Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

Go Fund Me page is up! Please contribute to the IU fans want Brad Stevens fund (administered by yours truly). Or to the New NC Banner in Assembly Hall in Bloomington fund (also administered by guess who?). Or to the IU Alumni Pilgrimage to the Greek Islands (for 2) During the NCAAT Finals (quietly administered by D@D). Take your pick. Get a replica of an autographed ticket to the Final Four with every contribution over $10,000. PS: Heard that Archie Miller is going to be the new head coach for Duke. Coach K is announcing retirement this week. Wow, this bourbon is goooood! But, seriously folks...Brad Stevens is off of the table. -
I hadn't heard that about Archie. Actually heard the opposite. That Archie was realistic and no nonsense. The used car salesman or snake oil salesman talk was about Crean. Not that he lied. Just that he did hype a lot and was more than flamboyant. And he was all over the place in his delivery.

Dave from Dayton replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I am a huge IU basketball fan. After graduation from IU, I went to Madison Wisconsin and worked for a few years. Then took engineering at UW-Madison. Followed IU basketball and football and cheered for IU! Always have, always will. But, I cheered for UW football and hockey, too. Had season tickets to both. When going head to head with IU I always cheer for IU. I cheer for the Packers, too. Then went to Dayton Ohio for a job. Cheer on University of Dayton basketball and Wright State. Daughters went to Bowling Green State north of here while Dakich was coach. That is another story. When I was 19 and after freshman year at IU-B, I joined the Navy. From Chicago boot, and CT and VA and up and down the east coast and overseas, I followed IU basketball. And watched with interest Duke, NC, NC St., CT etc. Even went to a Nebraska vs Army game at West Point. Fun until kickoff. Final score Nebraska 77 - 7. Have family that went to Harvard. One is a teacher in Princeton NJ. I do not cheer for the Patriots. I can understand that people that have lived up there in Boston could get excited for that franchise. U Mass, too. Brad Stevens is gaining life experiences and changing. I can understand why he would adopt and begin to love to follow new sports teams. Doesn't seem strange to me. I follow the Bengals and the Reds. Not too exciting recently. I watch the Colts but not serious about them. They started after I left Indiana. Used to watch St. Louis Cardinals. Pro sports is ok. College sports is crazy! I cheer for all B1G teams except Purdon't. Doesn't mean that he is cutting off ties and forgetting his roots either. He kind of said that. -

The idea and possibility that Brad Stevens would leave the Celtics to come to Indiana is not thought to be preposterous by more than a few fans. I perceived that it was possible. I believed that it was possible. Here are a few reasons why. There are instances of coaches and players leaving the pros and going to universities to coach. Brad Stevens gave what could be interpreted as a non-denial denial earlier this week. I have lived in CT and VA and Madison WI and visited 47 states in the USA and I love the midwest. Indiana University basketball may have been mismanaged for 25 years but if one really understands one's boss (the AD) then that says a lot and can overcome the baggage of the previous ADs and IU mismanagement. I do not fall for conspiracies. I do not chase rumors. I say show me. I am a professional engineer with a business/finance degree and I think that Brad Stevens was likely approached by Dolson or someone representing him. Brad Stevens may have indicated some interest in the job. The negotiations had taken place. Stevens, since has declined to contract for the IUHC position. Seems plausible to me. Yeah, there were a lot of rumors floating around. Too numerous to count... Seemed there were 3 halfway decent and somewhat reliable sources. I wouldn't have bet a dollar on it. But it was possible. -

I hear what you are saying about search firms. However, they only do what they are contracted to do. One may think that they take the place of the school in all decisions. That is likely not typical use of such firms. Some may just negotiate after the AD tells them the single candidate. For instance, behind the scenes contact to inquire levels of interest. Some may vet one or more candidates. Some may have other challenges and duties assigned. None of them would likely make any selection. They simply make recommendations and justify them to the AD. I have no problem with IU using professional services to augment the AD and his staff in performing such duties. The responsibility for doing the search, background vetting, culling and selection is still the responsibility of the AD. -
Thanks Coach Miller
Dave from Dayton replied to Ghost of Rick Majerus's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I, too, wish Coach Miller the best in future endeavors. Being an IU alum and fan that has been living in Dayton for a long time...I have followed Coach Miller at UD and IU. When CTC left and Miller was announced as HC @ IU I was somewhat surprised but pleased. He had turned UD around and had significant successes. Thought it would be a big step up. Hoping that he would bring IU into competing at the top of the B1G and making runs in the NCAAT. I knew that he was tough but fair, intense but motivating, blessed with the rare gift of being able to relate to, and bring the best out of, players with a combination of both good cop and bad. He was clean, professional, and dedicated. He could develop players, recruit well, and was results oriented. He knew how to work hard and scrap with vigor to get to one's goal. His teams played like teams should...sharing and never giving up. Miller really got the short end of the stick at IU. Not saying that it wasn't time to change coaches, just saying that IU-DL posting above is more true than most fans seem to see. Bon Voyage Coach Miller! Thanks and good luck. May you always have a great PG on your team. -

My best friend over here in Ohio is beside himself. I calmly asked him if he thought Brad Stevens will announce being the new HC at IU. Feel the glare? Feels warm to me. OSu threw that game away again and again. Waiting from Brad. Breaking out the bourbon. The rest of my posts may wander a bit. -

