Soon to RETIRE Coach Woodson Thread

I kind of disagree. Sometimes you need less chiefs and more indians. If you can find a place for him to fit, having a guy like that is a net plus. -

Agreed. At least not early. All this talk about the “transition” is BS. If he’s gone, launch him and move on to the next guy. Takes a few hours, max. It would be so IU to drag this out. My guess is the Buckner crew is trying to rally the troops and thwarting the ultimate decision. Best we can hope for is in the next week or two Woodson will announced he’s retiring at the end of the season. They’ll do it before the next home game hoping he can pick up a win or two at Ohio State and NW — try to have a positive vibe to fall back on. -

I can vouch for that. Kid was there when he was a freshman/sophomore. They had issues with him just being a dck. -

Why? If they aren't doing their job, why should they be protected for any arbitrary time? Wouldn't you rather set goals for each year and then be evaluated on the progress toward those goals? Goals in areas such as HS recruiting, portal recruiting, NIL income, player development (including strength/speed/agility), Offense/defense systems & stats, etc. If you're hitting those metrics, guess what, the wins and losses will take care of themselves. If you suck in those areas, then you should hit the road, no matter what year it is. -

And yet that is exactly what "The King" decided to do because he had zero interest in going to HS gyms and recruiting HS players. That was clear by year 2 and definitely 3, yet you think he deserved a year 4, where he had to bring in the mother load of portal players? SMH. -

What specific "demands" must be met in the first couple (ie; 2) of years? -

I'll never understand the "optics" of firing a coach who's had a mediocre record, no recruiting, and failed to build a foundation for a program, who didn't meet his stated goals of competing for championships. Seems clear to me. -

That's kind of the thing. The question isn't whether a coach "deserves" another year. The question is there a better option out there to coach my team. Back before the Cubs finally won the World Series again, they had a coach in his first year -- a run of the mill guy who checked the boxes and could lead the team. Then Joe Maddon became available and they quickly fired the old guy and hired Maddon. And eventually won a World Series. They did the same thing upgrading from David Ross to Craig Counsell. Right now, you could say there are at least 100 guys who would be an upgrade over Woodson. -

Yep, it's a numbers game. You have to get in it to win it. -

Understood. But look where we are now. You always want to have a better option before firing a coach if they have some success. Not fire him, and then figure it out. -

That's the thing that stands out. The IU brand still attracted some Dudes. Unlike GA. Don't need the Lord Jesus himself. Just a competent coach who can get it done. -

So the twitter burners have mentioned some "health issues" with the team as a "reason" why they aren't playing well. I assume it's deeper than Malik's injury. Any insight? -

Not going to rehash the Crean dismissal, but there were all sorts of red flags besides the sweet 16 losses which showed the program was trending down and justified the decision. He was kind of a bumbling, fumbling, dude. My understanding is he was a little "corny" and "goofy" to work with. Add the in-state recruiting issues, the "Creaning" (which is expected now with the portal), and his lack of defensive balance, off the court issues, etc., you could make a case for letting him go and trying to step up to someone better. Problem is IU spit the bit and didn't go with someone better. In hindsight, the Crean dismissal may have been a mistake. But, Tom Crean is a perfect example that even a marginal coach with the right attributes can have some success at IU. Imagine what could happen with a good to great coach. (PS: Not bashing Crean. I am grateful that he took the job when IU was facing the abyss and got us back on the map. I thought he did a very good job from where he started. Just couldn't sustain it. Definitely deserves our respect.) -

I am so sick of "the high expectations" and the "fans are the problem" bull crap. People act like it's rocket science. It isn't. Successful coaches have a handful of characteristics you can model. Successful programs have the same. Create a profile and follow it. The goals and expectations are simple -- it's a numbers game. The more you make the tournament, the better your chances to advance. So get yourself into the tournament as much as possible. For the BIG10 that means what, top 7 or 8. It's bonus if you're competing top 3 for the championship every few years. But you have to get to the tourney. Once you're in the tourney, you'll win some, you'll lose some. Win 2 games and you're in the sweet 16. 1 more and you're "elite." From there anything can happen. You do it enough times with a level of consistency, the odds are in your favor to make the final 4 and beyond. If you're not stumbling, bumbling, idiot as a coach you can get this done. Heck, even Tom Crean was doing it -- just couldn't get over that hump. :) -
