I am not a huge fan, but I will say his willingness to burn whatever access he had (or didn't) to go on record with HH and call a spade a spade with the state of the Woody experiment scored some points with me. No idea how well sourced he is or isn't since I have never been a Peegs person beyond casual lurking on the free board.

The Brownell talk sounds like agent nonsense to me trying to garner interest in their client in general. Zero chance Brownell is a candidate JMO. Cronin smoke too most likely. Agents and media people do this crap every big opening, throwing around nonsensical options. It is good for business for Brownell to have stories about being connected to the IU job.

So if Goodman is to be believe the Otz buyout is actually 4Million? Do we actually think we have a shot there? I always figured he was a big time long shot like Oats but at a place with less money. If Otz is actually viable and interested he has to be number 1.

Has Collins considered or been considered for other jobs? Seems like he’s done enough at NW for other schools to kick the tires. Maybe he just likes the job. I can’t remember any noise around him for other openings.

It looks like everyone had another rousing Chris Beard session last night that went absolutely nowhere, so I will say this for Beard to try and nuance the stance: While morally, I am dubious on him and I seriously doubt he would get through a vetting process (he would live in Kentucky somewhere right now if he could, which is probably the most damning evidence), but if he was hired, I would trust that Dolson did his DD and was comfortable with the hire. Because if he melted down somehow, Dolson would also go down with the ship. Is that a risk Dolson is willing to make? No one knows. I don't have to agree with the hire to root for the team. The bottom line is we are not talking 5-10% of the fanbase that would be upset with the hire. Our poll here even showed its closer to 50-50. A Beard hire would fracture the fanbase from the word go, and beyond the incident, that fact would probably give Dolson pause. Winning probably helps cure it, but reality is many-- myself included would be uncomfortable if not disgusted. Call me holier than thou, a *****, judgmental, etc., I care not, and that's all I have to say about that. Not rehashing what happened to make people feel that way. Anyways... The fun part out of the way, from a purely coaching perspective: And before I get flamed by the Beard is literally RMK 2.0 crowd: Yes, he is talented, and I think he would probably win big at IU and make a FF in short order. BUT: He has not IMO, and this is proven by the record whether anyone wants to admit it or not, warranted the weird obsession with him. He was 59-48 in the Big12. He got fired 8 games into the season, and Rodney Fn Terry proceeded to coach the team to 29-9, 2nd place in B12, B12T championship, and an Elite Eight-- Texas didn't exactly implode after Beard got fired. And Terry has shown he is at best an average coach-- Texas was simply loaded in 2022 (credit to Beard's roster construction). His last two seasons at TT were 18-13 and 18-11 respectively. He had a nice 2 year run at TT, and he has improved Ole Miss who is firmly in the middle of the pack in the SEC, which is expected IMO if you are a good coach regardless of "resources"-- not that Ole Miss is some poor backwater school. Is he a slam dunk? Maybe? Likely? I imagine we will find out soon enough, but probably not at IU. If Fitzgerald was reportedly a no by Whitten, I have a hard time believing Beard would be a yes. TL;DR: I will trust Dolson to vet properly regardless the outcome since it is his head too, I doubt he gets considered at all, but Beard would win a bunch of games here.

The problem with Self seems to be similar to the problem with Calipari, and to a lesser extent, the problem with UNC. NIL has removed the institutional advantage these places had. CBB has more parity than it ever has, and that is due in large part to the transfer portal and NIL. Hell, one need only look at CFB, and the fact the B1G has (mostly) closed the talent gap with the SEC since bag men became obsolete. To me, it isn't so much that he lost his fastball, it is that everyone else got Tommy John and has a fastball now too lol. This is why I am less worried about potentially ending up with a McCollum or Cronin type hire as long as the mechanisms (GM, Personnel director, et. al.) for managing the roster and NIL funds are in place for them. Woody has had rosters that should have been easily in the tournament all four years with simply competent coaching. If we get someone who can really coach, we will win a ton of games in this era. It should have been Dusty, but the sky is not falling. Edit: we should probably be happy Woody has been incompetent, because if he could even coach his way out of a paper bag, he 100% would be coming back for year 5.

The fact that it’s paltry just speaks to the fact he was never leaving Michigan and the original buyout wasn’t so he could bolt and save IU money like I tried saying over and over. Based on his own statement, this seems like it was literally just to pay lip service to an extension so the media would stfu about him to IU. Our chance was last season, we blew it, and we’ve got 2000 pages of FMW that says we were all right for thinking it.

Someone will for sure eventually. I think the thing that sticks the most if you’re willing to hand wave the charges, is we’d be benefiting by getting an elite coach who is only “available” because of the incident. Those facts are inexorably linked. He wouldn’t even be a down ballot hot board candidate if he hadn’t been arrested, he’d be at his alma mater.

Cant believe I’m going to say this, but I actually agree with not naming a new coach so Woody can finish the year without being completely humiliated. Now, of course, anyone with any self awareness would have stepped down immediately instead of trying to perpetuate some farce about it being his choice, but Woody is still a human being and IU legend and can be afforded a little grace despite him showing none to the fanbase.

I will say the general media silence has been interesting. It’s like nobody is hearing anything. Also strange there hasn’t been one renegotiated contract from anywhere. Usually there’d be all kinds of agent nonsense leaking out by now on purpose to get guys paid, and I haven’t seen anything. Makes you wonder what’s happening behind the scenes.

I give them the benefit of the doubt even if new, but it’s also entirely possible they just read the board and are just regurgitating Jerry’s stuff.
