They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Feathery replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Clearly you never played sports or went to IU. Or things are just different since you went to school at IU. You’re looking at things linear. It’s much more complex than that. You don’t understand how the inner workings of the Iu culture works. -

Crean talked about having an edge when his teams played. Maybe they watched old Crean videos. -

I think it was the fans who lit a fire under Dolson to have a talk with Woodson about his lack of recruiting. And I wouldn’t be surprised if it gave the staff and players and edge to prove ppl wrong. -
I wouldn’t be so sure that is actually a BoT member posting.
-
Actually wondered if that was his second account since it showed up.
-
And the obvious answer as to why they wouldn’t is because there are 0 recruits coming next year and the program would be on the literal brink of collapse. Even if the portal strategy works to a limited extent, it will take many years to transition away to something that is more sustainable and palatable to the fanbase.

Could you imagine Alabama keeping their football coach after 3 mediocre seasons and no recruits coming in the next year? Talk about toxic if that happened. Yikes.

This 10000000000000000% this. You hired the man so let him do his job.if you don’t trust him to do his job, then he should have never been hired to begin with. Dont interfere and inject nepotism and politics into it.

If you are the Kathy from the IU BoT, then I and many others don’t want to hear about the culture at IU. That culture has brought us 20ish years of misery as basketball fans. Its upon the board and president to change the culture and actually lead. Anything else is just excuse making and rationalizations.

I don’t think the GM will report to Woodson in the above scenario I laid out. But bc I laid it out it won’t happen. Sorry Dusty fans. Lol -

As a Michigan football fan I can honestly say that IU basketball and Michigan football are about the same when it comes to the fan bases. Neither are as bad as the SEC schools or OSU football. But when the fan bases are fed up they are vocal and bc there are so many fans it’s loud. -

RTZ on the other site still thinks Woody retiring is a possibility. But who knows. if I’m Dolson and my hand was forced for a 4th year with Woodson then I try to have him announce he is retiring after next season. Have one last go with him. Then I go ahead and hire Dusty as the GM for 1 year and announce he will be the HC the following year. This allows him to start recruiting for his first year as HC and help secure a couple multi year portal guys this year to help with the transition. -

This is where things can get toxic. I’m interested to see what happens Sunday and at the BTT. If it’s a chorus of boos raining down and a hostile home atmosphere, that can change things quickly. Having the donors backing is one thing but if the rest do the fanbase has turned and it gets ugly, that will force their hand imo. I wouldn’t want my friends to luv through that. But I’d pay them handsomely to go gold and smoke cigars to get away from it. -

And the Simons have never cared about winning big. Just making money. It’s why the Pacers have been a middling franchise for basically my entire adult life. Good enough to have interest in the Pacers but never a true championship caliber team. -

Honestly, if it’s true they haven’t spoken to him since he signed, then the entire staff needs to go. Thats coaching/recruiting malpractice. Tells me the entire staff is in over their heads. -

Brad isn’t coming. I’m friends with one of his former players. If he gets the coaching itch, he will coach in the NBA. Stevens didn’t like recruiting. And I doubt he would like recruiting with NIL. He didn’t like having to go in and sit with high schoolers and kiss their butts. -
Mike Woodson to return as coach next season

And he will have made the tournament at least 2 more times than Archie. O don’t think Woodson is the worst coach IU has had but I think the names being tossed about are all upgrades (Pearl specifically). it has been brutal for almost 2 decades. Haven’t been able to be consistently good. Just blood here and there. After this massaging of the old guard is done IU needs to go hire an elite coach bc that’s what it takes for consistent success. -

I think Woodson will be here for the duration of his contract now. I think if the Simons and Cooks are going to splash the cash to support him in the portal, they will until he retires in 3 years. I think he will make the tournament moving forward. This was the year to get out and start with a longer term option. Saying all that Dusty will have time to turn somewhere around and prove he is the man. If not, then we dodged a bullet. -

Time will tell. I don’t agree with Archie having good defense. I felt it was a style that the modern game passed by. They gave up too many 3’s for my liking. Same can be said of Woodson but I do think Woodson is a better coach than Archie. But that’s not the debate. -

The GM role is one that programs are going to in football. So athletic departments are moving in that direction. So it will depend on the person hired. Now that the NCAA has suspended any/all NIL investigations, the GM can work with collectives and then directly talk to the players about the total compensation. So I’m assuming it’s going to be more scouting prospects and working finances. -

Good year is top 1-4 in the conference and a top 4/5 seed in the tournament. Then see what happens in the dance. It’s always a crapshoot. Beat Purdue at least once. 1) woody has played 2 bigs all 3 years. I don’t believe he will change. I’d let Reneau transfer and get a rim protector and spread the floor. Just don’t think he will. 2) I think quick athletic guards allow for better defense. This year we didn’t have it and the defense suffered. Year 1 and 2 were much better than this year. X injury isn’t an excuse bc there was an open scholarship and it wasn’t used. 2 years ago there was X and Rob coming off the bench. The D was really good. Last year was X until hurt but JHS filled in and the defense dropped to like 45th in defense. So he needs athletic guards and a rim protector to be a good defense. Woodson is going to try and thread a needle with this strategy. We have no choice but to support it until the end of next year bc a change isn’t coming. -

The goal isn’t to have basketball better than IU football, that’s a low bar. The goal is to be the best basketball program in the Big Ten and to compete with Kansas, UConn, Etc for national titles. So being in better shape than football is still miles away from where the fanbase expectations are for the program. Is there a legitimate plan to reach a final four and national championship under Woodson? If so, does the plan also include a firm foundation for the next coach to come in after Woodson retires to not have to rebuild a roster from scratch because the previous coach didn’t recruit multi year high school players? -

If Pearl or Oats was available, then I would have made a change. I’m not in charge and the decision has been made. Is there a pathway forward to be successful? Yes. Isn’t appealing? No. If the right players stay and the big donors are going to splash the cash (which I fully expect going down this road), then next year could be a good one. At what cost? Depends on who they get this portal season. Need to keep MgBako, Trey, Cupps, McKinney, and Malik. Go get a rim protecting center. An athletic experienced PG. Then the rest need to be multi year transfers and 1-2 high school kids that recommit after a coaching change. It’s can’t be all 1 year rentals from the portal because that means that there is no foundation when Woodson eventually leaves.
