  1. Has an official statement been made by the players regarding this late signing? If not, how do you understand it so well? Do you know the players and did they tell you? Coaches, journalists?

top 50 coaches for 14-15 season

Some of these are head scratchers. Coach K should be one, Ollie too low, Roy getting snubbed haha, Bennett too high are some observations. My potential replacements represented well.

Not even close. Brownell consistently has done more with less where Crean does less with more. Brownell has done well at UNCW, Wright State and Clemson. We could do much worse considering who we have now, although I think we get a big time coach with more pedigree.
  4. Facts are that most of the committed kids sign on the first day of the signing period. The ones that don't usually haven't made up their minds which school they plan to attend. South Carolina just secured the #21 ranked player in the nation and he signed right after he committed. Another top 50 recruit is waiting to tomorrow to commit and all signs also point to SC. Granted these are hometown kids and one is a legacy player. But Indiana should always be signing 5 stars in every class just like the other 4/5 top national programs. I wouldn't be surprised if these 2 unsigned kids were letting things shake out at other programs maybe looking to sign elsewhere. Probably a good idea since our program and head coach is in a state of flux and probable transition. Also, with a new coach better recruits may be available in the spring. It can work both ways.

I agree. Matta isn't on my list of coaches. My point is that he would leave his football school to come to Indiana.

Agree with Izzo. Read my post again. He would be the one not leaving and probably Belien also. I think Matta would, but he should have won at least ne National Champ with all the talent he has coached. Big Man U.

Didn't we lose a women's coach to Purdue recently? No school or team is off limits to get the right coach; even the Boston Celtics.

I disagree Crean is better than an IU guy, but I agree you need to look outside IU first and foremost. Just look at Michigan football as a perfect example. Rich Rod had it going on then they hire a train wreck although he still beat us. Their next hire will be right though with Harbaugh who's a Michigan grad.

Only if your the school that loses his coach. Indiana could take any B1G coach with the exception of one; maybe two with the momentum of Belien at Michigan. Matta would take it; its his dream job just like Stevens.

Off the record isjust that. Coaches have contracts that stipulate exactly this. That's why you have go betweens like Eddie Fogler contact agents. Coaches certainly wouldn't discuss this with recruits if they didn't want it getting back to their schools. It happens everyday; just look at the Cubs. We would win big playing this game, and the length of a season puts the ball in our court.

All of my candidates fit your criteria in first paragraph. Yes, we will be able to attact all of those I mention except maybe Hoiberg. He's at home with a big contract and had health issues in the past. I will still take him in a heartbet, no pun intended, as he played for the Pacers and knows Indiana basketball heritage. Plus, he's a great coach!

We would all be with him laughing at his winning tweets. Seems to be a recruiting and other advantage if your winning. What's funny is we scoff at losing to him? Not if he's coaching here with better resources and players. I really like him as he seems to be a real players coach. Imagine the possibilities?

    1. A two time NCAA champion deserves more respect than what he gets at his own football school who is more concerned about their next football coach. Can you imagine how that would suck? To answer your question, you're not settling by any I mention. You're still getting a coach x 10 of our current.

Stevens maybe but there are many reasons that could work in our favor with him. The others wouldn't be longshots at all. Two are at football schools and the other will never win a national championship in Iowa.

In my view all of my tiers are much better coaches than our current. And quite frankly I could name 20 more at least ahead of Crean. I just listed my choices. They would all move us closer to what we all want which is competing yearly for championships and post season births. A good quality coach let's us do that.

IU vs UIndy Post Game Thread

It was made to be funny and I'm happy you got it with a few others. When you have witnessed 20 years of greatness all the while being a student to relish in the pinnacle, you have to realize many other relish storming the court against Illinois at home in an 8 win season as their barometer. And they call me depressed? If only they had something to compare it to? Grumpy is a far cry from me or of my feelings of IU basketball in general. Things are actually in the upswing and you have to bottom out AGAIN to start moving up. At least we're not North Carolina that cheated for their last 2 championships. Things were in place except the most important thing; someone who can coach. The eternal optomist in me sees the rainbow; where no one uses apologies in their username. Especially for our coach. Go Hoosiers!

I have a well thought out post, somewhere from one of my many that a lot here didn't like, that follows a similar track that our current situation evolves. It revolves around recruiting the current pool of coaches you think can get it done here at IU. It revolved around a tier process of three tiers. The first being your most highly sought after; then to tier 2 and 3. You take this year as a dating phase or get to know you. Use intermediaries to make contact because of contracts to gauge interest and if tier one bites, you move forward. All the while maintaining contacts with tier 2 and 3 just in case. From my recollection: Tier 1: Brad Steven, Billy Donovan Tier 2: Up and comers, Fred Hoiberg, Gregg Marshall, Archie Miller, Tim Miles Tier 3: IU guys, Steve Alford, Randy Wittman, Mike Woodson, Keith Smart, Jim Crews If tier 1 bites, you make the hire. If tier one doesn't, move to tier 2 and so on. We have a whole year to get this right all the while maintaining contact with each to see how their season progresses. Follow this and we get the right coach and I stand by my pool of candidates.

IU vs UIndy Post Game Thread

Was this game scheduled before Davis became their coach? Wow, one ex IU coach against the next ex IU coach. Who will out coach the other? Talent will be in our favor, but if everything was equal; it may be a wash. I will say graduation rates goes in Creans favor, but having kids stay out of trouble goes with Davis. The tiebreaker probably goes to Davis as he got to a championship with Knight's players. At any rate it should be an exciting game full of dribbling the air out of the ball for a last second chuck from 3 land. Some tenures duplicate others in many ways.

    Can Crean stay in Bloomington?

Crean has always gotten a pass. First one obviously the team was devistated which we all agree. Then its his kids graduate and are good kids; just wait til he gets more good players. Now its shown a lot of his kids really aren't good ambassadors for our program. He really has no discipline when your AD has to step up and lay down the law. In my opinion it comes down that he's just a lousy coach. When he gets out on the court, his teams rarely excute good, winning basketball. They are ill prepared, turnover prone, and usually are ineffective at little things like inbounding the ball. He is totally ineffective working the officials; he has no clue of using timeouts effective. He's too busy pacing the court, subbing, glancing at his notecards, or sucking on his juice bottle that he doesn't watch the game. Its almost an afterthought for him. To not study and understand the game being played in front of you just cannot be overcome. Even with his 500 page playbook it's useless unless you can see and understand the game. Coaching, what he gets paid big bucks to do, is his biggest problem. In year 7 it is very obvious.

Happy you got to watch AJ as I did. He was a truly great member of the IU basketball fraternity. Like you said your Crean lovefest has another thread.

    A.J. Guyton

Yep, and some are much more knowledgeable about the game than others. Take AJ for example, excellent shot and very quick. He also passed the ball well and always played within a team concept. He was a class act on and off the court. It was something Indiana basketball was known for having. Good kids, students, and human beings that usually brought their A game ever night. So sad you were not around to witness anything like this to compare. I'm sure you would have a different outlook.

    Can Crean stay in Bloomington?

I hadn't seen the quote by Vic who obviously feels strongly for Crean. I retract my comment and apologies for stating otherwise.
