Idk, could be legit interest going forward with Devoe. Corey Evans has also been a bit shotty in reporting lately. I think IU knows they're in good shape with RP

Devoe looks cool. So do a lot of combos. I've been trying to find a whole game but can't and the offer didn't make a ton of sense which was my questioning. He's athletic, he's 6'4...he's going to have some cool highlights. He handles it loose like most CG. Has some flashy passes. Idk, like I said I need more than highlights for a possible PG

Phinisee is a pure PG. No more of this "can he handle the role" stuff with RJ/Cujo/DG. Phinisee is a PG in that he makes others better, you surround him with talent. He holds onto the ball. He leads the team on both ends. Controls the game. Not his first year, that isn't what I'm claiming. But you swing for an elite PG still for next year. Phinisee logs minutes off the bench fresh and soph...his team junior/senior.

I see the consensus is swaying away from Phinisee. I'll remain on board. He's important right now and this staff knows it.

    Hoping it's an actual PG.
  9. Sorry, still digging around on this.
  10. Agreed, unless dominoes start falling before he makes his decision. But as I see it now, I'm with you.

I wouldn't put money on it right now but thats because I don't trust what I hear out of NA. IU seems to be right there but not the leader

Tough question. I imagine there will be a bit of a shift here in the last two July eval periods. Phinisee and a swing for the fences type guy?

So that was a big day and a half or so, huh? Not only for the actual team but for Archie, recruiting perception, and '18 and '19 recruiting. And credit to staff, as well. Immediate results...Ostrom and Schilling seem to be having the biggest impact so far- as expected. Ostrom on Race, and Hunter- to some degree- though seems it was Archie there. Schilling/Flint/Archie on Damezi...Schilling also had Henry pretty close and is right there w Phinisee. IU currently has 3 grants for next year still available. Things could get a little messy if you bring 3 more in because that's essentially a 6 man class with Race being a freshman. If that 3rd is a Romeo, well- that's different. He counts against you for one year and you're back to a balanceable team. But, IU is in a great spot to be picky. The immediate need is PG. I see no way IU says no to Phinisee even if pursuing higher touted prospects. It's simply too risky and Phinisee isn't scaring off the likes of Garland, Duke, etc. We talked about this earlier so no need to get into it. Other need? A big? Swing for the fences on guys like Moses Brown. or wait till '19 where you're in w some instant impacts. But looking forward, and back to praise of the staff, Schilling (somewhat expectedly) has IU back in it and maybe leading with Keion Brooks. Archie and Schilling back in it with RL. The program has gotten the jolt it needed with this staff but there is still work to be done. IU is just in a great place right now. And looking forward with Ostrom...Minnesota is a talent hotbed the last few years..I'm not joking. Ostrom has IU in it till the end with Hurt in '19 and has already produced as stated above. '19's class appears to be on the smaller size. Add 3 (in '18) and no attrition you have 1 grant (Morgans). Add 2 (in '18) or the Romeo scenario and no attrition you have 2 (in '18) and so on and so forth. Though attrition is bound to happen, it's looking like 2-3. Stabilizing. Focus the approach, narrow in- Hurt, Brooks, Wiseman, Watford, Stewart. This approach is much more effective, in my very humble opinion. But cannot overstate what the last two days meant for this staff, Archie Miller, and IU.
  14. He has a real knack for finding space. Rotates around a zone D as the ball moves, waits for his man to turn in man and finds space. His ability to get open off the ball is well above avg and gets him those open looks over and over again.

A freshmen PG handling that role is rare. You're going to need a guy like Garland to do that. Phinisee can develop into that, but I don't see him being that in year one. That's why I'm saying you take him for the future, but still pursue a guy who can help next year.

To be clear, I'd welcome the kid to IU if that is what he decides. He may be a good defender, but I don't know that. My concern is on the offensive end. His shot needs work. He relies on his athleticism and body to get him to the rim. That said, he does seem to have a great sense of control on his drives and around the basket. Elite in transition. But, my concern, is players like this that rely on being more athletic and just bigger, to get to the rim and how it translates to the next level, where you're in like the 60th percentile as opposed to the 90/95th. Maybe he figures it out, idk. But the skill level isn't what is driving that ranking. I see a Rawle Alkins without skill. But, remember how I started this post...

    2018 General Recruiting Thread

I'm pretty much with you on the overall feeling here. I, too, last fall was downplaying the anxiety on these boards with regards to recruiting. This year is different for a few reasons. 1) New coach 2) Very small sample of how Archie can recruit at this level (thinking UA) 3) Unusual amount of top 100 kids (though, I've said a million times it's a numbers game and dominoes fall your way) 4) large expected class These next three weeks (July 12 – 16: (2) July 19– 23: (3) July 26– 30) are crucial, imo, for Archie. And let me be clear, I'm not freaking out- and I see no reason anyone should. IU was just identifying major impact players like TB and TW at this stage...that said, you can't rely on that. My biggest angst involves where IU is at with the kids they're recruiting. Something needs to change here, someone needs to break for IU and get the ball rolling. I think IU could (and should) press Phinisee for a commitment. Kids begin to recruit others, and I don't care that he's had a lousy spring/summer. Phinisee solves your PG problem in the long term, while not hindering your efforts to address the same problem in the short term. You need to fill 5/6 spots. No brainer for me. One thing that I've heard from two AAU coaches is just that Archie is different. Different in relation to Crean, that is. Things are planned, coaches are informed- kids know when he is there for them. Basically, he's typical in his approach to recruiting where Crean was not. One thing that worries me is that I was told he doesn't flatter these kids. It's more, " we're giving you the opportunity to play for Indiana" type of deal. Frankly, that's the way it should be, imo, but is that an effective approach with the current generation? Time will tell, I suppose. So I've been out and about the last few months but am interested to see who everyone is wanting in the 2018 class? Dort is seriously interested. I'm not a huge fan. Race Thompson seems to be winding down his recruitment. I don't know a ton about him outside of Dad went to Minn but they have a similar commit for the class. I think IU needs to land one of Thompson or Jerome Hunter or identify and really press another big during this eval period. Langford- I hear a different story on every day of the week it seems. I truly trust no one in NA lol. Saw someone mention backing out would be the smart move if not for perception. I whole-heartedly disagree. You put everything you've got into this one until Tim Langford or Jim Shannon calls you and says to stop. PG- As I said, take Phinisee. It doesn't hurt while recruiting guys like Garland, Duke, Carey- but I do think it's important to get someone who can handle the role next year- and that is not Phinisee, imo. Then you've got your wings to go along w Dort. The Damezi Anderson's of the world. Idk, there are a ton of them and I assume IU ends up with one we know of and one we don't.
