Isn't that the Mikan drill?
-
The NCAA allows the player's family to get a loan to pay for the Lloyds of London policy. Collateral to pay the premium is their future contract. With this being said and this was my decision I would play one year at IU then get paid. Bypassing the cash to have one great year in Bloomington would be worth it especially to have Vonleh's results.

If we get another five star center...
schoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I said something to the same effect regarding Mcgary's problems and fitting in well with our team and got a warning point. I guess when a player leaves the gloves can come off. Or maybe its selective enforcement just like the NCAA. -
If we get another five star center...

I disagree. He has lost a ton of weight, has soft hands, rebounds well, and would be a hell of an outlet passer for fast breaking. Plus if it gets into half court sets, he could high ball screen and roll to the basket or make good passes to wings or another post players. My question after year 6 or 7, what is Indiana basketballs system under Tom Crean? I would say fast breaks littered with turnovers or half court dribble dribble until chucking one up at the last moment. As far as defense, we can't play zone or press with efficiency so man to man? But that takes helpside defense which we haven't shown we can do that very well either. I will be interested in what you or others think our system is and has been under Crean's tenure. -
If we get another five star center...
schoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
No doubt even though he coined the term power forward. Big George also passed the ball well and was a prolific scorer. With so few of these game changers at center coming out, I just don't understand why Crean hasn't put more focus on the few Indiana boys that fit this mold. While a lot here may disagree with me, I think both Hammons and McGary were two of them. Of course, Zeller was a huge get and crean should get the credit for landing him. -

I forgot about Walt Bellamy and Don Schlundt(sp) who were both dominant centers for IU. I never got to see either play but Bellamy's rebounding stats were unbelievable. Kansas would be another to consider with Mikan, Wilt and Embibe to name a few. -

It must be difficult for coach when he has had 3 lottery picks in two years and now finds himself struggling to land these same type of players. He did not do himself any favors by underutilizing Noah this year as Noah said he could have done more. By also losing a great recruiter to UL as well as a Hoosier legend in CC, the messages being sent are that thing are not well in Bloomington. Then you look at the tournament performance after winning the big and failing to even get an NIT bid this past year. Kids want to get to the league but they also want to play for championships and for teams with stable secure coaches. We just don't have any of that currently. Crean is a hard worker so he has that going for him. I think he needs to spend this off season brushing up on his x and o's and maybe cutting his play book in half. -

Alan Henderson and Dean Garrett both went on to have solid NBA careers although I don't think either made the all star game. But I agree we have never been known as a center oriented team like UCLA. -
Happy Birthday Calbert Cheaney!
schoosier replied to Walking Boot of Doom's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
CC you're absolutely right. And teammates going to war for each other. Calbert got into it, then Nover gets involved and P. and G. Graham are right there to back Nover up. The toughness of this team was front and center every time they suited up. This tape should be a mandatory view to all current players if they want to know what Indiana basketball is all about. -
Eron Gordon ruled ineligible @ Cathedral
schoosier replied to BlueDevil's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Isn't Cathedral a private school? Their academics are probably better than IPS so wouldn't this be an easy out? How about all the talent at Park Tudor? Please tell me all their athletes just came for academics also. IHSAA and NCAA are starting to parallel in their enforcement guidelines. If I was his dad, just send him to Oak Hill and lobby a D1 school for an assistants job in two years. -
Sure looks like Troy's mom agreed with my post. Just proves these players, parents, and recruits do not like to be publicly called out by their coach. As far as he is concerned there is no doubt nor speculation.
-
I'm sure all of our players love to be called out publicly by their head coach. I disagree with you on Creans motives for doing this publicly. If you watch any of his press conferences, this is very similar to them. He has never had a problem discussing his players shortcomings but usually never finds the words to discuss his. This is the type of coach he is and will continue to be. I think it is shallow and not the best way to build warriors and team unity. I also think it gives your recruiting competitors more ammunition since most recruits and parents won't go for it either. Why don't we ask Troys mom how she feels? Then it will be coming straight from hotmom's mouth.

Hoosiers jumping from ADIDAS to Jordan Brand??
schoosier replied to Bobman1's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Where is the return on investment for Nike buying us out? I could see it after our current contract is up, but not before then. Our flagship program underachieved last year and prospects of it continuing don't look much better. Most pundits predict more of the same and we may be looking at a new staff this time next year. We should be happy we have Adidas although I personally feel Nike is a better product. -
Along the same lines that I feel about his tweets, I am not real supportive of telling everyone how little Troy worked on his game last year. Especially near the bottom of the team. I like the praise that he's working his butt off now, but why tell everyone including recruits that you will be publicly called out on what your weaknesses. I don't see how it builds cohesiveness and trust that coach has your back. Would you want to go to into battle for him? This just goes back to my earlier comments about desperation and not good for team unity.

