Remembering all of a sudden that Tyme spent all summer insisting double-big lineups with Ballo and Reneau would work, acting disdainfully towards anyone who disagreed -
Creighton has real money — would guess less NIL than IU but they’re no joke.
-
Actually he was fired for cause from his dream job
-
Do you really value the Knight connection or something? Even if he was a perfect choir boy he wouldn’t be in my top 5. Clearly a good coach, I have my opinion and I think it’s all moot since it won’t be him. But I don’t really get the obsession.
-
I’m like extreeeeeemely convinced it won’t be Beard so it’s interesting that two people claiming to have some connections said it was him today. I’m still extremely convinced it’s not him.
-
I also think that if that’s Woody’s take it makes some intuitive sense for someone aware of/interested in the search but not necessarily plugged in. The guy who said he likes his job and the guy who got an extension are out, this guy who knew Bob Knight really wants it? Lots of folks turning into the game tonight are in the same info environment he might be and feel similarly. Doesn’t mean they’re right.

McDermott to me is in the Cronin tier, different pros and cons and might be a temperamentally better fit but you trade some of that with age and it’s about a wash. Good coaches, would probably not bank on an IU title under either but Final 4(s)? Maybe.
-
Agree — not saying he'd fail, clearly a good coach, not totally convinced it’d be “bad” but I think there’s a little downside risk
-
I believe that what your friend was told (and what you’ve relayed) is what Woody believes.
-
Salute, actually didn’t know this though I know where Fuzzy’s from. How’s he feel about IU hoops?
-
I’m all ears, is it the weekend/search firm stuff or something more recent?

This essentially happened with the Cig hire

FWIW the Pelicans re-signed Cody last summer essentially just to trade him with Dejounte Murray trade to make the trade work within the rules of the salary cap. Then the Hawks sent him to the Rockets for the rights to a 29-year-old Frenchman who was the final pick of the 2017 draft who’s never come to the league and never will in an attempt to shed payroll. The remaining two years on the three year contract he signed last summer are not guaranteed; I assume this is the end of the line in the league. My best guess — someone here may know personally — is he intended to retire last summer but was (of course!) agreeable to making an additional $3.5M to not play so the teams could make the trade work, and that his salary thru the deadline was the price of doing business for the Hawks.

almost not worth addressing but I can’t sleep: Moot, of course, if he’s not returning to coaching let alone IU, but Stevens returning to coach in college is maybe most like Pitino doing so? They’re much different guys but universally agreed to be excellent coaches, and with a strong track record of college success. The other guys who’ve made the transition lately — mostly the Ewing/Howard/Mullins/Woodson alma mater types, I assume? — have, uh, not had that sort of reputation. Juwan was thought to be a rising coaching star and really lost his shine at M. Woody is a late career guy who was well-liked and undone by hubris, bad roster/lineup choices, being stuck in 2004, things Knicks fans might’ve warned about. An inability to distinguish the difference is a sign you might have some blinders on.

Yeah that’s what interesting, truly, is Mike Woodson said in his intro press conference that the goal was to compete for conference and national championships. That wasn’t foisted upon him. He was correct: those are (some of) the goals at IU. So now to want the story to be retirement AND complain to broadcasters that 21 wins/year isn’t good enough is rich. By the standards he set for himself he hasn’t succeeded!

The job that might take Quin Snyder to Texas is the San Antonio Spurs job, should they do an open search, assuming it opens. I doubt he goes to UT or any other college gig.
-
Absolutely. Offenses have more control over the game, and good offense beats good defense, so you want to be the best defense you can be but the other side is more important.
-
Yeah I think it’s possible he’s eventually a good player but he’s going to need to learn what a good shot is, and he has even less of an idea than most frosh. I have no idea about his attitude except what you can see watching a game, but his current coach encourages his worst tendencies offensively.
-
I mean both infractions are bad but uhhhhh
-
Sounds to me like it’s about leverage. He’s proven himself deserving of more than he was making. But he doesn’t want to be tied to ISU tooooooo closely, especially if his current AD leaves.
-
Yeah I believe it’s the same extension, wa s reported earlier (pressure campaign from one side or the other in Ames?) but seems to have just been signed. Also, I know Otz’s wife is an Iowa State hoops legend but she’s from Australia. Not sure he’s stuck there, the contract details here do not present a hurdle to hiring him for IU.

Actual Otz news from an IA newspaper reporter: https://twitter.com/ben_hutchens_/status/1895264994704724122?s=46 https://twitter.com/ben_hutchens_/status/1895269434832626117?s=46 great coach, absolutely attainable if he’s targeted.

That’s not what MYB said. Osterman said there was chatter to this effect out there (on this board and elsewhere) but he didn’t think it to be the case. Which all public indications would suggest it’s not the case…but it’s interesting Zach couldn’t categorically rule it out.
-
The Iowa where the NIL partner had to pay players out of his own pocket to fulfill contracts because they don’t raise enough? I believe you but that’s not where I’d prefer.
