Game Thread: 9/18 vs. Cincinnati - Noon - ESPN
Dave from Dayton replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Can't wait until game time! The team and the coaches have all sorts of pressure heaped on them. But they are very experienced in this sort of game. Neither team has seen the entire arsenal of the other. IU needs to run much better than they have been. IU's Special Teams may make the difference. Will be fun. I made a mistake. Bought a 7 year Bird Dog Bourbon just before the Idaho game. Just don't. Been relatively sober since. Time to switch back to WT101 or OGD114... If I wanted to stay under $30...or Jefferson Reserve Ocean for over $50. Just like IU...stepping up my game. -
2021 IUFB Prediction League - Week 3 vs Cincinnati (H) 9/18/21 Noon ESPN
Dave from Dayton replied to LIHoosier's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Cincinnati Bearcats are for real. QB is experienced and can run but likely won't, mostly. He is accurate on passes and they are going for bigger gains. So our DBs need to be on their toes. And pressure on their QB is a must. Lines are good on both sides of the ball. Their kickoffs aren't perfect with one per game going OB. Des running out of the pocket is their secret weapon...but not used a lot, yet. Cincy bends but doesn't break. They are confident. IU just needs to settle down and do things correctly. Make it through the first 10 minutes cleanly. No turnovers, no penalties, pressure them, win in the trenches, receivers running crisp routes, etc. Cincy will try to do the same. Game will be won on the line. Both teams have not shown their whole games. There will be surprises. Carr sees daylight...Fry gets 2 TDs. Penix makes lots of quick tosses. (Our OL is the big ?). Cincy gets penalties galore. IU grows. Stadium rocks! Dave picks perfectly... Cincy 24; Indiana, our Indiana 31 -

B1G Conference Predictions 2021-22
Dave from Dayton replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If TJD can develop more of his outside game, in part because of Durr spending some time as the 5...then Durr will be worth his salt...but not the (outside and 18' ) shooter that I was positing. Remember, Durr is from the AAC not the ACC. But hope his numbers there translate to the B1G. Galloway already is a role glue guy. Just think if he can hit a few shots! Yeah, great! I never thought of Duncomb as a great PG...trying to envision it...heh, yeah no. -
B1G Conference Predictions 2021-22
Dave from Dayton replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
B1G conference predictions: 1. The referees' calls are not going to get better; 2. Three universities will forfeit games because of Covid-19; 3. The ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 alliance will not agree to assume responsibility from the NCAA regarding self regulation of college sports; 4. The Big Ten Network will not expand it's offering of live sports such as soccer or swimming or golf and BTN+ will still suck; 5. Indiana University Men's Basketball Team will find on it's roster: a great PG and not who you think; a great shooter and not who you think; a great glue guy...well, we know who this is; and a great banger underneath that hits all the buttons...not; 6. Indiana University Men's Basketball Team gets into the NCAAT without being on the bubble; 7. Indiana does not lose to OSU at Assembly Hall on January 6; 8. Coach Woodsen gets a really decent pay raise in 2022; 9 Indiana beats purdue but not in basketball, sorry; 10. Coach Woodsen doesn't immediately find the shooters to play 4 out and 1 in...but it does happen this season; 11. Recruiting picks up and the trend gets better and better! -
Do you drink when you fish or fish when you drink? Lots of lake weed messing with fishing near banks at Indian Lake OH. Zebra mussels have removed the algae but resulted in weed problems. Oh well...lots of bluegill, some big catfish, some Kolsh, and some Old Tub bourbon... Others get saugeyes and bass. 115 Hp moves the 20' pontoon boat enough to pull skiers...believe it or not. Not good for beginners, though. Wife skis slalom as does daughter. But weeds on this shallow 5000 acre lake are a drag...literally. Better than algae imho...as an environmental engineer...They will have 2 weed cutters next year...and say there is a way to knock down some of the weeds that the OEPA and ODNR will approve.

