Should we stop recruiting five star centers?
mdn82 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Stop recruiting more talented players? I know you have logic behind that, but never. I would prefer more bigs like Luke however. Him ranked around 30 > than anyone who is ranked as high due to upside. Don't care if Luke had no more upside than what he came in with. He came in with 2 feet and BBIQ. That will go a long way when you are 7'. -
Hopefully he stays. He is getting a type of player I like. I know everyone is excited to see what Blackmon brings next season as am I. Robert Johnson is going to be fun to watch. Add those to who else he has brought in and I think he has done a fantastic job. I can also see why he would want to capitalize on his situation now with the uncertainty of next season. Hopefully this plays out well for us.

I think he can coach. I think he can game plan. I think his biggest fault is trusting specific players until it is too late. He puts so much into them he cannot fathom they can fail. So, he is late to adjust a lot. That is why I truly feel that way. He is just too trusting. His system is player decision based. I don't like that, but it is what it is. He does not run a mechanical system. I prefer and grew up with a mechanical type system. You would teach your players what to do within the system. The old adage works here imo. You don't let the prisoners run the asylum because they won't always make the right decision.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I just wanted to ask to humanize this discussion. He is no different than you and I. He just holds more relevance in his position. I can see why he would do what he is doing. He can improve his in game (although I do not know if he is good or bad) by being with the coaches he is with.
Yup. I do believe it. No, I am not crazy. Johnson is a recruiter first and foremost. Unfortunately, he believes himself to be an even better coach. THATS reaching.
Did you ever at one point in your life felt like you were learning something to grow? Or did everyone around you label you 2 years on the job? If you had a better opportunity would you grow or would you listen to people say you should only be in one area cause you will be no good in that other area? Serious question. You know I thought of adding this, but don't mean for this to turn into a Crean bashing tool. I thought about the money Crean makes. I thought about the money his assistants make. JBJ is coming to IU because of the work Kenny put in after he came on board. Many people forget that. He did not instantly decommit because of the knee injury and KJ. Kenny kept working JBJ. When it became apparent Calipari was in on this Crean jumped in more too. I think for continuity of the players Kenny mostly recruited (successfully) it would be nice of Crean to give up a couple of hundred thousand to his assistants or match IU. It would look good on him and make his assistants happier. Dude would still make over $3 million per year. I know that will never happen, but we are talking well below 10% of his contract. It is a lot, but in the overall scheme it would pay dividends imo.
-
He wouldn't be able to do that. Unless we have coaches quitting Crean cannot make him top assistant. He is our recruiting director and a fine one at that. Don't get me wrong, if he went to Maryland it is to recruit. It is sort of like what the Cubs had to do with Theo Epstein to get him away from Boston, but he is still the GM even if his title and pay don't show it. Assistants don't typically last forever unless you are the right hand man. KJ will probably be no different.

(2014) C Trevor Thompson to OSU
mdn82 replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
I would have to disagree. Most kids don't care about that stuff. They care about proven track record of getting kids to the NBA. That is why we landed Blackmon. That is why we landed Noah. I think our days of landing burger boy bigs might be over for a year or two, but guards we will be fine. Crean (If he is still here after next year) can point to the freedom in his offense for guards. -

Supposedly there are health issues with his father that he can try and do a waiver for. No guarantees and sounds like he will be fine either way since they just got a 5th year in his spot. -
Yeah that was some crazy shit right there.

The only I have with boxing (same as UFC) is I have zero respect for judges. It isn't like they screw 1 out of 10 decisions. It is probably closer to 3 out of 10 which is way too much. Boxing goes to the cards more often than the UFC. I used to love boxing, but the way the judges have killed the sport has just killed my interest outside of a super fight.

Tom Crean piss and moan thread with a little sunshine (lol)
mdn82 replied to Hoosier_Cat_42's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Honestly I think we have upside to surprise. We all know a big in Crean's offense is not a focal point. On top of that we have 4 if not 5 guaranteed talented guards. That is if someone wants to see Rob before they base their opinion. Plus we don't even know who our bigs are. I am not leaning one way or another until I know who is even going to be here. Also, if they ask how he was utilized in the offense, he has said openly he didn't like it. He can say that. We would have mostly agreed with him this year. I don't think that is bashing if that is what it is. For all we know he is being honest about that and saying how much he loved Bloomington. Lets be real. It would be real hard for any player on that team last year to enjoy themselves. They didn't win. Winning cures everything. -

Honestly it is one of those I don't care if it is true or not. Anymore all that is focused on the negative. I am not saying whether or not I like Crean, because that is not the issue here. This is like anything in life that everyone here deals with. You will have some people like you and some that don't. If Noah does really do this, Crean can point to what people said about Noah coming in and then point to his potential top 5 status in a loaded draft. Of all of the high end recruits this year Noah was voted #1 by ESPN before the year to be a potential bust. He was too raw and too small. He is still raw but showed enough to up his status. Also, he put on 20 lbs last summer. On top of that if he blasts Crean, he could also point to every player singing his praises playing professional basketball somewhere. I mean look at the supposed greatest recruiting class of all time to the south. Do you think every prior burger boy is singing the praises of Calipari? You had 3 to 4 kids who were thought of as locks to be top 10 picks in this draft before this year. Now you have 1. Do you think the Harrison twins are going to sing the praises of Calipari in private? Probably not. -

ESPN's Joe Lunardi thinks Crean will be Fired...
mdn82 replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Lol, I live in this state. I work with boosters. I am on these boards. I go to quite a few games. I don't know how a large sample of the fans of this team feel? Don't worry. Not the first or last time someone with 5 posts calls me out. No need to walk through that with me. I will probably just end up being that pricky mod when you cannot get your point across without being a pompous ass. -

Look, I know you are new. I won't be a Purdue Person this time, but let us handle these things without your commentary. There is a reason we say the things we say like that. To both extremes. -
I dunno. I saw it maybe ten minutes after you posted it last night. At the time I'm thinking he meant this as a joke but all it will turn into is another bash Crean thread. I'm not really sure how anyone who has spent any time on this IU board or any other board could think it would do otherwise.
Unfortunately the majority of fans feel Crean's future at IU is short. Every board is a bi-product of that now. Until he shows otherwise it will continue to be that way unfortunately. (2014) SF Josh Cunningham to Bradley
mdn82 replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Baltimore Hoosier, I think you epitomize what is wrong with IU basketball. You are willing to settle for a pretty good team every few years. Most of us want IU to compete on the level of UK, UConn, MSU, UM, Wisconsin, etc. We are not willing to let IU be a mediocre team that hovers around the top 25 every few years. That is not good enough.
Actually UK and UConn missed the tournament last year. Wisconsin hovers around 25 year in and year out with an early exit typically every year. MSU is probably the closest to the exception to your list but had underperformed recently. Basically what you wanted to bash him for is what you aim to be by your list.
