Exactly it is how you use a stat to tell a story. I agree he uses stats to his advantage but who doesn't? However a deflection where you alter the path of the ball is one of the top 3 critical indicators of activity that determine the outcome of a game. Like you said, the stat that matters is w-l. There is a direct correlation between deflections as well as w-l. It is far from a laughable stat. Deflections allow for help defense to collapse. Steals are great but they may be due to a deflection. Deflections allow your defense to settle or catch up with the motion of an offense.

Here is the thing I question. Many people talk a bunch of trash about this stat like it is the most insignificant stat there is. I say go look at games you felt we played good defense and we "were all over the place". Then look at deflections. Then compare them to last night. There is no 100% telling tool to tell a story. There are a bunch of variables that tell a story. Deflections are one of those. Like baseball getting modern with advanced stats, I am glad basketball is as well. Just because it wasn't an obvious stat when I was born should I minimize it. I prefer to understand why it is critical.
