    Medical - Summer Work

I second what HH just posted. Distant family member just entered the job market as patient care assistant or some such here in Dayton OH. Entry level position...at a large hospital. Not even sure if she has HS diploma...or much work experience. Flexible hours... I also have heard that assisted living areas are seeking workers. Health insurance companies are also seeking workers. Doctor's offices and dental care offices are looking for summer receptionists...possibly. Good luck.
  2. I have no inside information. I was not privy to discussions and directions between the Athletic Department or the administration and Archie Miller. My only sources of information were available in the media and online. It seemed to me that in Tom Crean's last year or two, the recruiting and team building had fallen apart. He was fired in spite of having two highly ranked teams and recognition in the media as being coach of the year twice. Regardless, he did not get his teams into the elite eight and missed the NCAAT 5 years of 9. He had been criticized for poor team fundamentals, poor defense, turnovers, arrests of players, poor recruiting of Indiana high school players, transfers, and overhype. And Indiana lost to Purdue twice in one season. Welcome Archie Miller. It is my opinion and only that...Coach Miller was to improve the academic progress rate, recruit Indiana high schools first, and once a scholarship is awarded then that student has a guaranteed spot until graduation. Now, Archie Miller, go forth and win. And pay no attention to the fact that Sean Miller was under FBI investigation for recruiting violations, etc. Archie Miler's pack line defense and defense first were shocking to the players, the fans, the media after Tom Crean's fly to the hoop damn the turnovers full speed ahead faster and don't worry about defense we will outscore the opponents. Now do not clean house, Archie, the Student Bill of Rights makes clear you cannot do that. If there is a fight in the locker room you cannot get the player(s) to transfer that are a disruption. Plus that would hurt the APR. And you cannot bring in your recruited PG. That would be unsportsmanlike to the University of Dayton. It just isn't done at Indiana. Y'know. We are squeaky clean, right? By the way, who is out there recruiting for Indiana's pack line defense? That's an easy sell. Why did Archie Miller not use all of IU's scholarships? Maybe he was waiting for better recruits or transfers to show up. Maybe he was not willing to just fill positions because he couldn't then get them to transfer and it would hurt the APR. I do not know. Clearly, Archie Miller was in over his head. Clearly, to me, the administration placed Archie Miller in position to fail. It was literally and figuratively a no win situation. At Dayton, Archie Miller's team...one had only 7 or 8 scholarship players....and won the Horizon League. A team effort based entirely on pack line defense and sharing the ball. They were ball players on those teams. At IU it was a disaster. Until the 3rd year...maybe...well, no...Covid. No improvement. Bye bye, Archie. To put a positive spin on a very negative post...the administration is supporting Coach Woody...big time. Go forth and recruit and hang a new NCAAT Championship banner! I was surprised and hopeful when Archie Miller was hired. He had to go. Glad the administration learned from all of it...and recognized a changing basketball game.
  3. This is what Parrish wrote a couple of years ago for CBSSports about firing Archie Miller and the $10 million 'philanthropic' donation by a mega-rich donor: An Indiana booster's $10 million for a new coach shows money talks, but when players walk, is it worth it? - CBSSports.com He repeatedly says that he does not care. And then keeps lobbing negatives about what IU has done and will do. He keeps asking why Archie failed when Archie obviously is a great coach and would be back into the NCAAT by 2023. He wonders and whines about IU probably settling for a lessor coach and the players going into the portal...and he gives Al Durham, Armaan Franklin and Race Thompson as examples. Obviously, he says, leaving the cupboard bare for the next poor coach. He's probably not happy because his undies got up in a bunch. Because those speculations and negative innuendoes were waaaaay off and premature. Obviously, IU should hang on to Archie because..words...like we should just keep on failing to make the east coasters happy. Kind of like Michigan with Harbaugh. Now IU is going to be back among the blue chips at the end of the season. Being here in Dayton and having followed Archie Miler's coaching of the University of Dayton Flyers, I wanted him to succeed at IU. For lots of reasons...not just because it's Indiana. I think that he was not supported like Woody is being supported. He also was not charismatic, but his style worked very well in Dayton. He had certain restrictions on recruiting imposed by the administration. Woody does not have those restrictions. I was surprised when IU picked Archie Miller. I thought that they could have him on the long list. He was an up and comer. But, that is a big jump. But those kind of big jumps are made. And I got on board and said in many posts here that he just might do the trick. I was not happy that IU did not let him bring his PG in year one. IU and Archie never recovered from that decision. Crean left the cupboard bare for the next coach..Archie Miller. Archie Miller did not leave the cupboard bare for the next coach...Woody. And Woody accomplished quite the magic trick when he kept Trayce & Co. at IU. I think that Parrish was doing his Dakich impression. Just make waves and get clicks. Media does that nowadays in lieu of reporting they like to 'make the news'. Sucks bigly. And to clear the air all of the way, I wonder how much of the $10 million actually got paid or will be paid to Archie Miller. And to further clear the air, I am not the mega donor that gave $10 million dollars to IU. Just saying.