The SEC has basically said if the NCAA does not allow more benefits to the student athlete, they will either start a division IV or leave. These athletes are making the schools a ton of money and a full scholarship does not allow for extra $ for the athletes nor does it cover every expense. These kids cannot work while on scholarship, and the communists have already caved by allowing extra meals and now talking of guaranteed schollies. Here in SC Coach Spurrier has come out in support of giving these revenue sport players some pocket money for dates, etc... I think it would help eliminate these hangers on in cases such as UNC and Ohio St, and it would ease the burden a lot of the athletes that come from under priviledged backgrounds. Plus the way the NCAA has selective enforcement makes me believe they may go the way of horse and buggy as their favoratism is blantantly obvious.

Ha ha read my response to UNC troubles thread. Maybe I need to go buy a lottery ticket. Fact remains the Myles Brands of the NCAA are more worried about this happening vs the complete breakdown happening at UNC or Miami. This just makes me hope the power 5 conferences get together and say fu we're going on our own. The ivory towers are coming down. Athletes make the NCAA and soon the revenue producers will be getting paid accordingly. But, if you don't want to go to class, go pro.

Summer school at IU was absolutely the best. Small college feel with access to all the hot greek girls that were mostly unattainable during the regular school year. Smaller classes with shorter duration although meeting daily and longer class periods. Probably my most favorate times at IU although I worked 35 hours per week. Back on track...I just personally feel this hard core motivational tweets reek of desperation and concern as well as lacking self confidence. This time of year yes the athletes need to work hard on their games as well as hard as being a student and all that it entails. Todays athletes just don't go for some maniacal coach basically calling them out in a public forum such as twitter, and I think that's what he's doing. Summer is for recharging and being a college student combined with some summer league ball and mostly working on your weaknesses. You start ramping up in fall and build momentum thru the season to hopefully peak in March. Coach needs to back off and take a chill pill.
-
Ha ha very true. My point being this may be our best way to nuetralize the lack of size from this team. Combine with a press or 3/4 or 1/2 court trap and we may have something. Unfortunately a lot of depth is needed to do this, see Arkansas national championship, so we just may not have enough players. Another option would be to take the air out of the ball on offense and go into past Wisconsin mode and zone press to take clock off on the defensive end. Crean will have his work cut out for him ths year.

Crean needs to look at some old vhs tapes of the Paul Westhead Loyola Marymount teams. You can win a lot ofgame if you outscore your opponents and this may a way to success for this team. Plus it would be fun to watch!

OT: UNC academic scandal continues...
schoosier replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Ok now you have this all pro wide receiver Gordon getting popped for a dui in Hairstons car. PJ just said they ran into each other in a grocery store and decided to swap cars. Guess who bails Gordon out and allegedly was in the car? None other that ole UNC buddy Fats Thomas who just happened to be the one supplying PJ with his rental cars when he had a little trouble once or twice. Nice coincidence. Fats just happens to be a convicted felon with a lot of access not only to UNC athletes but all pro NFL players. He is either a bag man for agents(most likely) or one for the Heels. And everyone used to say the Carolina Way. Yeah we get it. -
OT: UNC academic scandal continues...
schoosier replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
One of the Deans at UNC blew this wide open. She said a high % of football and bball players couldn't read at a 4 th grade level. I use to root for them especially when Indiana Mr. Basketball Dave Colescott out of Marion went there. Now, they are not far behind UK as one of my most hated teams. The NC flagship university has been caught yet they will deny it. And why wouldn't they? The NCAA will probably go after SMU and Larry Brown again. The football team was caught getting parking tickets paid for, players cheating from a tutor hired by former head coach Butch Davis, and assistant coaches with ties to agents that are currently on trial. If lack of institutional is actually still a penalty, I would think this is the poster child. -
You may be correct but after the Sampson years, doing anything to bypass NCAA contact laws looks shady. And I don't buy that everyone else does it excuse. Its like showing up at a recruits high school the day after contact period ends and saying you didn't realize what day it was except this is technically not a violation.
-
My guess is he is still being vetted by the university. Dotting i's and crossing t's so as not to have something come back on us. They also may be waiting on a contract to be signed and waiting on all the lawyer stuff.

Very bad timing imo but they must have gotten more bads news from Dr. Conversation probably went something like this. "Peter, you're still not healthy and prognosis is not good long term. Because of this I am willing to keep you on scholarship as medical hardship but you will not be able to play. You are a good kid and we want to keep you in the program". Peter says "I think I can still play; I understand and can you help me find another school?" Other than timing which may have been because of prognosis, I think Crean did a good job waiting to see if he could one day contribute. Obviously he won't for us, but I wish him the best. I think he had a ton of upside and I certainly liked him as a project over Jobe, Bawa and Guy Marc. Good luck Peter Jurkin!

Crean wanted Harris bad enough to commit a recruiting violation in the process. Also, shout out to my PHHS home boy Dunham. Kids like him are the ones you need to take risks on if you're not so sure they can contibute. Way before these project centers imo.
