What affect will NIL have on recruiting going forward?
HoosierHoops1 replied to Iufan71's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yes. The difference is IU was setting up NIL things for Indiana University student athletes. not Football and Men's Basketball. We were the 1st to have an NIL directory with contact info for players to be contacted regarding NIL deals. Those who have had a hand in the most cheating, will benefit FIRST, from NIL deals, but the rest will catch up and Indiana will be able to hype attractive incomes to recruits. Who knows if NIL has played any factor in our recruiting thus far? JHS and Jakai didn't seem to worry. -

I do not believe there is any current limit on nil earnings. -

Ended up 8-23 for 34.8%. That's reasonable. -

Surprising that highly regarded Kaufman-Renn took the redshirt at PureDoo. -

That season we opened with this win over Kansas, and then smacked around UNC to have the two best early season wins. Then the wheels fell off. -
I don't think the university can have an active roll in helping with NIL.

Likely a Porsche dealer who has been funneling money under the table for 2 decades.
-
The posters printing and distribution company has partnered with a firm representing all basketball players to get NIL $ for the players from poster sales. It is about benchmarks but teams who did cheat will have an advantage.
-
I think posters being pissy towards the Hysterics is coloring their attitudes about the event. Hoosier Hysteria usually has upwards of 12k and Haunted Hall of Hoops seemed to have about 2-3k and half of those were kids in costume. Considering the pandemic et al, I don't think yesterdays event was a bust at all, in terms of attendance. And it certainly wasn't for those who attended (unless they were unaware of the cancelled scrimmage).

That's the thing about the transfer portal, we could have a Oladipo/Sheehey 3 star freshman class and still bring in a ton of super talented, proven upper classmen, that fill every hole.

It's not legal for schools to pay players and it's not legal to give a kid nil $ to come, or to stay. If you sign a 4 year contract with JHS I don't believe remaining a student at Indiana can be a condition of the contract. What's legal is for the student to get paid for their name, image and likeness in various ways. Indiana doesn't (didn't) have people sitting around with the illegal $ ready to hand out. Cheating schools did. so they just hand it out now. Hoosiers that don't want to cheat aren't going to apportion recruitment $.
-
I don't think the cheaters figured out NIL, I think they already had the cheating pipelines from 2020 and prior ready to go before NIL existed.

I don't feel any of the doom and gloom you do. We have done things in our absolutely terrible last 25 years that some teams (that we often fawn over) have never accomplished in their histories. I was meaning 7-8 good seasons with Woody and then the reigns are turned over to Fife, not that Fife replaces a failed Woodson. Those "Cheating" teams had cash money sitting around to be funneled to recruits and players, the old way. NIL let them do it in the open. I bet that dealer supplying that Porche for Tyty Washington wasn't spending his first recruiting money on Kentucky's behalf. Indiana doesn't have the already-in-place under-the-table shady dealers that spent the same money illegally last year. It'll take a moment. We aren't short of the resources just didn't have the pipeline or mindset. I don't think we need a huge season 1, but (if players stay healthy) I believe it'll be a fairly strong one. A Clowney commitment would have been a flip of the switch to 9th and we could add equal or better through decommit or the portal. We'll see.
