Tom Crean to Alabama Rumor Thread

You don't think guys like Marshall have a better resume than Crean while he was at Marquette? Crean had dWade for 2 season, other than that it was like Mike Davis. There are plenty of guys out there with more consistancy than Tom Crean has had in his Marquette and IU gigs.

    Thoughts on Archie Miller

Hard to tell his pace by a NCAA game. These games are traditionally played on the half court not an up and down transition game. To win an NCAA tournament you need to have a good half court offense and a top defense. It's why people like coaches who have a style like Stevens, Marshall, and Miller. Transition is great but even UNC has a solid half court game when they have won it all. Can Archie be the same type of coach? I have my doubts for now. More years of expierence and maybe I'd be on board with him being the next great coach.

Finished above 5 in his conference only 1 time. Winning % similar to Crean. While he is still super young and looks to be promising, his resume is lacking compared to others. Definitely a bigger risk than more seasoned more successful coaches.

Someone check on Hova, hate to see him hyperventilate now that Dayton has came back and took the lead.

I'd have Bennet a over Archie for sure. Bennett is only 45 years old as well.

    Thoughts on Archie Miller

I could see Archie staying at Dayton until the correct job comes available. He wouldn't leave for Bama or Another big conference middling/bottom feeder program. If Donovan would leave Florida, then I could see a coach like Miller leaving then. Texas would be another job he could jump to.

It was actually a fantastic read. I recommend it.

Doubt it is Shaka. Why would they go the VCU route again? Shaka is a bust waiting to happen at a big time program. A place like Bama he would end up being similar to what Grant did.

Lol. Did you not read the article I posted yesterday that said Marshall is only leaving for a blue blood program?

Their scout board seems to want him. There a few who want miller or marshall.

    Assembly Hall

I was in favor of a new stadium as long as it would be loud and have improved viewing areas. Alas we are getting a renovation. The inner bowl isn't changing. So if you sit in a bad seat it will still be a bad seat. The outer shell is getting the renovation. Lobby, concourses, restrooms, etc will get a facelift. the finished product should look nice.

I was looking to see when you would post in this thread. Will you change your name to ArchieDipo if he ever came to IU?

    IU & WSU Schedule Switch

i think IU would be a top 3 MVC team (WSU and UNI the other 2). I think WSU would be a top 5 Big Ten team.

Tom Crean to Alabama Rumor Thread

I think we find out after we exit the tournament. Here is my take after talking with a person who deals with communication and the press daily. One time at Marquette Crean came out and publicly denied he was interested in leaving Marquette to put rumors to rest. He didn't do that when he left for IU. If Crean was 100% staying he would have came out and said so. He had the opportunity and platform to do it on his radio show on Monday. It could have been put to bed and the rumors stopped before the busy week of an NCAA game is to be played. Instead you hear silence from Crean. You hear nothing from Fred Glass. Also notice that Seth Davis tweets out that a "source" close to Crean said he wasn't persuing the Bama job, nor has Bama reached out. Maybe it's true maybe it's not. But he didn't say Crean is staying at IU and not looking to go to any other job. Crean might just be looking at another job after the season, Seton Hall, DePaul, etc. Basically I'm the type of person that look at actions more than I do words. Especially when the business is to keep things hush hush before a move is made. Crean very well may stay but I won't believe it bc Seth Davis and other people put out a tweet about a specific job. when we know IU has put out feelers to other coaches and their are other jobs available that are better than Bama for Crean. I'll wait to see if anything happens in the next week or 2.

    Potential fallout from coaching change

They did but IU wasn't willing to pony up the $$$.

whoever the next coach is I'll support him. If Crean stays I won't like it but I'll still pull for a victory every game.

