Official Indiana vs Iowa Game Thread

I guess the whole 15 minutes he may get tonight are just too much to ask for a 20 year old. You reward good play with minutes, not substitution. Jeremy may even get more comfortabe and play even better but always take the hot hand out is Creans motto. Have you watched any games? -

Why does Gordon play? Jeremy plays hard and gets subbed. Nothing like killing momentum than your own coach. -

Iowa has a great inside out game. But if we could learn to block out it would be nice. How many put back dunks do they have? Eight? -
On Yogi’s Recruitment and the Impact of Social Media (Plus a Message to the Naysayers)
schoosier replied to DocLibby's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Doc, thanks for answering my question relating to his announcement being spoiled. Your mention of his emotions shown on his expressions has really made me pay attention to those now. I could tell he was injured on the play he went out of bounds the other game. I hope he is doing well and tell him all alumni and fans of Indiana University thank him for his dedication and hard work. We all want him and the team to do well. -
If he looks at all options and then considers the risk of potential injury, I think he is gone. $ talks and one look at the Noel injury from a couple years ago will sway him. In Creans defense I think Noahs outside game has improved with his driving to the basket the last two games. I just wish we would have seen him get this many shots earlier in the year. Our record would be different.

I feel the same about losing and I didn't even feel that way when Davis was our coach. An apathetic fan base is what we have become. Thanks Tom. -

Down 12 and we press. Maybe that would have been a good adjustment at halftime to counter whatever Bo decides to do, but Crean just can't manage it. -

Sheehey got called for a non existent travelling. All the while every time Kaminisky drives he drags his pivot foot and its never called. Terrible Ted on the calls. Good suggestion on Crean getting T'd up. Its not like were coming back anyways. -

Its nice to finally see us use Noah both on the post and outside. Its sad that it took us so long to figure it out. Just makes me wonder what could have been? This will be our only year to see him play in the candy stripes so why not get the most out of him? -
I'll go with Noah as well. Tough call as we were well balanced which makes us a lot better than just relying on Yogi. Noah driving to the basket was another dimension of his game that he does well and I hope to see more of it.

Scouting a potential Crean replacement
schoosier replied to kylehornsbyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I thought I responded in kind to his, but I understand how moderating can be tough and I apologize for that. I also understand how when things get difficult on the hardwood, that you will have opposites on what they think is best for IU basketball. I believe wee all want a good or sick product on the floor and that's certainly not what were getting. Especially for 3 million a year. -

You think Stevens is a longshot but think Sean Miller would leave Arizona? Who's dreaming? At least Stevens has ties to the state and said IU was his dream job. Millers already turned us down. Agree on Marshall but you probably don't know anything about him other than last years final four. Collins doesn't even have a full year experience. You did answer my question, but it obviously shows your lack of not only basketball, but àlso what it takes to win. Age is a good excuse for you and both our current head coach. At least I buy it from you, boss. -
Official game day thread IU vs. Iowa

If I was still a student at IU, I would blow off my afternoon classes and get started early. Then by halftime you neither care nor are even remotely interested. I don't feel good about this one as the teams are headed in different directions. Iowa seems to be peaking and IU is doing what we normally do this time of year under Crean. If you think Purdue was bad, this one will be worse. -
Prediction League Game 26 (Week 16) IU vs Iowa (02/27/14)
schoosier replied to Naturalhoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Its gonna be ugly. Iowa is as talented as any in the conference. Their on an upswing and we're in the toilet. I would actually love Crean to get a technical. Has he even had one this year? Iowa. 83 IU. 57 -
You're right its not a treat. Its a walk in the park. On a sunny day knowing any offensive adjustment that you will have to make will not be countered. Beating Indiana is as simple as blanketing Yogi as soon as he gets past half court and double teaming Noah anytime he gets the ball free throw line extended and under. To make sure Yogi misses more than he makes, press him so that he has to work to get the ball up the court. He will be tired and start missing shots after halftime. Its a broken record on that yet Crean hasn't figured out a way to beat this.

