That was a Miller Special
-
Almost surely, right? He barely played until tournament time.
-
Love this. And they’re different players but X and Nowell have some similarities
-
I think it’s a fallacy to assume Woodson PREFERS playing two PGs at once. JHS was always going to start alongside X, which is possible given his size and their shooting ability. If you have a clone, sure, we’ll take him. But X / the offense doesn’t need that. Having multiple ballhandlers, multiple drivers, multiple shooters, switchable defenders? Absolutely. And of course if you’ve got two worthy PGs they’ll play together sometimes.

Not looking it up but I seem to recall one of those 3 game suspensions during his time.

Kokomo Monster (2024) - C Flory Bidunga to Kansas

Seems like you might! -
Appears a female student has that last name, per the IU directory. No idea of relation.

Duncomb was the one scholarship guy I felt sure would transfer out. I know there are other possibilities but it seems possible — not likely, but possible — everyone else stays.

That would rock because it would be good AND funny. Fwiw his brother, a senior at Blackhawk Christian, is planning to walk on at Purdue. Obviously that could change too.

Coaching Changes Nationally

Cupps, Newton, Galloway, plus as-yet-unseen top classes in ‘24 and ‘25…I would bet he coaches at least three more years, maybe four. But I could see hanging it up at that point. Obviously without commitments and due to freer player movement it’s hard to know EXACTLY what that looks like. But if IU really skims the cream from those classes, he’d get a shot at adding a big banner. -

I got curious to find Shrews’ old PSU contract to see about an IU clause, but it’s nowhere to be found. As a public school employee, that’s unusual By contrast, you can easily find James Franklin’s, or Mike Woodson’s. That illustrates PSU’s biggest issue vs. ND: just very basically less interest in hoops. -
This appears to be the form, or a version of it. Take this with the Bylaw @BleedCubbieBlue brought up and I think we have solved a bit of a mystery this morning. Note the following: Reason(s) for Denial: (if applicable, check all that apply) -Participation exceeded three or 30 percent limit -Injury/Illness occurred in the second half of the season -Competition in the second half of the season -Lack of contemporaneous medical documentation from treating physician demonstrating incapacitation Based on the Hoosier Classic bylaw exclusion, X can’t be denied for the first three of the four above. We can assume IU has copious medical documentation. So he should not meet any condition of denial.

Yes, great point

You didn’t ask me but my guess is that Cupps will be asked to play about 8 mpg as a backup. Nice to have Galloway in case he’s not ready, but Galloway’s best role offensively is as a secondary initiator, not a primary one.
-
Not quite, he said he hadn’t coached a post-dominant offense. I.e. if life serves you TJD you maximize what you can get from it. I’d assume what he said was also a better, more positive way to say it than alighting his other forwards’ natural ability, athleticism, or lack of development
-
My inference do far on PGs is that not pursuing one is an indication they know more than we do about X’s waiver chances

Certainly get the questions about Ike’s fit. My hunch is he’ll get all the minutes he can handle somewhere else so this will be moot. My hunch is that the staff sees a roster coming back with one true big, Reneau, one undersized 4, and one 5 who’s given them zero high-leverage minutes in two years. Even if those two stay they may want some frontcourt insurance. My hunch is whatever guy(s) they add at the 4 and 5 will be less proven than Ike unless they’re clearly a 4 with shooting/ball skills a la Ledlum. Maybe a 5 who doesn’t offer much offensively besides ORebs, screens, dunks, but who can anchor the defense…think Tariq Owens. I like Ledlum and assume he’s the target at the 4? Think he can drive and defend, my hunch is he can shoot better in a lower usage role with an ace PG like X. Really like Timberlake at the 2 and assume they’d start Galloway alongside in such an arrangement.

If IU ends up with a grant or two to play with after packing in some transfers I’d be happy to see them kick tires here
-
For what it’s worth I read some of his high school scouting reports and they really had him pegged as a good shooter. Obviously the numbers haven’t borne that out but as @Demo says the right staff could believe he’s worth a flyer.

Coaching Changes Nationally

A lot of the quick take hot boards from reasonably informed people are stuffed with high major retreats, some I think could work (Tim Miles) and some I think would not (a former IU coach from PA). They know more than me but that seems somewhat boring for a place that just succeeded with an in-conference assistant -

Torvik’s too-early 2023 projections are up. IU slots in at #42…33rd if you add Xavier and make no other changes using the rostercast tool. Of course lots will change for the Hoosiers and other teams to alter that. That basically projects IU to be about as good overall next year as this year. -

I’m hootin’ and hollerin’ -
Yeah, and if you tried to explain at the time it was fine they wanted to say it was some sort of canary in a coal mine

Would’ve guessed Gillis, he’d make a National fake tough guy team (this is in re: whiteboard with a hole in it in PU’s locker room)

Lotta folks including a head coach making $3M wanted “empty scholarship” over Jake Laravia, who turned into a 1st round pick within 3 years. The more I think about the Miller era the less it makes sense