How do you get sustained March success? To me you need to build a team that wins and competes consistsntly for conference titles, both regular season and tournament. The more you are fighting at the top of your conference the more likely you are to get top seeds, making the route to the final four easier. (Think Calipari with UK in a terrible SEC and Memphis in CUSA, win the conference get a 1 seed make a final four) Brad Stevens never finished lower than 3rd in his conference. Winning a title 4 of 6 seasons. Marshall finished in the top 3 in conference 15 of 17 seasons. Winning 17 titles. On an even playing field he translate intonhaving huge success. Donovan every year they made a run in the dance they were at the top or near the top of the conference. Tony Bennett in 9 seasons has finished below 4th in conference 3 times, 2 were building UVA. Has won the ACC twice and been to a couple S16's (2 seed this year) When he has had a top conference team he has made his runs. Pitino has made his runs when his teams were at the top of the conference. Even his providence team was a top 4 team in conference. Coach K has had 1 season since 1983 where they finished outside the top 4 of the ACC. Think it's a coincidence they are the standard bearer for what everyone else is trying to be. They win or compete at the top of the conference, giving them better seeds, easier to advance, in turn easier to recruit. Ultimately we want the same thing. An IU that is competing for a national title. Love the debate.

    Potential fallout from coaching change

Read that article I posted above and it talks about why he hasn't left the mid major level yet. Archie Miller, I like him but he doesn't have the same resume of Marshall and would be a bigger risk. Archie has never won his conference and finished better than 5th in his conference only 1 time. He would be a risky hire from the mid major level. Everyone remembers his elite eight last season. The NCAAs shouldn't be the barometer for who our next coach is. Sustained regular season success will lead to our March success.

    Potential fallout from coaching change

I'm just wanting valid reasons for why he wouldn't be a good fit. Want them backed up by facts. I don't think most IU fans know enough about him and are saying they don't want him. If it's not IU he will be the next coach at UNC, Duke, or UK. He is willing to wait. My reasons for him being in my top 3 (Stevens, Bennett, Marshall) are as follows. -he has a proven record of building a team - he emphasizes and teaches both sides of the ball -he wins championships: -9 regular season conference championships -8 conference tournament championships (that makes 17 championships over a 17 year span) -finished runner up 5 times, and only outside the top 3 in his conference twice (first 2 years building WSU). -after his program is built even in a "down year" he competes. -His style historically is what translates to success come March. (Play defense and effective in the half court) -overall win % is .715 -doesn't need stars to be highly effective -he makes adjustments I think that translates well for a quality resume. Then we can project what he can do with better athletes and players he would have available at IU. Don't get me wrong I love Brad Stevens and is my #1 choice , but if we get Gregg Marshall it would be a home run. The fans should rejoice that we got a coach of his quality and get on board.

No he didn't and it's not close. outsode of the 2 dWade seasons Crean was similar to Mike Davis not a top coach.

Why? What doesn't Marshall bring to the table? Assume Stevens says no.

    Potential fallout from coaching change

I get where you are coming from but I have the opposite view. Even before his radio stuff last night I thought Crean was gone just by the way he has been carrying himself. Calm and at peace. Being emotional after games. Totally out of character for him. The coach we are used to seeing is spastic and if he is emotional after a game it's a blow by hand shake or going after a Michigan assistant. He is actually looking like he is fighting off tears. To me that's a sign of a man that knows his time is short and he will be leaving ppl that he loves behind. I could be wrong but it's just my assumption from his body language/emotions.

    Potential fallout from coaching change

IU wanted nothing to do with him bc of his salary demands. UL is going to give him a raise of we come knocking. Do you really think IU will break the bank on Pitino? 5-6 million? Regular season should be what we are looking at. We got a mediocre coach bc we saw he had a final four the ncaa tournament is a crap shoot. The regular season shows you if you can have sustained success. It shows can you win championships. If the answer is yes then you have the right guy. Bc once he gets to IU his talent level will raise and tournament success will follow. Will their be upsets? Yes. Will there be good runs? Yes. The key is to have the consistancy to be a threat most years.