    Coffee Geek-ery

If I had a roaster: Daterra Sweet Blue RFA Green Coffee Beans - Coffee Bean Corral Once you get into this site, check out the details on this bean and especially the comments. I'd love to roast it just past the 2nd crack. It may persuade me into getting a roaster. hmmm....(insert lightbulb going on here...) Thanks for the backyard compliments. We have 1/2 an acre on a cul-de-sac. Property is shaped like a traditional kite. House is situated close to the street...kind of. That makes the backyard huge. We back up to a couple of houses with decent-sized backyards. But one large back portion of our yard backs up to a neighborhood green space. Both large grass areas and a dense tree portion all of which extends more than a quarter mile. We've had all sorts of wildlife back there: deer; hawks; red fox; you name it...no bears or big cats, yet. In the winter people skinny ski...summer they play football or frisbee...I can hit my golf 3 wood and not hold back. Got a small vegetable and herb garden going. Know the species of all 300 types of plants, trees, shrubs and flowers around the yard. Cut my own firewood. And the wife thinks that shrubs are mobile. "Just pop that bush out and put it somewhere else and plant this yellow rose bush there." Yes, sure.....mumble...bad back...headache...hmmm... My magnolia tree...

    Coffee Geek-ery

Since I do not roast my beans, I have some leading questions about roasting. I do not enjoy dark roasts as much as medium roasts. So, if I did roast green coffee beans, that would be to maybe 30 seconds after the last pop of the first crack. But I really would like to push that into just starting the second crack...maybe. I think it would be fun and interesting to taste the difference between the roasts. In your latter post about tips...I searched quite a few sites...easily over 50...and have ordered online at least a dozen which resulted in finding a favorite from Red Bird Roasters. What is weird is that the first bag was wonderful. Then, the second bag ordered 4 months later was not as tasty. Both were delivered to my house priority mail USPS within 3 days of roasting...for $5 shipping for the small bag. Sure, I could get a big bag shipped free...but, I like to sample around. And resample...before buying bulk. Tried one roaster in FL that was recommended in this thread, I think, but was not enamored with the product. My go to coffee from a grocery was a Starbuck's product entitled Brazil medium roast. Great chocolate notes. But it was discontinued. Possibly because of fair trade issues. And I would much prefer not going to a grocery store and buying a bean that was roasted 4 months ago. Especially a big chain like Starbucks gives me a nervous tic...for reasons. I reflect on my Navy days...drinking coffee from huge industrial urns 15 hours after it was brewed. Anything to stay awake at 3 in the morning. But, compared to my father-in-law, sleeping in a foxhole on Iwo Jima and the cook would send over hot coffee and fresh donuts. The highlight of his service, I think. At least those weren't instant coffees.

