    IUWBB vs Arizona - NCAA - 3/29/21 @ 9:00 ET on ESPN

Enjoyed cheering the women's team! Proud of you! Very well done. I have to admit, it is heartening to see an entire team playing 100% effort for 100% of each game! Thrilling! Go on to bigger and better things!
  2. Friends and family that I have talked to say two things: 1. Inspired, outside-of-the-box hire; and 2. very much a positive that Indiana University hired someone who understands "our basketball culture" with the emphasis that he is a black NBA coach and college all-star! My OSU fan...ahem...acquaintances...say that the choice mostly is inspired and great for IU. But, they also express chagrin that Matta is the Associate AD for basketball. They are worried that the emphasis Matta brings is off-court and recruiting. Read this and the comments: https://www.elevenwarriors.com/college-basketball/2021/03/121961/thad-matta-hired-by-indiana-as-associate-athletic-director-for-mens-basketball-administration#comments Woodson has great interpersonal relationship skills. He has coached professional basketball players. He has evaluated their skills and helped huge talents win games. IU has already had a coach that they hired from within because of the players. IU has already had a coach that was a cheater. IU has already had a coach that was hired because of his resume but that overselling got old and recruiting fell off. IU has already had a coach that won at another school but did not seem to embrace IU culture. Why use a resume to hire another coach that is not one of us? Try it. You will like it! IU's coach is Woodson. Get behind him and the team. Everything else is sour grapes.
  3. Did Lander put in his name in the portal before or after being informed of the decision of HC Woodsen?

Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

He has been what may be considered trolling on Rivals. He also puts out the word but has missed every single big one that I can remember including Romeo, and a previous coaching search 4 or so years ago.

I have a good friend and IU alum that lives with his family on Oahu. Thinking of Maui next. Been to wine country south of San Diego. Been to Virgin Islands, St Martin, PR, France, Italy, Florida all over, TX, S Diego 46 states, HI..even to KY. I want Greece and Croatia and Spain and Portugal. Wife wants to visit family in New England and NJ, then S Diego and HI. Guess where we are going? I'm thinking that the next banner in AH will be the women's National Champs! I'm seeing IU will get Fife as HC and Woodsen as AHC. Or Beilein as HC and Fife as heir apparent AHC. Or Drew...or...

Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

Yeah! I'm checking flights to Hawaii after stopping in San Diego for 2 weeks! That is after the pandemic settles somewhat. Thanks for asking. Waiting for the NCAAT to decide between coaches. Heck of a selection committee. Thinking Baylor...because some defense is good...and a little more team play than others...maybe. Gonzaga just has to be beaten...and we went for Few years ago. Or so rumors had it. This could drag out about 15 or 16 more days. Besides, watch the IU women's team!

The longer the coach search and the more IU loses, the more fodder a naysayer like Dakich has to vilify. Doesn't matter who is selected...DD will be saying something...nay...lots negative and controversial. That is the nature of media beast today. Only one way to deal with the hate and discontent. Turn. It. Off.

I may be one of the few pro-Archie Miller fans still around. But, I am more of a pro-IU fan than that. It definitely was past time for Archie Miller to be at IU. He had lost the team and any recruiting to fill holes in the roster were way behind the curve. And I strongly disagree with any justification that I have read so far to keep him another year. What could Dolson do in half a year that he couldn't have done in the last half of a year? Nothing, in my opinion. I keep believing that there is a good possibility that something is in the works. Something besides Brad Stevens. And not everyone will be happy initially. Just be patient another 2 or 3 weeks. The guys putting their names in the transfer portal is not anything we can do about it. The new coach will be able to recruit circles around Archie Miller...i hope. And I'm an old IU guy that doesn't really support getting Alford. But if he was hired, I would get on board. But, there would have to be some clear language in his charges and IU policy about certain situations.