Who will be most improved player & Why.
Dave from Dayton replied to HoosierBoiler's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
How the heck would I know who will be the most improved player this season? There are so many that the team needs to improve in many ways. Here is my guess on the most improved player: Coach Woodsen! Well, he Has improved from being a player into being an NBA coach...then to the IU basketball men's head coach. OK, then...Phin? Had been hoping and there is still hope but I wonder about his being able to improve all that much. Hope I am wrong. Khristian Lander? Still needs a full season to...season. Lots of improvement but...not most improved. He needs a shot doctor. Xavier Johnson? With his assists...and decent shooting...IU needs a point guard...a really great point guard...If Xavier Johnson has any improvement to his game...wow! But not my pick for most improved. Galloway...maybe... Improving shooting and getting the ball in position to score are the two biggest challenges for IU. Only Kopp and Bates are decent outside shots. We need a couple more good shooters...both outside and free throws. I think that Rob Phinesee will improve the most. Confidence will return. His outside shot will go way up from 1/6. He also will move the ball into position faster by not walking up to and across the half court. If he can stop the opponent PG's first step on defense then that would be great. -

Indinia 38 Spuds 9 Hoosiers get it right this time and spell Indiana correctly on all of the football jerseys. Penix plays well for a half then Tuttle comes in and does the same. Carr averages over 5 yards per carry. Big plays, yes! Almost everyone gets in the game. This should have been our first game. -

I think the rules need to be changed to penalize those that are not incredibly positive about Indiana football. Everyone on here should be looking through crimson-colored glasses. And to top it off...those living in enemy territory, like Ohio should get 50 bonus points per game. Furthermore, those of us with degrees from not only IU-B but other B1G universities and still cheering for IU should get another 75 points! With that reconfiguration, I should be waaaay ahead of tomallenfan1 and the rest of you. FIFY -

Hiya UA! Yeah, Marion's Pizza is an institution in the Dayton OH area. Like that it is local and has lots of seating. But am a fan of other pizzas and places. Rip Rap Roadhouse previously Jackass Flats; Manhattan; Jet's; Little York Tavern; some have nice patios. Like the Dayton area for the huge complex of bike trails; parks; approachable people; cultural advantages including the new Levitt Pavilion that has over 50 free outside music event downtown with beer and wine! And there is minimal rush hour traffic. And cost of living is below average. Used to live in Evansville; B-town; Madison WI; Virginia Beach and eastern Connecticut...fun places but love the Midwest. Waiting for Madison WI to get warmer through global changes...then would seriously consider moving there...if I could turn back the clock. Would move to S Diego if they got 25 inches of rain a year instead of 2.5" per...and I had an extra $2 million. You like UA? Yeah, the game was tough...but we all knew it would be...and it put a big cloud over the program that may last a while. On the other hand, we did learn a lot and got the twitches behind us. Tough place to play. -

What is left to be said? Game started with 2 mistakes in 2 series of plays resulting in 2 Iowa TDs. Lack of containment by our end and a pass that went to our receiver but then into the hands of an Iowa defender for a score. Down 14 - zip to start but the IU defense stayed relatively solid. Our offensive line didn't make holes for our backs. Carr averaged 3 yards per carry. Penix was off in the first half...way off. But the receivers were not in the open. Something was not right with the slow play on offense and the snap count. And Iowa has an excellent defense. At least the punting improved after a dismal start. Good news is this was a road game against a B1G West team and IU learned a lot. It really would suck to lose to Iowa if the game was scheduled later in the season. To me, it looked like the IU team played hard all game. Iowa's OL and DL are impressive. And IU's DL seemed up to the task, mostly. With a better start, maybe IU would have performed better one asks? No, I answer. IU's offense needs work. The bourbon and the cab sure put a rosy feel on the beautiful Saturday afternoon. Grilling flank steak...helped to ease the pain of the game. Turn the page. -

On the road, B1G opener, first game, crowd noise, rusty...what did we expect. Did you see any of the OSU v Illinois game? Took both teams a while to settle down. IU has made all of their mistakes in the first 5 minutes. The rest is IU playing as underdog. Go IU! -

Gary Barta, as chair of the CFB Selection Committee, said today that Iowa and Ohio State both do not have a chance in hell of making the playoffs...because of Indiana. -
Wayne, that is an example of the controversial calls that I was talking about. Seems to me that a case could be made on both sides of the issue. Definitely helmet to helmet. Why no call on OSU's 12 for targeting? Well, 12's hands and arms are involved apparently'in the tackle. His shoulder makes contact at same time. Offensive receiver did have control of the ball so it was a reception. Receiver saw the tackle coming and ducked his head. I believe that the receiver did not duck into 12's helmet. The receiver did try to make something of the play in spite of 12's helmet leading the way into the collision... But once again, there are other factors: the hands; the shoulder; prior recognition by receiver; and the duck. No call is controversial but could be justified. Yeah, but, 12 launched and went crown first... What really pissed me off was that the refs reviewed the fumble and didn't say anything about the apparent targeting. The receiver was temporarily knocked out for crying out loud. Fix this rule! Protect the players! Sux, because I wanted a call, for sure.