This will end favorably very soon. There is no way, in my opinion, that the Celtics will keep CBFS on salary as HC after he shows that one foot is out of the door. -

Bought some decent bourbon yesterday. Gonna crack it regardless. Because, IU is going to welcome Brad Stevens as the new head coach. It is a done deal says others. Just figuring out how to exit and when over there in Bean Town. Watching OSU fumble it away. Texas Tech looked lots better in the 2nd half. Enjoyed Izzo giving the hairy eyeball to players after MSU's loss yesterday. Lots of discussions on Celtic's fan forums about pros and cons of Brad Stevens' coaching job of the Celtics. Go IU! New drinking game...take a sip every time there is a turnover in a game and when you read an interesting tidbit about Brad Stevens. Been to that resort in Boca. InLaws stayed there. I couldn't. Stayed in a place called the Ventura just south of it. -

Just left there. Was across from Lisa's. Short walk to Johns Pass. I am going to take a break from holding my breath for the PR on CBFS. -

True, he did recruit fairly well. Except that the injuries and the growth of the other B1G teams passed IU by. That and Archie must get a great PG to work well. RP was good as a freshman but due to injuries he never seemed to recover fully. So Archie's PG didn't happen and Archie did not recruit a backup. Shooters either didn't shoot or couldn't hit. Time for a change. And I really loved Archie here in Dayton. Go get Brad. -

I am not worried. But I am pissed off about IU not being in the tourney. And, I still do not "get" why Archie Miller couldn't recruit at IU. He did very well at Dayton. I hope that he will do well in his career. And I'm so very glad that IU seems to be closing on Brad Stevens. T minus 23 minutes and counting. Then the big announcement: Brad Stevens to IU! (I have no idea of the timeline for the announcement.) -

Hi. I live just north of the Air Force Museum. From PA to KY to IL to Evansville IN...Bosse HS. IU 77 UW 82. Dayton OH since. Btw Bills Donuts are very good. But Donut Bank in Evansville beats Bills. One of the only reasons to visit Evansville. The sequence I envision is the news starts to break on Brad Stevens or Plan B. Coach will tell his entourage and team and employer. Word gets out quickly. Then Press Releases from the old employer and IU AD. Then within days the press conference. Nothing new this AM. The three main sources of information haven't changed information in 12 hours. It is still thought to be Brad Stevens. No timetable. Go IU! -

Maybe that. Could be Monopoly too. Almost all the talk is about Brad Stevens, $49 million... Seems he has Boardwalk, Park Place and the greens and the railroads all sewn up. -

Not only that... It also implies to me that the work is in progress. That means that they have already made contact with the prospective coach and that there is enough certainty of a positive outcome that the AD knows that there will be a short period between the above statement and the PR. Process could also mean that the AD might be still searching for the right coach. But, the implication of a short time means to me that they are wrapping up the loose ends. -

I'm thinking and remembering that the last few coaching hires by IU involved that Indy Law firm that has specialists in the area of vetting and negotiating quietly and behind the scenes. The benefits are obvious. The AD can say he has not met with the prospective coach. And the prospective coach may say that he has not met with anyone from the AD's office. Furthermore, I really do not see boosters meeting with Brad Stevens to discuss these matters. Not prior to any contract being finalized. -

Hit all. Long time poster from Rivals and more recently HSN. IU? I'm Fine and Air Ball here. Adding my one cent opinion. With no inside info I have been an IU fan since the late 60's. Evansville Bosse '69, Indiana Business/Finance 1977 (undefeated!), UW=Madison Civil/Environ. Engineering '82...Dayton since. Worked in Aviation for 2 decades. All I have to say about flight tracking is that those almost never track the right people. One never knows who is negotiating and where they meet. If Dolson and Stevens really do meet it will be for the press conference. I am more interested in the other sources... By the way: Welcome to Indiana University - Bloomington...Head Coach Brad Stevens! Just had to get that off of my chest. Not that I know anything. Having watched Archie Miller here in Dayton...and having gone to a number of UD games, I am floored that he didn't have some success at Indiana. Oh well. IU had to pull the plug. Go IU! -
Thoughts on Crowd Booing CTC/ Players?
Dave from Dayton replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
My wife and I, sitting at home, both were not happy with this substitution. I yelled "Noooo!" I believe that booing one's own coach or players is in bad taste and bad form. But, sometimes it may be appropriate. Ghandi reminded us that nonviolent opposition to authority may be an appropriate response at times. It may be perceived as in bad taste by many. The subs are fully sentient. They realize that the booing is in context. It is about Crean's subbing all the way down the bench. The crowd perceived it as being an inappropriate substitution. Some may question the crowd's or fans' right to boo their own team/players/coach. However, it is the fans' opinion voiced in the boos. They are entitled to their opinions.Yes, the individual players may feel bad. Well, some of the crowd and fans felt bad, too. I felt bad that Crean, on the surface, appeared to substitute incorrectly. No, I'm not the coach. But, there is a history here. Why does Crean not institute a decent half court offense? Why does Crean play run and gun type ball preconference knowing that in conference the defenses will dictate that a decent half court offense is part of the weaponry that a team will need? I support the team. I support Coach Crean. I yearn for Crean to do well. By booing his action specifically in measured doses...actually supports IU. And yes, it seems in bad form. But, in this case, I support the boos.
