Honestly, I stay away from it myself. I could get sucked in, so I just don’t do it.

Well it wouldn’t be a bet it would be you just giving me your money. Of course Matta would have a staff. That’s not even a debate and that was the bet I offered you. Lol.

Then take my bet. it’s your fearful thinking that thinks Matta and other candidates can be successful at IU. Or it’s your lack of experience.
  4. I’d take Beard. His offense does struggle at times. He is on the list but his style doesn’t fit what Dolson said he is looking for in an attractive style.

    Candidate Thread: Scott Drew (Baylor)

I think it comes from the Perea thing. But let’s be honest his assistant said the deportation threat. Drew should have fired him but didn’t. Not firing him was his crime. People need to get over it. No college coach has that authority and it was an empty threat.

And Stevens isn’t a perfect hire. He wasn’t killing it at Butler when they switched to the A10. He also went to the CBI the year after the second championship game. So his final two years weren’t that good. Hmmm sounds like Matta but it was when you were younger than when Matta had his 1 bad year.

It’s not wishful thinking when Lewis has stated he hates seeing IU down. He played here and is from southern Indiana. It’s not wishful thinking to say there are capable assistants who will come. It’s just common sense and experience that tells me that relationships don’t go away when someone steps away. Do people change positions sure, but he will build a staff and get after it if he gets back in the game. Just because you don’t know his circles doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a tree of coaches to get assistants from. You don’t think many of his former assistants wouldn’t give him good advice for some guys they know? I actually think you are trolling so I’ll bet you $5,000 that if Matta takes a head coaching job he will have a staff of assistant coaches, want that bet? If not, stop with the trolling.

He is still connected in coaching. You don’t coach for as long as he has and lose everything in 4 years. He has relationships that go back to when you were in elementary school. Also IU brings its own cache of coaches who will want to be an assistant here.

You are one scared fan. Seems like you are scared to death of anything but perfection. Hate to tell you, there has never been and never will be a perfect candidate. Your concerns are actually just fears and you can’t prove he lost his recruiting touch. He has a college aged daughter. He didn’t forget how to talk to young people. He couldn’t build a staff? What are you taking about? People won’t want to be assistant for him? Or at IU? Michael Lewis would come back as an assistant in a heartbeat for example.

No Archie ran his own system. Matta’s teams, especially those that were successful, could all shoot it. He also doesn’t run a the pack line defense.

Or maybe he took some time off to do rehab and to enjoy life and recharge the batteries. Nothing wrong with taking some time off when you’ve earned it. He was probably healthy but reluctant to test his back until he trusted he was back to 100%. A lot of people are skittish for awhile after major surgery. If he is ready now, then let’s go. You asked if he will build a staff? Of course he will have a staff. Just because you were in middle school when he was in the final doesn’t mean that the high school and AAU coaches don’t know or have a relationship with him and those he will have as assistants. Especially the coaches in this state where he cleaned up. He would also have a roster of sophs and Juniors with talent that can be a top half conference team or even at the top with a coach of his caliber.

Matta has won 20 games every year but 1 (his last) over his entire career. His last 4 years he still won 25, 24, 21, 17 games respectively. Only his last year is of concern from a total number of wins. But you can see by his record his health was an issue. He absolutely left a solid roster for Holtmann. If he is back to being healthy, then this is a no brained for Dolson. Let’s go.

    Candidate Thread: Porter Moser

That’s Archie’s fault. He had better guard play at Dayton but he relied on a lot of 1 on 1 play of Scoochie Smith. There were offensive issues at Dayton as well. Lots of 40/50 point games. I never saw Dayton just pick apart a team of Illinois caliber to get any shot they wanted time and time again. Moser is better than Archie.
  14. I know Texas has money but they care way more about football than basketball. They just spent a lot of money getting rid of their football coach. I don’t think they will dip into that well for a secondary sport to them in the same year. Shaka has a $7.1 million buyout and Beards higher buyout for Texas, then his salary increase. Seems like a lot for a school that isn’t all in on basketball.

2021 NCAA March Madness - Indianapolis

Baylor is definitely athletic. I want to see them play Gonzaga. Was at the Zags game last night and they are very skilled, but they are not overly athletic. I want to see how they do against a top team that’s athletic in March. Should be fun.

If he is healthy and feels great, then this search should be short. Stevens said no, give Matta a great contract and let’s go.

Way to avoid the question posed. I’m not ok with the above. However, I know people can grow and advance in their careers. Everyone is drooling over Stevens, if Moser makes another Final Four this year his last 4 years will be on par with Stevens at Butler.

Do you think coaches improve over time? If not, how do you explain his last 4 seasons compared to his years before that? Seems like he has figured things out to me.

    General Coach Candidate News

Marquette isn’t competition for any coach IU offers. They can’t and won’t pay what IU is reportedly willing to pay. Also rumors of them going for Shaka of Texas makes a move. IU wouldn’t go for Shaka.
