Hoosiers program, since Crean has come in. -
I see what you are saying, and make him finish the season, I agree. But, a kid finishing a whole school year, unhappy, may lead to a lot bigger problems then just being homesick. A lot of kids are making their first, big decision of their lives. I would have made my son finish the season, if basketball had started. And, they should know by the time basketball starts, if they are homesick or not.

(2014) PF Anthony Lee to OSU
Clete Johnson replied to maxwell's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
He is interested in Iowa State, and Hoiberg has a good thing going right now, in Ames. I think he would probably start, as the big man, depending on what else happens in the off season. -
I don't really see this being a great move for Buzz. I think Va. Tech would be a tough place to recruit to. As for Luke, I have a son that is a college freshman, playing basketball at a NAIA school. I was really worried about him being home sick when he started school. Luckily, he was fine, but if he had wanted to come closer to home I would have moved him closer. They are kids, and making big decisions in their young life. I don't blame Luke at all. This is an unfortunate situation, for him, though.

When you get that kind of play from Adam Woodbury, you think it is a win. Unfortunately, Marble couldn't hit. Give credit to Tennessee for playing hard D, and keeping Iowa well below their scoring average. Great game, until the extra period.

Who would you hire to replace CTC?
Clete Johnson replied to KelleyHoosh's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Brad Stevens would be my first choice. I think Jamie Dixon would be a good one, too. I like how his teams play tough, and really focus on the defensive side. Dane Fife is pretty young, but I would try to get him on the staff. -
I thought Bennett turned down an interview, with IU. Maybe I am wrong about that, but it seems his name was floated around.
