They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Feathery replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Galloway 46% was on low volume so the stat is skewed. He was also forced into a PG role he wasn’t comfortable with and his shooting suffered. He did shoot more 3’s this year than the year he averaged 46%, but that % dropped to 26%. Many of those misses were wide open as well. Top 3 shooters by attempts per game were Shifino, Kopp, and Tamar Bates. To replace those we had Galloway (see above), Cupps, and Gunn. That’s a downgrade in shooting giving the situation the team had last year. To attempt the same amount per game given the drop in talent is a sign that the coaches were saying no don’t shoot it or it’s the system. Ppl want to hammer Woody for saying it wasn’t his job to get Kopp shots. But the system does provide many open 3’s that players just didn’t take. This team can easily shoot over 20 3’s without playing outside of the system. That puts them in line with Purdue this last year who had a post dominant team. -

Its 3pt ability over system. The players last year passed up a lot of 3’s per game. It wasn’t bc the coaches said don’t shoot it. It was the players passing them up on their own bc they were not comfortable shooting them. -

Yeah Mgbako will shoot more 3’s. He was already averaging shooting more than 4 3’s a game. I could see him shooting 6-7 a game. Carlyle 4.3 3 pt attempts a game. Rice averaged 3.7 attempts per game. Both Carlyle and Rice should project to shoot at least 1-2 more per game coming off their freshmen years. To contrast Cupps and Galloway were the starters last year and seem to be coming off the bench. So we shouldn’t see an increase in their 3 pt attempts. Galloway averaged 0.8 attempts from 3 last season. Cupps averaged 0.4 attempts from distance. Without any increases or decreases Carlyle and Rice averaged 6.8 more attempts than Cupps and Galloway. That isn’t bc of the offense it’s bc of ability. just the increase in attempts the new backcourt is bringing in, IU should increase from 15 attempts a game from last season to 21.8 attempts a game. That doesn’t include any increase from Mgbako. -

Depends. Ballo will rebound and be the rim protector. End of a close game you will need that. Could do some offensive and defensive substitutions. But Ballo is a net positive over a low FT%. And his 2 pt FG% is very very good. He might miss the and 1 FT though. If we are in a game with a lead and the other team is on foul mode then sure, put someone else in. The other team is scrambling to make up points in that situation. -

He doesn’t fit the modern game. But is talented in what he does. Moving forward I hope IU doesn’t recruit players of this skill set. Much rather see a 6’7”-6’9” guy that can shoot it play the 4. -

He has consistently given most his minutes to starters. Not the guys off the bench. Injuries have opened up more minutes. But Woody and most coaches for that matter play their starters more than bench players. It will be interesting how the summer goes but with a freshmen to sophomore jump, I dont expect Galloway to be as talented as Rice, Carlyle, or Mgbako. -

I think Woody does love him, doesn’t mean woody wants to start him and rely on him as a key (starter or top option scoring)cog. I also believe starting matters. If you start, you are going to be playing more minutes than those on the bench. Total overall minutes matter. You want your best roster to have the most time on the floor together. Galloway can still get over 20/25 min a game coming off the bench bc he is versatile and can cover multiple positions. Who did he play over last year that was more talented than he is? To me there isn’t a better guard/wing on last years roster better than Galloway. Thats also an indictment of how poor the overall talent was in the backcourt. 2 years ago, he didn’t play him over guys like Shafino/X who are better than him. The rest of the wings were not better than Galloway. 3 years ago, Galloway played less than Rob Phinisee, and Tamar Bates due to being out part of the season. But once back he didn’t play ahead of anyone who was more talent than. Im not trying to knock Galloway. He is a good basketball player. But he isn’t elite. With a strong roster I think you can see him come off the bench and have an even bigger impact. -

I agree, while in principle I think Woody likes vets over younger players. But he also seems to like NBA talent over college vets. Carlyle is an NBA talent and Galloway is not. It’s why I think Galloway comes off the bench and it’s a role he is better suited for. -

Understand the point. But there is 5+ open 3’s a game that were passed up. The players passed them up, without the coaches telling them to not shoot an open 3. They take what’s already open and they average the same number of 3pt shots a game as Purdue. -

I’m pretty sure the players have said the coaches don’t tell them not to shoot the open 3. -

I don’t think they were talking starting lineup. But Malik will see plenty of bench time, especially if he doesn’t clean up the fouling. -

Yeah I can’t see athletes in non revenue sports getting paid. So a spin off will have to happen. Also to get around Title IX. -

It’s been heading this way for awhile now if it’s a topic that you’ve followed consistently. Essentially the schools paying is going to end up being revenue sharing through the tv contracts. Which are not going to be tax payer money but commercial is revenues from the athletic departments tv contracts. Which is the revenue that the players are helping make possible. What I don’t agree with is when I hear people say once there is revenue sharing that there won’t be a need for NIL. I think what will happen is the SEC and Big Ten will have the best base salaries bc their tv deals are bigger than the rest. But then you’ll have Joe Blow used car lot owner in Tuscaloosa providing extra incentives for a player to go to Bama. Sort of like the old under the table, against the NCAA rules, type NIL. -

Maybe Tyme is Ya or someone on staff. If you look at his replies he said “We had it under control”. We would imply staff to me. I know he is lurking. See if he deletes the reply. lol. -

I agree. Maybe it was the right coach at the wrong time. Would be he most IU thing ever. Sampson was the right coach but screwed it up. -

But is the gravy made with spicy sausage? Most restaurant sausage gravy seems very bland to me so I avoid it and just make it at home. Usually go with a skillet or omelette when dinning out. -
Not sure how this works but couldn’t he just get paid his NIL deal on a lump sum on the Bahamas? They would be out of the country and outside of any foreign student issues. Maybe he goes back home this summer for a week and gets paid NIL while there. I doubt we ever hear how it was done but take schools have figured it out.

Totally agree. If he wins then 99% of the fans will be off his back. NIL support at least shows me that whenever IU makes a change due to retirement or firing, the program will be able to land players. -