Yeah, Archie Miller's lack of winning games at Indiana was not up to standards. It really is bad to not win against Purdue, to not compete at the highest levels in the B1G year in and year out. And not getting into the NCAAT and making decent wins post season really is not satisfactory. Just wonder why Archie Miller didn't have the right stuff to provide good PG backup, shooters, etc. It was clear to me he had gotten behind the curve on recruiting and had lost the team. Loved him at Dayton. Not so much after his first year at IU. Those injuries and locker room issues plus the baggage of the TC era etc. were too much. But, he and the team had some positives. He left the opportunity for improvement in better shape for the coming coach than he had. Grades are not an issue. The players are upstanding citizens. the future head coach will not be saddled with having to reopen the connection to the Indiana high schools. That inside/out recruiting emphasis may just be a little more flexible in the future. The underclass members are good basketball players and I love that. And Indiana is a clean program. I

No, not really. He was fired. So, IU and Archie Miller may still be working on the exit agreement. So during the interim, there may be a request to not talk. Finally, if I remember correctly, RMK gave that KMA speech in Dun Meadow. And T Crean gave a kind of parting shot. Maybe he really doesn't have a lot to say about the situation. Maybe he shouldn't say a lot. Like the baggage he was handed at first. (ie. Do not send any players packing because of the grades issue.) Focus on inside state of Indiana first issue. Team chemistry problems that were difficult to handle because of the aforementioned stuff. He was paid very well to overcome all that. And in the end the fans yelled fire Archie. Should he send a PR statement saying thanks IU for firing me after backing me into a corner and I really enjoyed the bs? Or should he blow smoke and say thanks for the memories and the great times and wonderful players, their parents and all the fantastic fans! Its a great university and wish them the best!

No. Your post said that this is not a thread for which fanbase loves basketball more. Not that poster wasn't taking part in it. Plus, the post then added the picture of Marquette basketball 1977. Meh. So I topped it.And by the way, this is an Indiana basketball fan site. I am listening and responding with empathy. No need to yell and misquote yourself.

Very interesting read dated yesterday. Mrs. Musselman is interviewed and some other tidbits. What I get out of it is that Musselman has moved around a lot. Loves basketball and his family. Arkansas Athletic Department may have been in debt recently. They may be getting some big bucks because of cable TV $$ owed. https://www.bestofarkansassports.com/eric-musselman-danyelle-musselman-indiana-basketball-coach/ My apologies if already posted.

    General Coach Candidate News

If nominated, I will not accept. If selected, I shall not perform. PS. I have no problem with the AD keeping things quiet. It is a great work that he is doing. It will be Matta, or a coach still in the NCAAT. It is possible it will be Beard or others. Less probable is an IU guy. It will be someone that has had NCAA basketball head coaching experience at a large university. Or an NBA coach with some college coaching experience. Just an opinion. And it will happen within 3 weeks. And it will not be in the ballpark of $7 million per year. (No inside info here...no source other than what you have seen.) Get it right, please, I beg...I plead...

Steady now fans. I'm not panicking. These players entering the transfer portal makes sense. IU is likely talking to them but not about who will be head coach and what that head coach will do. So the players really should be checking their situations. Transfer portal is not irrevocable. Here, take a seat. I am waaaaay over panicking. I thought that RMK was heading toward self immolation. Panicking, yes. I was panicking when IU gave RMK a zero tolerance edict. Then the players wanted Davis as HC...panic. Then when he who must not be named who was on NCAA isht list already was hired, panic. Then he and that one assistant cheated and were not monitored with proper oversight by IU...panic. Then the players revolted, stopped going to class and DD kicked them off the team...panic. Then, contrary to some posters on this site recently...many of us had done some background on Crean. We knew what we were getting. He was clean. Didn't emphasize defense. And was really not wrapped tight and overhyped lots...panic. And then Archie Miller was hired. But contrary to some posters, he also was not universally touted by fans. He was a risk. I was a fan of his at Dayton. Was pleasantly surprised he was on the short list and was hired. But, he couldn't break through after year 1. Injuries, backup plans, lack of innovation, you name it...losing...panic. I am not panicking now. And some posters worry if IU can bounce back after Archie Miller...give me a break. What, me worry?

If the ability to perform certain physical acts are part of the job description then a physical is legal. For instance, ability to climb a tower to maintain or install equipment. Or the ability to show players how to shoot/defend or perform physical acts. Also there may be pre-existing conditions that would make the coach ineligible for a specific health insurance coverage which would be required.

Not a bad summary. But, there may be more options available: #5: IU hires an IU guy that has been an outsider and he either flops or succeeds...(ie. Fife); #6: IU hires one or the other and he is up and down and barely hangs on but no NC banner... #7. IU hires an IU guy for 4 years with an outsider as the heir apparent who takes over; #8. IU hires an outsider for 4 years and and IU guy takes over; #9. IU hires Brad Stevens and he either is successful or fails; #10. IU wins the NC in football and fans forget about IU basketball; #11. IU hires Dan Dakich and he tells us what he should have done and doesn't pull punches; #12. IU hires Steve Alford and he doesn't hang the banner and because of his legacy IU cannot fire him; #13. IU rehires he who must not be named and IU hangs banners; #14. IU has an interim coach for 4 years; #15. IU leaves the B1G and goes to the MVC and Notre Dame joins the B1G.

