2023 SF/PF Mackenzie Mgbako to Texas A&M via Portal
Dave from Dayton replied to Chris007's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I don't think so... I want to see good coaching, a team and a program that represent Indiana University very well, progress towards the end of the season, players that have high basketball IQ, players that share the ball and can make things happen on the court, compete at the highest level in the B1G, compete favorably in the NCAAT, bring home another NCAATC banner, and graduate to become good citizens. -

My pretzel logic ferreting amalgamation bifurcation system is just now about to reach the red zone. Danger, danger!! Almost everyone is overthinking this recruiting. I think. Occam's razor clearly gives us the answer. Just look at the pictures released by the Jayhockers and the Hoosiers. Woody and M&M are glowing up as fam. In the enhanced photos from the blue side, no one is wanting to be seen there. Every single marketing professional knows that the last interview closes successfully the preponderance of the time. The recruiting world has tilted to IU and our coaches. Take it to the bank of the Jordan River in Dunn Meadow. -

Andrew Slater's last comment was that it was down to 2 choices. I'm going with that until there is a public airing otherwise. And confirmed by independent and reputable source(s). ...so what's the latest rumor? -

The gift that keeps on giving?! Oh my! Reminds me of my Navy days. Our submarine put into a bunch of ports on the Atlantic coast. Then we went to Puerto Rico... One guy really shouldn't have put into that port. -

Stuhoo, I chuckle each time I see your new avatar. Not only because of how it got posted on this site. But also in comparison between the body language of Larry Bird and Coach Knight vs MM and Coach Woody in their most recent photo ops...and the surround video. -
Wright State University is located just east of Dayton OH. It is adjacent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the National Museum of the U. S. Air Force. And WSU is 5 miles from my house. Last year WSU ended their season 6th in the Horizon League. Milwaukee beat WSU in the Horizon League quarterfinal game to end their year at 18 - 15. It is the first time in 7 years that the head coach Nagy's teams have not reached 20 wins. The year before they won the Horizon League and beat NC State as their signature win. In the most recent season, WSU men's team struggled rebounding but shot 48% from the field. Wright State basketball: Scott Nagy not used to average seasons (daytondailynews.com) Here is a little about their 5th-year senior guard. Trey Calvin shoots 49% from the field, and scores 20 ppg. Calvin announces plans to return to Wright State in 2023-24 - Wright State University Athletics (wsuraiders.com) WSU redshirted three freshmen last year. Here is a little about that. Wright State basketball: Raiders hope Noel can build on break-out year (daytondailynews.com) They most likely will be better this year. They are not a tall bunch. But they can shoot and are well coached. They have an experienced and capable PG. They likely will compete for the Horizon League championship. I would speculate that they are very capable of getting into the NCAAT.

There's been a huge increase in Instagram and Twitter traffic discussing the positive season that Indiana University is going to have. So it must be true. /s Actually, with Xavier coming back, Reneau, Galloway and others, I'm on board with the roster, too. Pending shooting upgrades, defensive intensity and consistency improvements and creating shots go way up... Would be a good idea to recruit those that can hit free throws. Patiently waiting for news...

7 years is not enough. I went to IU in 1969. Left in December 1970. Entered the military. Went back to IU in 1975. Graduated in 1977. Went to Madison WI and worked. Went to UW in Engineering. Graduated in 1982. That is three decades. I have over 200 undergrad credit hours. 2 BS degrees. Business and Civil and Environmental Engineering. Retired when I was in my mid 50's. There were extenuating circumstances. I keep trying to tell myself. I Don't Wanna Grow Up...Tom Waits Tom Waits - "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" - YouTube I saw Tom Waits and Leon Redbone in Madison in the late 70's. And Jefferson Airplane, BB King, and the Byrds back in 1970, I think...at IU...at the old 10th street stadium next to the main library. Missed the Who at AH...dang. I'm not worried about IU basketball this coming season. It's going to be fun. Put me in coach.

Xavier Johnson granted waiver! Thought that would happen. But great news.

We really do not know what Coach Woody wants relative to this portal transfer season and going into the coming season. Sure, there are indicators. However, because of the greater turnover being caused, in part by the portal itself, by Covid playing years being extended, and because of change of offensive schemes, and new additions, and depletions at the end of next season due to going pro...just lots of changes....I would speculate that the coaches are being very flexible in roster management and construction. There still can be players entering the portal from our team. I think that what we are thinking is not what they coaches are thinking and doing. I think.

