2024 General Recruiting Thread (BBall)
Dave from Dayton replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Clearly, trying to compare Crean to Woodson for being a college coach is apples to oranges to say the least. Looking back at Marquette with Crean...there is Wade. Crean's hype did not translate to on court performance. He was lucky to parley Wade as his ability to recruit. He sold but could not sustain anything. Look at the cupboard Crean left for Archie Miller. And look at what Crean has done since. Woodson has only been at IU 3 years. How can one compare Woodson's 3 years to Crean's many? I say that there are a lot of variables in recruiting, developing players, getting staff, scouting teams, planning game strategies, adjustments, leadership, scholarship, defense, offense, flexibility, planning for the future, public speaking and PR. Crean recruited anyone who made eye contact. He was lucky to get Cody Zeller. He was not well received by the High School coaches in Indiana. Crean thought offense should go faster and faster. He didn't learn to adjust. Defense was less important. Woodson went after the top recruits. He doesn't come across as someone who is open to suggestions...but he does adjust belatedly. His players did get better as a team. Mgbako, Ware Reneau, others improved. One cannot take that away from Woody. Will he learn to recruit and use the portal more effectively? I have no idea what Woodson would be doing after 6 or 7 years. I was ready for Dolson to pull the plug on Woodson. However, there was potentially worse risk and downside ramifications about starting from scratch, again, for IU. Unless IU had locked in a phenomenal and experienced college basketball coach prospect. I want to see Woodson pulling a rabbit out of his hat next season. Will he? Will the team? Will the portal? I have no idea. Watch McNeeley stay with IU after Woodson recruits him, again. Watch those players at IU stay. Yeah? I don't know. -

Not surprised that Woody is to be back. I want Ware to be at Indiana next year...and playing better. I wonder what the odds are. But if he goes pro, then that would help IU recruit. IU will need a better defender in the middle than Reneau next year. We need a point guard that has some size. We need shooters. We need basketball players that can make plays and create. We need experience. We need Mgbako to get better. We need the team to play like a team before the Big Ten starts every year. We need the IU's use of the NIL to step up...like some have said. We need someone on the bench that can help Woody maximize matchups and design plays. Blocking out and getting rebounds would be nice. As would moving feet and not reaching in on defense. Getting into the NCAAT every single year is a requirement. So is having world class guards. Competing at the top of the Big Ten year in and year out is a good goal. Making a huge run in the NCAAT every 4 years is a requirement. Not churning head coaches every few years would be advantageous. In other words, I have nothing new to add. And I always cheer for IU to win. I can't do otherwise. -

Defense has been decent. Once IU guards stopped getting trapped by 2 defenders at the point... Hitting 3's. Keep playing to win. Do not go into that dreaded slow down game. -

