They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
OKHOOSIER replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Will it mean IU isn’t the only P5 school in the country without a high school commit for 2024? If no, then yes. He has a lot of work to do this offseason before I am willing to say he deserves another year. It isn’t that I want Woodson fired so much as it is I want to be relevant and good. If this is some weird aberration and he’s the guy, fine. But we are neither relevant or good, Wins or otherwise. Because what I’ve seen in these wins are adjustments leading to more successful basketball. Adjustments many of us had been asking for since Army and FGCU. It stopped being about this seasons results for me when dropped out of the top-75 and went 1-31 in recruiting. A position it took 5 straight B1G wins to get us back to (Torvik, not Kenpom where we are still 80s). It’s way more nuanced than a run at the end of the season. I have said from the jump, if we had even a top-25 recruiting class, he deserves another year and I would have not even really cared how the end of the season played out. All of this is before you start talking about availability next season if he were to retire or get fired. It is not simply jumping ship in a down year. At least for me, YMMV. -

That was why when all this happened I said Gallo I really didn’t care about. Talk all you want. -

Indebted? No. Does his success have a direct correlation to them? Yes. He averaged 0.0 points the season he went Uber viral for being able to pay off his sisters loans. That doesn’t happen at a place with “chill” fans. So it comes with the reward. That aside, it also didn’t happen in a vacuum, and my guess is Woodys comments spotlighted Leals making people more sensitive— because I agree generally they were pretty mild and Really didn’t bother me much. But I can see where they would. -

Would it have been different for you if he had also said the quiet part out loud? “You guys need to chill, but please don’t stop buying from my NIL store and making sure I make money.” Again, I don’t personally care too much and after some reflection I can almost appreciate his loyalty to Woody whether or not I think it’s misguided. I am just trying to point out that there is a level of hypocrisy in his comments, and that’s probably what annoyed most people. -

I said before I don’t really care that much about Leals comments, it’s whatever he was emotional. Poor taste for someone who profits off fan support. That’s it. The cues were taken from the coach, which is why in some ways I think the vitriol aimed at Leal is somewhat misguided. If people don’t like his comments, the anger should probably be directed at Woody, the leader, not Leal. Just my opinion a few days removed from it. I’ll push back some on the Xavier thing though, for the most part, any grief he’s gotten has been warranted throughout the season. It was not that long ago he pulled a Draymond on someone and Don Fischer was “embarrassed.” He didn’t miss a single game after that incident. But, again, it’s on the leader at least in part. -

Misgivings aside, what a cool moment for Leal. He backed up the talk tonight. I did not have Leal Game Winner on my bingo card. -

Offense aside which is special, Ware's defense around the rim is going to make him a lot of money. Still gets a little too aggressive sometimes but his timing has really gotten better throughout the season -

I agree with you, I was merely interested in the numbers and target. Clearly UL is going to exhaust every route for a proven P5 cat before doing the mid-major thing. I did not say it, but I think this actually points more towards Dusty to OSU instead of UL, which I have said before would be my personal nightmare as a Michigander and IU alum. -

Card Chronicle reporting sources saying they are offering Drew 8-8.5m a year and NIL guarantees. I don't think he leaves Baylor, but if this is the money they are throwing around, it would appear they realize how important this hire is. -

If that happens and woody is still head coach on Sunday I am going to seriously start to question your loyalty to the movement lmao remember nothing screams “sound financial decision” like throwing money at the Indiana University Athletic Department. -

Well if Gallo and Leal got their deals doubled I’d imagine they felt obligated. If someone told me my salary was jumping from 500k to 1mm (made up numbers) I would defend them too lol -

I don’t disagree, and you are probably right. But I’ve seen plenty of c-suite types who were seemingly on great terms for the good of the organization to the public and lower level employees. Behind closed doors? Not so much. The power dynamics with people in these types of roles are just different. I would say more so in a situation such as this where you have a very loud and very impactful consumer base— the fans and alumni. Given the complete radio silence all year, I don’t think it is stretch to say it seems very possible the relationship may be strained.
