With the new TV deal IU can afford to make Drew or anyone the highest paid coach in college basketball. Or at least double Drew’s salary to $7.5 a year. The man won a national title at Baylor…..Baylor. Let that sink in. He is also still only 53. Plenty of time left in his career.

They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Feathery replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Oh I didn’t say it’s ideal. I’ve literally watched a combined 4 games all season. Been scarce on the boards for a good while now. IU Basketball has been dull and boring to watch even in wins the last 7-8 years. Found better things to do with my time. If IU isn’t going to take the their basketball program seriously, then as I fan I won’t either. I just think he made the dance the last 2 years and they will make a concerted effort to support him this offseason before making any move for change after 1 bad year. I agree with you that the talent evaluation isn’t right. Watched Ledlum a little today and he was a guy they were all over. Not a good fit for the modern game. Whenever a change is made, I’d look at a proven winner to get things going. Drew would be the idea candidate but why leave Baylor. I’d look at McDermott, Moser, May, Oats, and Beard. Honestly don’t care about the baggage, just win. -

It’s not going to happen. Maybe he retires at year end, but doubtful. Best bet for a turnaround is NIL money spent on guards and wings this offseason. Problem is IU will have to overpay to get the quality needed to turn it around. -
Who fills the last scholarship?

Really it’s not the backup plan. The backup plan is Cupps. Galloway is the tertiary plan. You’d need to have 2 things go wrong to get to the scenario of Galloway running the PG duties 30 minutes a game. At that point I’d argue it is what it is. There isn’t enough roster space to account for all possible worst case scenarios. Conversely say Ware gets injured and one of the other bugs isn’t ready to go. Well now was are screwed in the post bc we went from 4-5 deep to 2-3 deep. We also have Newton who is a combo guard who can play some spot minutes if needed at PG. If we add a player I’d get a wing over someone to be 3rd string PG. still the thinnest area imo. -

Underrated imo. Top 15. Get a SG or someone on the roster makes a leap and we are top 10. -

And yet even the first to do it says he doesn’t actually know. He is just hedging his guess bc it’s Kansas. Others are following his lead imo. Nothing to see here until Friday. -

Hoosiers. That’s my pick, both with my head and gut. -

I’m going to choose to believe IU is in this until Slater or MM says otherwise. Nobody else is credible on this one imo. As a fan on these boards for a long time I got labeled as negatIve but I maintained I’m just a realist. Lol. For whatever reason I trust Mike Woodson as in my eyes he has brought some stability back to the program. For that I’m thankful. -

Most Michigan fans think the delay is due to academics. They haven’t announced any of their incoming transfers yet. They have a history of having difficulty getting transfers in. Or at least getting them in with acceptable number of credits. Im a Michigan football fan and was listening to one of their popular podcasts on my way to work. Evidently they only offered $70k to Hunter Dickinson. Their 24/7 guy thinks the $3 mil for HD is way over exaggerated. But more seem to think he will get 7 figures over his 2 years at KU. Seems most of Michigans NIL is going to football. Just like I hope most of IU’s NIL is going to basketball. -

The counter point is all the open looks that Tamar and others got and missed or passed on taking. And Woodson and staff saying we need you to come here and take these shots and make them. -

Exactly what I was thinking. Money isn’t everything but if the difference is large enough from another offer AND it’s a solid program, then money is the factor to come to IU. I do not think IU will outbid Kansas though. Michigans board was claiming KU offered Hunter Dickenson a $4 mil NIL package over 2 years. -

Getting some guys of that caliber, and I’m sure there will be more available, is why I’m not too worried about the roster yet. The NIL money is there and the playing time is available. When the roster fills up I’m confident IU will be anywhere from a top half conference team to a conference title contender. -
It’s not they are rushing to get an end of the bench guy before a wing. They know they need a wing. But players don’t commit/sign on a fans timeline. They commit on their timeline. So we could sign all bigs before the first wing decides to join. Doesn’t mean the staff haven’t prioritized it. Selling to bigs is a easier proposition for the staff to sell bc of TJD, so spots fill faster there. IU has t had an elite shooting guard/wing to sell to recruits. So it’s a tougher sell to get a guy to come. Filling every spot means the staff can sell the “you’re the final piece to our team” to a player.
-
Seems like they want 1 more big (bench) and then a starting caliber wing(2,3,or 4 that can shoot). Leaving 1 spot open for someone coming available unexpected. Just to allow that flexibility and it keeps a scholarship open for a high school kid in the next class. Allowing the young guys like Gunn, Cupps, etc to get backup minutes. With the rate MR would foul as a freshmen a 4th post player is necessary imo. just how I’m seeing it play out. No inside info.

This. The NCAA has never had a legal leg to stand on to keep people from earning money off of their name. They couldn’t have stopped this if they tried.
-
I guess I don’t view it as another G-League. I view it as IU and others can now compete with Duke and UK on a regular basis because some schools have been doing this for decades, while claiming to do the right thing. The NCAA turned a blind eye or couldn’t do anything about it because of limitations of not having subpoena power. I think the market will eventually level out. It may take a couple of years. If you think basketball is bad, go take a look at football. After listening to a few podcasts it appears at some point most think the NCAA will be separate from the power 5. The NCAA already doesn’t have a say in the college football playoffs. So someone will either have to reform the NCAA or they will get left by the conferences with the most money. The NCAA tournament is a cash cow though. It will be interesting.
-
Yup. IU hasn’t been relevant consistently since Duke and UK really started spending in the 90’s. A year here or there but nothing consistent. MSU paid Dawson and other under the table and have been dominant since the 90’s. This new model is the only way IU can have a shot of being elite again consistently. Glad we have a coach who is used to free agency. If someone gets paid to play basketball is diminishing ones enjoyment of the game, I’m not sure what to say to that. Seems odd that people are disgruntled that young adults are making money from their skills.
-
Which is what was happing before NIL came around. Of course NIL is pay for play. It was always going to be pay for play. And it’s an avenue for schools who follow the rules to close that gap. Not sure why that bothers you? IU people have been on this trying to get up to speed to try and catch up with the cheating schools who already had an infrastructure in place for years. After Fred Glass resigned as AD, he has been working with Cook and others to set up collectives in order to help IU recruiting. The amount of work a kid has to do at IU for their NIL deal is really minimal IMO. Put out some tweets, show up at a few events is what Race and TJD have to do to get their 6 figures. But the Indiana companies that they are representing through Hoosiers for Good have had increased traffic and donations since it was announced. So it’s not all doom and gloom.
-
Probably not long. Tennessee just passed a state law allowing their universities to have direct and public contact with collectives. edit: responding to IU eyedoc above.
-
Except your tax dollars aren’t paying for the scholarships at IU. The athletic department actually helps fund the university through their profits. Which was a major complaint of the previous president, because he was siphoning athletic profits to pay for non-athletic projects.
-
You’re probably right. I just think Geronimo came on at the end of the season and that trajectory continues. So it’s a Bates/JHS debate for me. I went with the soph leap, as both were similarly ranked and JHS is a true freshmen and coach liked doing whole line substitutions. Lol
-
I think TJD comes back because of NIL and not being able to get drafted in a position to make more money. My guess in starting 5 to start the season: XJ, Bates, Geronimo, Race, TJD bench: JHS, Leal, Galloway, Kopp, Reneau I’m interested to see how much weight Duncomb puts on. He likely odd man out but have an eye on his junior year to step in after Race and TJD are gone. I also think Bates makes that sophomore leap. His form looked good on his shot and he is athletic. I just have this feeling he will shoot well and average 12+ppg next year, while playing good defense.