Looking for a less expensive option. I don't roast. I buy only whole bean, usually medium roast. Just drip. Not a fan of k cups. Best coffee I've had recently is Brazil Sweet Blue from Red Bird in Colorado. They ship immediately after roasting. Tried a French press...not my cup of tea. Grind my own. Simple burr grinder. If you take it darker, it has lots of semi-sweet chocolate notes. Medium is more caramel and chocolate. I drink it black. I don't really enjoy fruity coffees. There's a lot of coffee shops around. Pettibone, across from the National Museum of the Air Force is really good. I try to stay decaffeinated in the afternoon. But sometimes will share a mocha-caramel latte with the other half if our motors are running low while exploring somewhere. If on a veranda overlooking water and enjoying a breeze...late afternoon. It's not coffee I would be having. I like my coffee, in the morning, as the sun rises, on my patio, enjoying the birds chirping and the silent world. Brazil Sweet Blue Coffee - Red Bird Coffee

Trayce Jackson-Davis - Golden State Warriors

Yes. I agree. "Different" it is. But "extremely" different is different than just merely different. TJD's role was to be inside. It was up to others to shoot from out. I am not taking an issue with the strategy. So, the final word is that TJD was spectacular at IU. We were very lucky to have him on the team. For sure. But since he never ever displayed a 3-point shot in a game before this, I am stunned. His stat line shows 0% his senior season at IU. And in the NBA tryout he hits a surprising 75% at first, then ends up hitting at above 45%... different than 0%...it is. Does this raise his prospects in the draft? Tell me that the evaluators have already taken his 3-point display as just an interesting thing. I don't feel like that is so. It is new. sure, he had the potential. This looks like he is ahead of the potential curve. And a great opportunity for him and his future team. Moreso after his 3-point tryout.

Trayce Jackson-Davis - Golden State Warriors

    TJD shot 9 of 12 3-pointers?! Speechless...
  9. Awesome thread, you're right. Shows just a bit of Hoosier Hysteria and fan support for the team and coaches. But, the thread would have been a lot more interesting if certain people hadn't kept, well you know. Here's looking at Chris006.9, Stun Who?, some older guy, Race t3, Just Joshing... Getting this back on topic: Bourbon, Pizza, the color of the lockers, 76 degree days in spring on campus, Al Durham's productivity 2 years after his candy stripe days, live music, back in the good old days vs social media activity as a leading indicator, leaks, blue bloods, hype, Little 500, you talkin' to me?, the sky is falling, a sixth NC banner, apple pie and hot sauce... A tip of the ole cream and crimson toupee to Mackenzie Mgbako and his family! Welcome, and thanks for becoming Hoosiers. And to those I alluded to above...thank you all and to the posters/fans for the great information, moderating and this site.

    NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

Yeah. Good points, all. But, I was wondering...maybe, we can't get everything. : )

    NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

We need a combo guard/wing that can play at the 1, 2 and 3. He has to hit 3 or 4 3-pointers a game at a clip of 40% or better. Gotta make his own shots and get multiple assists. Be able to score at many levels and is a team player. Has to be talented with a quick step and be able to rebound and block out. Hits free throws at above 85%. Speaks and communicates well...and represents Indiana University in a first-class manner. He has to have more than one year of eligibility remaining. Did I miss something? Oh, yes. I'm not available. But let's discuss the NIL opportunities that are available.
  12. I agree with Josh, too. There are some...ahem...rather positive comments in the above-linked article. Such as: "Massive talent upgrade" "legitimate contender" "no ceiling" "apt comparison is Jared Jefferies" "frontline of Ware, Mgbako and Reneau is more versatile than Jackson-Davis, Thompson and Kopp" "The environment at Indiana is unmatched" Not quite enough overhype by the SI writer who once was working for the IndyStar...but more superlatives would be appreciated like: Hoosiers are Hysterical ...or the Slam Fam...or Woody is the new Wizard of the Cornfields...or...hang on for your Crimson Ride... or ... Multiple Banners Up ... or...He's surpassed Archie... (well, he actually said something like that...) Was a fun read for a SI article.
  13. There is an old saying that apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze. I just read that cheese on apple pie probably originated in England back in the 1700's when dairy-based cream sauces were used on apple pie. It may have morphed to cheddar or other cheese slices. Makes sense to me because of the lack of the cost and effort to make ice cream in earlier times. Those of us that have read a little history have come to realize that cheese after dessert is considered a luxury in some places. Makes sense to combine cheese and apple pie together with that perspective. And it lasts better on the pie on the sideboard than ice cream. In the south, some would likely be appalled using cheese on hot apple pie instead of ice cream. Well, that may be in today's world. Not likely as much if one sets the Waybac Machine to the 1840's. Cheese slices and apple slices as part of a snack or part of lunch just is virtually a tradition in places. If you never had cheddar cheese fondue with apple slices then you have missed out. That and some Rose or Port or Rhum from St. Marteen. I know of a farming family west of Richmond IN that always offer cheese on apple pie. And ask servers in Haggarstown at the buffet if they serve it that way. Personally, I don't do cheese on apple pie. Give me a scoop of vanilla or Caramel swirl on that warm slice of pie.
  14. Drumroll please. And a double Elijah Craig select bourbon on one rock.
  15. It's Indiana!!! (I hope.)
  16. Hey, I was mostly talking about golf. And after 5 strokes, well, I'm done with that... I was in a twosome at Panther Woods in Vero Beach and hit a worm burner off of the first tee. Sam Snead, the course pro emeritus was behind us. He said to me "Your look up is only exceeded by your lunge." I don't know what that means. But, if it's good, it's me!
  17. I'm not into any game that I have to count every stroke.
  18. Kansas is the benchmark and the program to beat. IU was the last visit and family loved it. My crystal ball has been updated. The answer is: Duke...
  19. Beer brats with sauteed onions, beer, and bell peppers and cold beer, and your choice of ketchup, spicy mustard, pickle relish and maybe drag it through the other condiments, and beer. Or if in NJ on the boardwalk...Italian sausage and beer. (Guaranteed cure for a hangover. Well, if you smoke a little splif...which I don't.)
  20. Not about Chick-fil-A. But chicken pot pie are three of my favorite things. And I'm putting my money on MM coming to Indiana! Because of Coach Woody and others. Coach What's his name in KS is so yesterday's news. Hey has MM been to Hoosier Hysteria? He did have an earlier visit, didn't he?
  21. No I was not countering your whole post about social media. In fact, I actually agree that recruits and players are very active in social media and it means a lot. I was not clear in what I was responding to. Sorry about that. I was only intending to respond to the last phrase in the post which was "... next time a big name player enters the transfer portal or a top recruit decommits we should watch the following count across Twitter and Instagram. " And I meant my response to mean that imho there are better things to look for. For example, I have been watching Gabe Cupps' high school progress and have hopes and believe that he does very well. He is from my backyard in Ohio, y'know. I don't mean to diss your thoughts. I hope MM or someone like him joins the team soon. The window to enter the transfer portal ends today. Those in the portal can join a team later if they so choose. That's what I follow. I still think that IU has a great chance to land MM. And IU would be a great choice for him and his fam.
  22. I don't think so... I want to see good coaching, a team and a program that represent Indiana University very well, progress towards the end of the season, players that have high basketball IQ, players that share the ball and can make things happen on the court, compete at the highest level in the B1G, compete favorably in the NCAAT, bring home another NCAATC banner, and graduate to become good citizens.
  23. My pretzel logic ferreting amalgamation bifurcation system is just now about to reach the red zone. Danger, danger!! Almost everyone is overthinking this recruiting. I think. Occam's razor clearly gives us the answer. Just look at the pictures released by the Jayhockers and the Hoosiers. Woody and M&M are glowing up as fam. In the enhanced photos from the blue side, no one is wanting to be seen there. Every single marketing professional knows that the last interview closes successfully the preponderance of the time. The recruiting world has tilted to IU and our coaches. Take it to the bank of the Jordan River in Dunn Meadow.
  24. Andrew Slater's last comment was that it was down to 2 choices. I'm going with that until there is a public airing otherwise. And confirmed by independent and reputable source(s). ...so what's the latest rumor?
