NCAA MBB Coaching Carousel
Feathery replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
The issue isn’t typically being admitted, it’s the loss of credits Michigan won’t accept. They lost both Caleb Love and Terrance Shannon Jr because of it. On the football side of things they wouldn’t take online course work from a WR a few years ago, so that player went to Texas and just broke the record for the fastest 40 time at the combine. -

Michigan basketball NIL is a mess and the boosters focus on football. If Dusty does well, I could see him being open to leaving for IU in the future. But Michigan isn’t a top job in the conference when they have academic issues for transfers and lack NIL funds for basketball. Tough job. Good luck to Dusty. -

The main guy who covers Michigan said on Wednesday that UL’s top choice is May but it might not be Mays top choice, and he believed Michigan had a shot. When he says something like that and backs someone it’s typically from the AD -

Honestly, I think Crean would have been even better in this era. He knows how to navigate the portal and with Iu now financially backing the program he wouldn’t have had the big drop offs. All a moot point now and wish Crean well in whatever he does. -

Listened to a Michigan show this morning. Sam Webb has a show in Ann Arbor and is head of the Michigan 24/7 site, as well as the unofficial mouthpiece for the athletic department. His #1 candidate is Dusty May and said Louisville might have Day as their number 1 but UL might not be Mays top choice. The panel all agreed Indiana fans ticked we have Woodson and will let May slip away. -

Well Cal is a proven winner. Fire Woodson to get Coach Cal. No seriously, do it. -

It’s ok, we have Woodson for 4-5 more years. Thats enough time for May to prove himself and get tired of UL. -

I don’t think people are advocating for another I bc they want it beyond depth. It’s that they expect it to happen and I believe Rabby said a week ago or so they wanted to get a run protector in the portal. -

Villanova under Jay Wight had a ton of success with quality guards and undersized bigs. -

As a normal person I wouldn’t give either. But say all $6 million in NIL comes from the richest person in Indiana, who has a $6 billion net worth. That’s the same as someone with $100,000 net worth giving $100 to NIL. I know people who spend more than $100 on Girl Scout cookies, because well….thin mints are good. Lol -

That was the initial plan. But then Texas A&M and other schools in the SEC and OSU started to splash the cash for the best players for pay for play. They do this bc the players talent brings them the value and they need the talent to be competitive. The NCAA tried to crack down and got sued and lost. And are now being sued again by Virginia and Tennessee so the NCAA isn’t investigating any NIL issues moving forward and stopped any investigations they had going. We are in the pay for play being legal for all schools and not just Duke. UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, etc. this actually benefits IU, since they have a strong NIL program for men’s basketball. They just need to get the coaching figured out. edit: Schools can now help steer athletes to NIL deals. It’s why you see schools hiring GM’s to help with that function. -

A lot of kids have agents so schools can reach out and vice versa. Or go to their high school. Many ways to go around the actual rule. -
I think we need a PG and a SG that can both shoot it from deep. Then have MM, MR, and a new C. That would be 3 threats from deep to open the middle a little. Short of that, it’s going to be a long year imo.

He is definitely talented. And I’m not wanting him to leave, which is why I said part of me. I can see how it would be a benefit. But that’s not the style we are going to play. So we will need his post play. Hopefully he can work on his ft shooting as well.
-
Part of me believes it would be better for IU and MR to part ways. But then I remember that we would just get another post player to replace him with in the starting lineup to have 2 post players starting.

Two young players who are not talented enough. Definitely need an upgrade in the bench. -

Early 60’s isn’t old. He has a solid 7-8 years left of coaching. That’s plenty of time for Him to make IU a top program again. Then it’s in a much better spot for the next guy. There is less risk because there is a long track record of success. The younger guys is a bigger gamble. No track record beyond a single group of players. It’s why so many mid major coaches that jump up a level after a good run in March flame out. -

I think Woody is back. If Dolson wants to make the move and can’t, then he has to start thinking outside the box. I didn’t get paid anywhere near this but it’s something that was similar happened to me. I was asked to take a job I didn’t necessarily want or like for a short time until the job I wanted opened up. So it can happen. At least with the proposed idea above May could get that recruiting jump start, and maybe land Sisley and Mullins. But by sitting on his hands Dolson is setting the program back a couple of years. Fine Woodson is back, then make a chess move Dolson and don’t set the program back further. The new TV deal makes IU have plenty of money for a $4 mil salary to May for a season before he becomes coach. -

It’s why I think they should name May the heir apparent. Have it be like the Keady Painter transition. But let Woodson do his thing for the final season. May recruits for the future. -

I know the goal is to compete for championships. But you have to learn to crawl before you can walk. If he keeps making the tournament that turns us into Bo Ryan Wisconsin and this last season was just a blip. I don’t see Woodson turning it around bc I only see 1 path for it to work. We are going with 2 bigs again next year. Which means you need 3 shooters at the other positions. Then focus on kicking the ball out more from the post. Beyond getting 3 shooters to go with the 2 post players, I can’t see it working. -
Not just you. Can’t take a flyer on a kid with an injury history this offseason. In the future if the roster is more established then you can take a shot on a high upside kid who had an injury.

I’m assuming if the better players leave or if they struggle to land impact players. But why move on on the summer of that happens. Who is going to come in with that roster and no ability to adjust it. So it’s not going to happen imo. So the hope is next year is a good season and they land multi year players on the portal. Then a change is made bc the Big Ten Title and Final Four were not met. But bc of the strong NIL, players will stay during the coaching change. -

Let Woodson run it how he sees fit for one more year. But let Dusty get to work for the future, build those relationships with the 25’ guys. Woodson can go all in for next year. Who gives a crap. We know it’s not going to meet expectation. He gets to go out on his terms and IU has their guy who has been able to have a year head start on future recruiting. Woodson won’t even have to recruit a single person.