Archie Miller was fired about ten days ago. It took AD Glass ten days after TC was let go to announce the AM hire. Not really knowing if or how many feelers were put out at that time and this time...the coach selection clock starts now. I like skimming these posts. I appreciate those that try to give information they deem relevant (ie 0708 and Chris etc.). Really enjoy the discussions on coach qualifications and basketball trends. IU goals and AD goals are fun to parse. My favorite posts recently involved K Lander's where he said something like: happiness is coming. That was interpreted to mean something about a coach...maybe Cheaney. The next day it is alleged to have been about an upcoming spring break trip to Florida. I was and am an RMK fan. I cringed at his antics. I appreciated his abilities to get the most out of players as a team. I miss his wins and intensity and competition in the B1G back in the days. I do not miss his dark side. Many knew how to set him up so that he would go off. His unwillingness to hold back and not respond and IU's unwillingness/inability to handle that set RMK up. So here we are today. Still picking up pieces of that mess. I did get to see Mike Davis' team in Rupp Arena upsetting Duke in '02. Had mixed feelings about his hire. Was really sad to see he who must not be named and the aftermath of cellphonegate. He is a great coach but I cannot understand why IU did not monitor closely and catch him early...so that the rest of that did not have to have happened. And the T Crean hire was upsetting because of his lack of focus on team and defense. Archie Miller was a crapshoot but he had been excellent over here in Dayton. Those hires took time to get done. Give this one a lot of time. It has to be done right. Do work in the garden. Read books. Art and music and volunteering are great outlets. Then support IU when they roll out the red carpet for the new coach...may be 20 days from now. And save the red carpet. It can be repurposed as NC banners.

I also do not think that it is Bennett because of this: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/17/why-uva-basketball-coach-tony-bennett-turned-down-a-raise.html He gets over $5 million per year which includes extra bonuses. And he turned down a raise. That plus IU AD said innovative.

The latest news on IU AD's new HC basketball coach: https://saturdaytradition.com/indiana-football/report-two-new-names-attached-to-indiana-basketballs-coaching-search/ In this linked article Matta is a possibility. Bozich relates that Woodson interviewed with the AD. I speculate that Woodson is not part of Plan B. Matta just may be. Pitino is out, Stevens is out, Oats is out. Lots of buzz for Beard by fans. But I don't see it. Lots of buzz for the flavor of the weekend like Musselman and ORU's coach...Bennett is hot on this board and others. Khristen Lander tweeted: Happiness is coming. Maybe he and his family know something. What? Maybe Lander has gotten positive feedback from a coaching search prospect; or has a new love; I hope that he is happy at IU. Some buzz about a rumor by a guy who knows Lander that alleges something like: That is great news! ..Only thing that comes to mind out of Evansville is Calbert Cheaney. For an example just look north to what is going on recently in Michigan. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calbert_Cheaney I speculate that IU will get Matta, Bennett or less likely, Cheaney. Thad Matta is living in Indy and has had a bad back. He hasn't coached in a few years because of that. I just cannot get excited about Beilein for a number of reasons. Cheaney would be risky. But so would anyone else...including Brad Stevens. Other than that...all quiet on the western front. I speculate that no IU guy will be HC at IU in the short run. Maybe Matta as HC and Woodson as assistant. The transition staff of 3 coaches is just that. Wonder if any of them will stay after the new HC is hired. And this tidbit from OSU's Eleven Warriors: NO, PLEASE. I'm not sure I could draw up a bigger punch in the d** k to follow a first-round exit than the program's all-time winningest coach un-retiring to coach a conference rival just days later, but folks, that might be where we're at! I'll say this, the annual "will Thad Matta return to coaching?" dance is a hell of a lot less fun when the team in question will have to compete with my team on the court and in recruiting every year. Then again, there's nothing Indiana's basketball program (or athletic department as a whole, for that matter) has done in my life that would lead me to believe they're about to make a good hire, so I guess I'll just trust the process here.