Some say that Archie Miller was the flavor of the month. But that does undersell what he had as a resume...albeit at a mid-major. He took over a Dayton Flyer team that had an empty cupboard. His predecessor, Brian Gregory, would have been run out of town if he hadn't gone elsewhere. Miller's. 688 win percentage (139-63) ranks second in Dayton history in the NCAA Tournament era (post 1939) after legendary Don Donoher. Anthoney Grant is doing well at Dayton since Archie Miller left for IU. But he, as yet, has not taken Dayton to the NCAAT. Miller spent time at several programs as an assistant coach, spending a season at Western Kentucky (2003–04), two at NC State (2004–2006), one at Arizona State (2006–07) under former coach Herb Sendek, two at Ohio State (2007–09) under Thad Matta, and two at Arizona (2009–11) under his brother Sean.[4] While at Arizona, Miller shined as a top recruiter, helping secure Arizona's top 10 recruiting class for 2011 recruits. He also excelled as a game strategist and designed the Wildcats' upset of eighth-ranked Texas to get them to the Sweet 16.[5] University of Dayton (2011–2017)[edit] Miller became the head coach of the Dayton Flyers men's basketball team in 2011 and turned around a program that had back-to-back disappointing seasons.[4] His first season with Dayton saw Miller take the school to 20 wins. In his third year, 2014, he had the Flyers in the Elite Eight with 26 wins; to get there, Dayton upset three higher seeded teams. After the Elite Eight run in 2014, Miller faced replacing three starters and four seniors from that team. Despite having a depleted roster featuring just six players who were recruited to Dayton and no active player taller than 6-foot-6, Miller led his Flyers to a 27–9 overall record and to the third round of the 2015 NCAA tournament.[2] In the following three seasons, Miller averaged over 25 wins and each year coached the team made to the NCAA tournament. The latter two the Flyers also earned regular season Atlantic 10 champion titles.[6] Per Wiki. Ohio State wanted him. Others wanted him. But something happened and he did not transfer his success at Dayton to IU. I had Archie Miller somewhere below 5 in my list of potential IU HC candidates at the time. I liked Archie Miler here at Dayton. One year he had 7 scholarship players and won the conference title and did decently in the NCAAT. He never got the players at IU. Point guards are critical. IU has struggled getting a good one for years, except for Yogi's freshman year...and he was a freshman. And his pack line defense sucked at IU. But in all honesty it worked at Dayton because he had players that bought into it, were long, gave effort, and played like a team. At IU, the team went the other way. Partly because of...ahem...locker-room issues and the administration's lack of support. Cure those few things, which I believe IU has to some extent, and Dusty May could get an assist that Archie Miller never did at IU. Do I feel strongly about it? Yeah. Did Archie Miller need to be gone. Yeah. I just hope that someday soon, IU puts a good plan into place for winning at IU. Not saying we don't have one. (Cough, cough.) I just don't see it. And if I don't see it... -

People always asked me if I played basketball because I was so very tall. I started responding: Do you play mini-golf?

Yeah, that could be it, too. When I learned what attorneys really are involved with...I wondered why in the heck would anyone really want to do that for a living or calling. Handling other people's legal problems...they have to be kidding me. But, then again, these are youngish people playing basketball and growing up. My father-in-law would always say..."They are young. What do they know?" He was joking...and not joking.

Lots of people may tend to oversimplify all of the related issues to unionization. Categorization of them vs. us is not the right way to look at this. I am not saying anyone on this site is doing that. It does come down to how we see an organization controlling and not respecting the workers vs. large amounts of dollars being centralized in order to do large investments and 'great' works and the resultant will to power (ie controlling others). What is really important is to listen with respect to what the others are saying. I am not saying to agree. Just try to understand their perspective. Why are they saying and doing something differently? What is the real reason? It may not even be what they are saying. They just may be...hurting, frustrated or struggling with coping. The answer usually is to reach out and truly partner. We are in this together.

I finally figured it out. Indiana University men's basketball players years ago voted to unionize. They sometimes go on strike during games. They went on strike back when our head coach was making impermissible calls and contact and Dan D became acting HC. They went on strike by not playing defense for years with Crean. Need I explain the Archie years? They went on strike this season at Auburn.... /snark Just like Dartmouth: A first in college sports: Dartmouth men's basketball votes to unionize : NPR

I am thrilled that IU won on the road in the Big Ten. Period. Mike Woodson was one hell of a ball player at IU. He has given his all to coach at IU and to help. I am not happy about the losses. I'm sure that he is not either. Time has come today Young hearts can go their way Can't put it off another day They think we don't listen anyway Time has come today - Chambers Brothers -

Well, I actually predicted a win early on. But second guessed the team. Thought seriously about changing my prediction to a loss. Actually posted that I thought they would lose. But didn't change it on the prediction thread. Very seldom do I change. When I do, I am proved wrong. Tip of the hat to Xavier for playing in a complementary role. Tip of the hat to the team. Ware had to be under the weather the first half. The second half was out freaking standing! Road win in the Big Ten. Take that to the bank. Win out, guys! -