A case could be made that Minny shot themselves. 5 penalties and big mistakes starting in the 3rd quarter cost Minny the game. Yes, there were controversial calls that went against Minny. And yes, OSU gets help from many sources including the B1G, the way the university school system is set up in Ohio, demographics, TV revenue, etc. But Minny had the opportunities to go up and stay up big double digits. It's a first game. Both teams played like it. No team can afford to give up big gulps of points to OSU. That's a killer.

I've used YT TV and Hulu. That bit about Roku and YT TV is problematic. Both services were good. Both increased prices. But some of IU's games have been broadcast on ESPNU. Check if the service one is considering has ESPNU as well as the other ESPN channels. Finally, as to Sling...be forewarned...there is a 3 or 2 day free trial. However, one must enter it from the specific add that shows it. If one clicks out of the add then tries to use the code, it does not work and one is stuck for two months of payment to Sling. Sling requires one month prior notice of cancellation. I really do not like Sling.

2021 IUFB Prediction League - Week 1 vs Iowa (A) 9/4/21 3:30 BTN
Dave from Dayton replied to LIHoosier's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Iowa's DL is new. Iowa's QB isn't Penix. IU is on the road. Iowa screwed IU out of the B1G Playoffs last year. Penix is back. Iowa can punt all day long. Indiana keeps mistakes down...27...for the win! Iowa 17...Take it to the bank. And, again, Ohio State, at the end of the B1G head to head games will once again get a pass even though they didn't earn it. And once again I won't be surprised. -

Game Thread Part 2: IUBB vs BC Mega Boogaloo | 1:00PM *NOT TELEVISED*
Dave from Dayton replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Last sentence of the above quote is about IU responding to BC Mega length and physicality inside. So I have questions about that. How and why did TJD get zero fouls in two games, I think that's right, and IU responded to BC Mega's inside game well? We hear a decent amount about the offense. But, the defense, which is seemingly pretty good, gets less attention. Is IU denying the dribble drive? Is IU stopping the pass inside? Does TJD step on the foot of the guy that he is defending but it isn't called? Is Kopp helping defense inside...Race? How would the defense best be described? Is Indiana quicker and has long arms? BC Mega did not have an inordinate amount of TOs...so is it our rebounding and pressure defense? What does this look like? Thanks in advance... -

Dave from Dayton replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Many people are saying that I had a lot to do with Friday's win over BC Mega. But, I am way too humble. But, it was with my leadership, support and ability to score that IU men's basketball team went undefeated in '76-77...the year I graduated from IU-B and got married to my IU sweetheart. I sure scored a lot that year. Trying to keep it going this year to help the team...you know what I mean...nudge, nudge... Tip of ole toupee to: TJD; Tamar; Race; Kopp; Jordan; Parker; Rob; Xavier; Landers; and crew and last but not least Coach Woodson. Watched on Twt the videos of the first half as they were playing. Thanks mucho for that. But was difficult for me to see plays develop. Laughed at the audio. I wanted to study the PG situation...but really didn't get a grasp on it. What I want to see: Rob Phin needs to hit shots...please oh mighty Gawd of the Basketball Games...please touch Rob and make him a can't miss shooter. I want to see Landers excel. I want to see more of Tamar...and him helping to lead the team. May TJD always be a great player in all aspects...and may he be healthy...no fouls in the first game for TJD...really? Nice! Race hitting from 18 foot out and at least one 3 a game would be wonderful. Assists, effective playmaking, rebounds, movement on offense...yes. Gotta hit over 70% of the FTs. What do you fans think of the PGs? I did predict that IU would get 7 3's in the first game. I thought it would take 2 more attempts than it did. So I predict that IU will get 9 3's in todays game...in 21 attempts. And FTs will improve. Landers will see more PT. As will Parker. Jordan with all those offensive rebounds is a great glue guy.
