This is correct and yet I’m confused on a couple points. 1. he spent two years at Evansville (RS, FR) then three at Memphis (SO, JR, SR). 2. shouldn’t he have a COVID year like anyone else who played in 2019-2020 OR 2021? 3. His Wikipedia page says he played a post grad year…that doesn’t account for how he got to be 27. Wouldn’t most guys be 19 post-grad, 20 RS, then 21-24 the four years he played? Did he finish HS at 21?

IUBB vs Marian (exhib) Friday, 11.03.23 @ 6:30 on BTN+

1. Just exhibitions, but I’m pretty confident all ten guys we expect to make up the rotation can actually do positive things in high major hoops dependably. 2. Frontcourt shooting is going to make it hard for opponents to defend the rim. 3. IU can switch and/or X-out a lot defensively and thus dribble penetration is unlikely to be very effective from opponents. They’ll probably give up plenty of 3 attempts as a result (though they do a nice job of keeping them out of the corner). 4. Probably can’t take TOO much from TO% in exhibitions except to say: 12 TOs in 141 possessions is terrific. 5. I was a little worried that too much of this season’s outcome rested on how ready Cupps and Gunn were gonna be. Feeling pretty confident about that now. 6. Wish we’d gotten to see two games of Banks so far, but he continue to be a sneaky good offensive player by getting to the line. Like Gunn, if the shot is there — and I buy it in both cases! — they’re plus two way guys. 7. Currently a little concerned about defensive rebounding. 8. Walker looks like a better fit with this squad than I thought. Crafty and athletic enough to fit nicely with better scorers, good touch around the rim to maybe keep some bench units afloat if he needs to, better passer than I thought. Wonder how often he’ll guard down the defensive spectrum, as he seems like he could mark some big wings. -

I had one personal interaction with Coach Knight when I was a child, and in the interest of maintaining my anonymity I’ll just say it was quintessentially Knight: humorous, slightly too coarse for his audience, playfully gruff, and ultimately about connecting with my brother and me.

(2024) PF - Derik Queen to Maryland

No inside info but you’d rather be IU than Maryland here, right? If a ‘24 Maryland commit, his family, and Tipton did this I’d feel pretty bad about IU’s chances. -

2024 PG Daquan Davis to Florida State

Yep, also helps to remember that these rankings are oriented towards ultimate/pro potential. So sometimes a guard barely over 6’ who isn’t an athletic anomaly has a bit of an uphill climb to a long pro career. -

Not to put too fine a point on it but a TD after the pick, and holding on for a win? That might save a guy’s job. And they didn’t even look at the end zone. IU clearly needs to move on but this sort of talent was always on the roster. You can get a decent squad together at IU and a better staff can make competing on the road against top 10 teams the expectation, not a surprise. -

Yep, the cowardly drive was as much a fireable offense as anything else this season -
Can’t imagine why he’d walk but yes, I think based on Dolson’s handling of the Archie Miller situation, I’d expect this to be it for Allen.

Wonder if there’s any NIL silver lining for Queen with Boogie making another move. I.e. is there a “target B” NIL package that Boogie would’ve been in line to pursue that now slides to Queen? We’ll never know, I guess. -
…and I should add that Sparks/Ware may be able to play together if e.g. Sparks marks Edey or Dainja or Dickinson while Ware can roam helpside guarding a 4, whether just to give Malik a rest or otherwise.
-
Agree, Sparks is a great option because: 1. He’s a good, if limited, player. Even if Ware and Reneau are healthy and very good, the sophomore wings contribute efficiently, Mgbako plays quite a bit of 4, Sparks will still have a role. 2. Reneau played less as a frosh because of foul trouble and TJD. If Sparks takes his minutes, I think it’ll be nights when Malik hits two or three early fouls, Sparks fills in nicely, and CMW rides the hot hand. 3. For all his upside, there are downside risks aside from injury and foul trouble for Ware. Sparks is a crucial insurance policy for that, whether it’s chronic or just a couple nights.

I share the various complaints about adidas’ IU apparel deal common among fans, but this will be a good thing if IU stays with them. Now, if the long-rumored Nike HS league comes along, and IU switches, it’s probably a wash or better.

Accounting for misses: one long. Two short. One left rim. Two in the cylinder, rattling out. -

“Come play with too many non-shooters and don’t expect to get better while you’re here.” (I kid, I know he’s had stud guards since at least Rose…though I do question who’s improved as a player, or boosted their draft stock, under him.) -

Yeah Cal’s recent results have consistently disappointed their (toxic) fan base and national expectations. Not sure why anyone wants to opt into that, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -

On IG at least, I noticed just the official UKbb page and ‘24 commit Somto Cyril. Possible I missed someone. Also, someone alluded to his dad liking some seemingly pro-UK tweets, but I didn’t find anything I’d consider pro-UK in his likes. -

In case of UGA/UT it also tells me that 1. Football has all the $ they can use, 2. Thus the marginal NIL $ at even traditional football powers goes a lot farther with hoopers. -
What were the best pre-1998 CBB hoops preview magazines? Or more accurately, who were the most trusted recruiting analysts/rankers during that period? I have a pretty meticulous IU recruit spreadsheet that has, I think, every scholarship player from the HS class of ‘98 forward, since that’s what’s readily available online.

Follows all these IU-related IG accounts plus Cuban. That seems promising.
