They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Feathery replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Then if the deal is to move one next year, why not announce that Woodson will retire after next season. Then hire Dusty as the “GM” or advisor type role and let him start recruiting a year in advance. I'd also add Luke Yaklich is available to be an assistant. He was the defensive mind behind Beilein taking a step forward at Michigan. I think Dusty needs a defensive mind in staff. -

Oats just signed a massive contract at Bama. Their board of regents have to approve it still but it’s going to make him a top 5 paid coach I believe I heard. So he isn’t leaving. -

If May is the guy and we don’t move this year, there will be another May next year. I also expect Shrews to have a much improved year at ND next year. So he could be available next year. Shaka Smart has excelled at basketball schools and I think could be an option. I know he is from Wisconsin but not Milwaukee and IU has the funds that Marquette can’t match. I’d have him on a list of coaches to call and gauge interest. edit: I’ll also add another year is probably too late for Pearl too. He isn’t getting younger. -

While I think a change needs to be made, I agree with the BoT in that IU needs an established coach for immediate turn around over a mid major coach. Give me Pearl over May. Listened to a Michigan podcast (MGoPodcast) on my way to work this morning. They had May behind coaches from Colorado St and Drake. They seemed skeptical that it took him until year 4 to break out. His year 3 was a drop like Woodsons this year. So they liked him but he was in the tier below their top gettable coaches. It was interesting to listen to them cover the issues with Michigan basketball under Howard and how he won with Beilein’s players. Then when it was his players he couldn’t construct a roster. They thought it was bc in the NBA there is a GM for roster construction and that they recruited players the NBA already identified as prospects. Those players jump early, and they skipped over the players that made them successful, ones who needed to develop and show the NBA they could play at that level. Which is what Beilein recruited. Anyway a lot of similarities between Howard/Michigan and Woodson/IU. -

Thanks. Who was the top 3 candidate that didn’t reciprocate interest? I assume the interested candidates are Pearl and May. -
I asked as well and she hasn’t answered. I still think it’s our recently departed friend with an alt account.

So you’re not a member of the BoT, do you have any connection to the coaching staff/AD/or BoT? If so, what’s the connection?

Are you on the Board of Trustees? I asked the other day and am still waiting for an answer.

I do wonder if Dusty makes a good run of that would change the plan at IU. They can’t have another Brad Stevens situation. -

He can if it’s just more money than others are offering. Who cares if it’s “dirty”. The rules against paying players have always been dirty. -

Just like his alternate account Kathy with a C. I asked very pointed questions and always ignored. -

While you’re definitely not wrong and I agree with you. I see more ppl wanting Woodson gone than Archie. I remember debating people that Archie needed to go after year 3. Woodson is a better coach than Archie. Thats not the standard though, but he isn’t as bad as some make him out to me. I think part of it is the arrogance that comes across. But I personally like a bit of cockiness from my coaches. -

You’re right it is. But there is a way to navigate through it and programs are doing it. Schools/states are suing the NCAA for trying to put in NIL guardrails. Without a collectively bargained agreement there is nothing the NCAA can do. Especially when they try they get sued by the schools they represent. So IU has actually done well in NIL in basketball. I read/heard a year ago or so that IU had the 2nd best NIL program in the conference, behind Illinois. But we aren’t seeing the results. Why? How does NIL translate to winning? Purdue is the class of the Big Ten and they build through high school players that cost less than 1 and done They then DEVELOP their players and supplement them when a gap appears. How did Michigan football win a national title this year without a sign guy or a NIL program to compete with OSU and the SEC? DEVELOPMENT which got 18 guys invited to the combine, a record. Purdue is essentially money balling college basketball, for those of you old enough to remember moneyball and the Oakland A’s. -

I love NIL. Before NIL IU hesitated playing the game that Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, UNC, Etc would play. Oh wait that’s the “blue bloods”. IU has the boosters to be a top program again bc of NIL. It’s just a matter of getting the right structure and people in place to make it happen. The transfer portal and recruiting should be much better than what it has been. And I think IU is about to over pay for players this offseason. Which means it’s an all in situation for Woodson. Boosters will know they are over paying to fix this years mistakes and mismanagement of the roster. But with that overpaying comes more scrutiny from the power brokers behind the program (boosters). In my mind, Michigan fans/boosters have discussed this for football, doing a massive fundraising campaign for NIL. Set up some sort of trust with $100 mil plus in it. Invest that money and then pay NIL through the profits and never touching the initial principle. Then you don’t have to keep going back to the same boosters for more money yearly. If IU did that for basketball they would be a top 5 team yearly bc they would get the top players. When you have alumns worth 1-7 billion dollars, that kind of money is attainable. -

I don’t want the government to be involved in helping the corrupt NCAA. To be able to govern over NIL there needs to be collective bargaining. Which means the players have to be viewed as employees and Vermont basketball players are working towards that now. Once viewed as employees then college players and collectively bargain with the Big Ten/SEC etc and there can be guard rails. Until then it’s unregulated free market capitalism. -

My opinion is the Big Ten isn’t taking Clemson. FSU I could see bc they are close to AAU status. I love Clemson football, highly entertaining, but they are going to be in the SEC. I think the Big Ten will go for FSU and UNC for sure. Then obviously ND and then not sure. I’d love to see Texas A&M to get Texas recruiting footprint. -

Not sure how much people are actually paying attention to this, but they should. The Big Ten and SEC are vastly approaching breaking away from the NCAA, at least for football. Then it’s only a matter time before they take over the tournament (or start a new one with the same requirements)as well. -

There is nothing illegal with NIL anymore. NCAA has stopped any and all NIL investigations after they got sued by the states of Tennessee and Virginia. -
Need an athletic PG who can shoot 35% plus from 3 and beats his man off the dribble. Thats the priority to me. A rim protecting center. 2 wings that can shoot it from range. Then a stretch 4.

I hate when people back down if someone shows aggression. Woodson is 65 years old, he isn’t going to physically harm someone over a question. So ask the tough questions. And if he does sue his @$$ and we get a new coach. Everyone wins. lol -

I want them to ask him what doing his job means? As he said he was coming back to win championships. So he hasn’t been doing his job if that’s the actual goal. -

I’ll be interested what happens if May going to back to back final fours. It would be like a Brad Stevens situation all over again.