Thanks for the post. Interesting information to chew on. Reneau, in his freshman year, was a lot better than I had imagined. Good feel for around the basket. Shot well and made his free throws. But he has to control his fouls. He was great against B1G competition, generally. He just may have a great sophomore year. And with Ware, if Ware hits a decent amount of outside shots and can make things happen, then that tandem will be something we have dreamed of. I like Galloway's energy. But he needs to increase his outside shooting. And he needs to play so that he doesn't charge into the fire and end up getting nothing. And XJ needs to stay healthy and play smart...not react to others getting into his head in a negative way. Having a senior, experienced, really good point guard in XJ has me getting excited for the upcoming season. Relying on Cupps, as a freshman to relieve XJ is not a winner in conference play. IU still has some holes in the roster at the 2 and 3. And depth on the roster is important for the full season to survive the myriad injuries to the starters. I hope IU starts hitting free throws, makes outside shots, creates opportunities, and plays defense better. We need a shot doctor. And basketball players. That's a lot to hope for. I'm not worried about it, though. The coaches and other fans can do that. I'm celebrating that IU basketball is looking like we are on a serious upward trend. Coach Woody says: "I want you!"

And there was A J Moye and 'The Block' on Carlos Boozer in the upset of Duke in the NCAAT in Rupp in 2002! I was there! (1) Watch | Facebook Well, he did have, what, a 44" vertical jump.

We do have a couple of spots with decent NIL opportunities. However, good players that can score can be picky and take their time. Maybe some would rather be in the southeast in the Raleigh - Durham area or singing Rocky Top. Not me. I'd much rather be in the rust belt or corn fields, freezing in winter in a fly-over state somewhere in the Midwest. At least in B-town, we can swim in quarries in the summer, go to Brown County State Park and crawl into caves. And as far as professional sports, we have the Pacers and the Colts! And our success in the last few decades is written in dust up in the balcony of SSAH. As a potential recruit, I would be interested in the coaching staff, the fit, and the potential growth. Some might just be interested in personal connections and family accessibility. The league, method of play, location, facilities, media, costs (NILand scholarships), and education are part of the fit. Coach Woody asked a potential new, young-gifted recruit, "What's your special talent?" Recruit: "Hindsight!" Coach: "That's not going to help us at all" Recruit: "Yes, I can see that now"

This last season, it seemed to me, that the lack of good outside shooting, lack of playmaking perimeter guards and wings, lack of good defense at times, lack of roster depth exposed by injuries to our starters all contributed to the end result. We actually ended up generally where many of us thought or predicted at the start of the season. It is so very important to have a point guard that gets the offense started quickly. Defense is paramount, too. We really need sharpshooters and people that can create...and a better defense. Not to mention players that go after loose balls. What I do not understand about recruiting is why do we go after wings that do not shoot really well from outside or at the line... Cupps is a fine addition imho. From the linked article: Cupps scored 16 points on 7-for-14 shooting, 2-for-4 from 3-point range, with seven assists, six rebounds and zero turnovers. He said the style of play was definitely different from the United States. Every player could pass and shoot, and there was constant screening, moving and cutting, with little focus on isolation basketball. Chris Ledlum - Harvard Transfer to Tennessee -- Wait, Make That St. John's
Dave from Dayton replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Yeah! If Dave isn't, he should be. I haven't maintained a steady high since February 1971. I wanted to be able to clearly enjoy RMK being at IU...and IU basketball teams winning banners. (And getting an education and retaining the studies, and getting on in life for me, was incompatible with being high.) The last 2 plus decades have been tough being sober, mostly...well some. And Josh is just miffed that I finished waaay ahead of him in the Prediction Leaguel -

LOCATED! The Holy Grail of IUBB Photos
Dave from Dayton replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We were staying in Spring Mill State Park at the time. The recession had taken down a bunch of restaurants and eating out was slim pickings. Toured the casino and resort. Checked out antiques/flea markets and caves. I really enjoyed a good sandwich and beer at 33 Brick Street. However, the pertinent issue was about the wonderful Bird memorabilia. Multiple NBA POY and team awards and trophies, and college awards just too numerous to list. Phenomenal! I am curious if the owner responded to the photo search inquiry. -
