Bender is definitely involved but I guess no one is sure of to what degree. Bender has a ton of heat around him which hopefully means this one is clean. I'm split on this. Visiting Kansas then saying they're out of it that night sounds shady, but there were rumors of the crowded backcourt and a potential redshirt so maybe that was the problem. To me though, all that would have been known prior to the visit... He has visited IU in the past so, contrary to the report he may visit, wouldn't be shocked if he commits w/o a visit. I'm not sure anything out there is clear but I've gathered a bit of information on it. A lot of it is funky because of the prep school he attended and the high schools prior to that. One thing is clear, he is eligible by NCAA requirements. In the case of Oregon, there is chatter that the question involves two online classes that Kasongo took somewhere in the past, maybe at Faith Christian Academy. Oregon is denying him based on those classes. The issue is, why are they denying him...well, Oregon's athletic department has been in more trouble than they've been out of recently so the speculation is some administrators are tightening up admissions for athletes. Now, again, why Lyle and Kasonga? Both at prep schools, both with not the best influences around them...I don't know. The cynic would be led to believe that the academic admissions reasoning is a cover. Fwiw, a lot of this is not any sort of inside information. Pat Forde of Yahoo! did a pretty good job outlining the ship Dana Altman is steering at Oregon. If involved, Brandon Bender is trouble. Kasongo definitely did consider Bender his mentor while at East Ridge High School in Kentucky and Bender followed him from there. Say what you want about Crean, but I don't think you'll see them get involved in something unless they are comfortable that it is clean and they seem pretty involved at the moment. I can try to explain more after work, but here is a link to an article citing Forde's article I mentioned... LINK -

I'm not sure but I think he could help. There could be a little shady business here, not academically, but I don't think IU would take him if that is the case. IU compliance does not operate in the gray area, to my knowledge, after Sampson. -

Canada doesn't mess around w recent criminal charges. Someone may need to check me on this, but I also believe if you are not a US born citizen a visa is required, otherwise, just a passport. Not sure any of that clears the athletic dept. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

2015 Basketball Recruiting Class
hoosierpap replied to KelleyHoosh's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
I saw in some recruits thread things got slightly derailed to the overall 15 class so I thought I'd bring this up here to avoid CCG having to go back and clean that thread up. Some positives can be drawn, if you're into rankings and such, from the 24/7 class calculator. I urge those who are to try it out. Now before I get slammed for being optimistic, I realize that this is all "what if's" being that we don't have a commit in 2015. Here is what I've found... For reference, I used the 2014 class to gauge a finished class. Duke brought in the top class for 2014 and received a score of 52.31. 2 Kentucky 52.04 3 North Carolina 51.40 4 Kansas 51.34 5 UNLV 51.24 6 Arizona 51.10 7 UCLA 50.84 8 Ohio State 50.71 9 Florida 50.44 10 Louisville 50.13 IU came in at 18th with a 47.84... Now, moving onto the 15 class...At this point, you have to think IU's most likely commits are Shake Milton, Juwan Morgan, and Nick Marshall, and Ogugua Anunoby(will decide shortly, Crean does well in sprints). There are a lot of variables here, (Milton, Marshall, Anunoby underrated imo---likelihood of all 4 committing slim, etc..) but fwiw, that would put us at a 44.96. As it stands now, and don't put much into this, that would give us the 7th best class in 15. Again, that doesn't mean much because the 15 class is largely uncommitted. Now, referencing the 2014 class, 44.96 would land us the 27th best recruiting class which isn't great. I've been preaching that IU's season could determine the recruiting momentum. If IU does well enough and Crean's position at Indiana stabilizes moreso, they could be in a position to hit a home run target with the amount of playing time available at the 5. We may not know his name yet because I'm talking about a spring signee. Out of the names we do know, Thomas Bryant is still a bit intriguing. Syracuse is his lean, I have that on pretty good word, but the Orangemen may not be waiting around. I won't get into my whole Thomas Bryant thing but he is looking around. To stay on the point of this post, adding a 5 star in the spring (not even necessarily Bryant) would significantly change the class. Let's use Bryant here...adding him to the class above would make it a 49.14 which, referencing the 2014 classes, would put IU at the 15th best class and addressing a major need. Now you can play around and sub out some of those guys and throw in whoever you think IU has a shot with. (Derrick Jones, Matthew McQuaid , Terrance Mann, anyone who says they don't plan on signing until spring) and you can see how this class could come together. Try it out, plug in who you want, give me your score and we'll cross reference where that could put the class. I am fully aware that this may be the most hypothetical post ever made but it's somewhat fun and this place could use a little optimism during the summer coming off a bad year. EDIT: I suppose a link would help: 24/7 class calculator -

Dirty Recruiting..."In Search of the Next Andrew Wiggins"
hoosierpap posted a topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Slow days so I figured we could throw out this article for discussion. It is a pretty interesting read describing the illegal recruiting tactics that are a part of the AAU scene. The article follows Team SCAN with IU targets Tyus Battle and Thomas Bryant, most notably. Reeves Wiedeman does a great job, imo. "Accepting cash or gifts can jeopardize a player’s eligibility, but throughout a summer on the E.Y.B.L. circuit, I watched $20 bills change hands from coaches to handlers; from parents to recruiting analysts; and from coaches to players — that last case being scandalous only to those who maintain a strict belief in the virtues of amateurism on the part of teenagers while adults make considerable sums of money off them."