Scouting a potential Crean replacement
schoosier replied to kylehornsbyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
You have to identify the best possible candidates and he would be at the top of my list. In fact I have listed at least 3 and I don't remember you having any. Its so much easier to deny and deflect that this is a relevant discussion for Indiana fans and alumni than to contribute actual thought. Keep cheerleading though, because after Noah leaves thisyear both you and Crean can act just as surprised as our pathetic performance this year. -
I think your undervaluing the talent we actually had. IMO, sick talent is having 2 top 4 picks and 4 1000 point scorers on the same team not including 5 with Sheehey and 6 with Yogi. When do you think we will ever replicate that? Now if your saying sick meaning Wilt, Kobe, Pistol and Jordan; then I would agree.
-
2 players on the same team being drafted in the top 4 picks is not sick talent? Please give me your definition of what would be better? Then give me an example of two players being drafted that high that lost in the sweet 16? The only asterisk that should be noted would be the most underperforming team in the NCAA's tournament history. I'm sorry but your in denial of the talent just like Crean saying he never thought of losing Cody and Vic last year. I bet you think we can still make the dance this year too.
-
5 now that Sheeey is number 47 at IU and will have had 6 on the same team when Yogi joins the club. Just sick talent was on last years team and the only nets they cut down were in defeat at home to Ohio State. What more can you say except 2 were top 4 draft choices. What really gets me is we have many fans who were satisfied with our results last year when the chances of us ever fielding a team this talented and deep at IU will probably never happen again. Now I'm sick.

If Crean ever runs out of schools like Davis is doing, he would be a hell of a politician. Always blaming someone else and never admitting what he knows. Plus it would be easy to turn the coach speak into the required political jargon.

Scouting a potential Crean replacement

This year isn't the year to get Stevens but maybe after year two. The constant travelling and 4x games compared to college combined with not getting to watch his kids grow up may convince him to want to get back into the college ranks. Plus, moving his wife out of her comfort zone where friends and family are a long way away may prove to be the turning point. You also have to look at coaches who have not been successful in the pros but come back into college to find they haven't lost much. In football you have Spurrier here in SC plus Saban in AL. Pitino and Calipari are the obvious ones in basketball and also Larry Brown. Waiting an additional year also gives you time to evaluate the coaches you have zeroed in on now to see how they elevate or sustain the success. I don't believe Crean will be successful next year without Noah, but giving him another year will quiet the lone remaining fans who think he's the one. -
I would agree that maybe half of his teams have been good in transistion, but when you can't take care of the ball you lose the benefit of running. Plus, if you are a running team you would want to speed the game up no matter who you play, but I rarely remember a Crean coached Indiana team ever committing to this. If you think you know what you do best, you do it. Crean was thought of as a guard/ wing type offensive coach coming into Indiana, and yet we are in year 6 with no viable shooters other than our point. Its like he plays to his teams weaknesses rather than strengths which is why I say it is systemic and cannot be changed. Time to fish and stop cutting bait.

Six years is a long enough time frame for any coach to carve his niche on winning. Whether it be Knight with defense and in game coaching or planning, most long term coaches at one school hang their hat on something. This is where I feel Crean falls woefully short. I just can't find one area where I can say all of his teams exhibit excellence. Sampson for all of his weaknesses, his teams were tough and played hard. Tarkanian ran most teams into the ground. All of Creans teams seem to be soft, disinterested, and if things are not going well tend to not be able to turn it around. I think they mirror him. This is a systemic problem that one more year will not solve regardless of the talent. See last year. If the $ is there now, why wait? But I would suggest you have the top candidate to replace him already agreeing in principle. How do you do that with no contact clauses, etc? You have middlemen like Eddie Fogler contact coaches agents to see if there is interest. Then go from there. The last thing we would need is a repeat of the last "search committe" that failed miserably. Texas football search also comes to mind.

I remember him dismissing some for questionable behavior (Tommy Baker, Roberson), but do not recall any being arrested. I may be wrong. Can you tell me who those players were?
-
Coaches Coach. Expects a lot from players and does not coddle them. They would run thru a brick wall for him though. Teaches defense first which makes him stand out to me. Wins wherever he goes and improves year to year. Works officials and not afraid to speak his mind. I concur he has a chip on his shoulder. It gives him an edge. Sound familiar? Will go into the juco ranks if there is a need. Now highly paid at 1.6 per so could be hard to get him to leave. Fiercely loyal. Mentor John Kresse at College of Charleston. Notable assistants Jeff Meyer at Wintrop and Tom Creans favorate. He was my first choice at South Carolina that Frank Martin ended up getting. He would be my second choice to replace Crean behind Brad Stevens. Marshall is like a Bob Knight clone without the tampons in the players lockers. I think he's as close to the General as any in college basketball and may be the next great one.
